Thuney is certainly the better player right now but we want to protect Maye long term, bringing in a 33 yo for a year doesn’t accomplish much.
We actually want to protect Maye short term and long term. The kid had two, possibly three concussions last year.

Seeing him get sacked 50 times and in the medical tent half a dozen times next year would be a disaster

Tackles are a massive need, they have centers and guards.

Safety? They could use a free safety maybe but they have Dugger, Peppers and Schooler who really proved himself last season. They can always use a CB at free safety, maybe resign Jon Jones or another fast savvy vet and plug them in there.

Re-signing Joe Slye seems to be a no brainer at kicker, bring in some rookie competition to develop.

LB wouldn’t be a big need if they simply re-signed Christian Ellis, he had the 6th most solo tackles, 3rd most total, 4th most QB hits on the team despite only making 5 starts, he deserves a larger opportunity. Beyond that they need Bentley back healthy.

OT, DT, DE/OLB, CB…. the lines.
Completely dias agree. Lb is a huge need. Right now they have 2 LB, Jennings, who might improve but is at best an average player sand Bentley who not only is getting old but is also a terrible fit for Veabel’s defense.

I think they will pay/overpay for guys but are hesitant to trade draft picks to do so. I agree with it especially when there are LG FA's that can provide slightly above average play and they won't cost draft picks.

I also think trading for a "#1" WR is not the route they should take. I know that I am in the minority, but as I have said several times, if Maye has more time before getting pressure on him he will find someone down field.
I don't love the idea of trading either the first or the second round pick (unless we move back from 4 overall) for anyone other than some sort of nonsensical Justin Jefferson type of player. Mid-round picks, on the other hand, I am fine with moving if they solidify a spot. I know Thuney is starting to get up there, but he still is one of the best guards in the league, is incredibly durable, and can play adequately at tackle if needed. With offensive line potentially being the biggest need this offseason, we could have shored up both guard spots (Thuney and Onwenu) before free agency and the draft had we made the trade.

As i speculated earlier, this offseason could end up being another disaster.

The Ravens wont let Stanley leave for KC. Not when they are so close to an AFC Championship.

Stanley is in his 30s with a long history of availability issues. Decent chance that if we sign him, he's not consistently on the field and we're forced to start backup caliber players at LT anyway.

I think signing him has a pretty good chance of being the disaster, to be honest. Not signing him leaves you with question marks still, but remains to be seen how that would eventually be solved.

The truth is, it's silly to attach success or failure to any one single name this year. We're so far off from having an actually good roster. It won't all be done in a year. The important step is to chip away at it. It's not worth getting so caught up in one particular player or one specific position. Between the free agency and the draft we just need to start adding core pieces all over.

Nobody wants to come here except "Ice".

Sigh

There very little free agent OL that look good and the draft looks even worse. I understand Strange and Andrews could help some of our problems and I get that Thuney wasn't fixing our problem at tackle. But I will surprised if we find a better lineman to come here.

Let's assume we take a LT at 38 who would you rather next to him Thuney or Strange. Nevermind that Strange could wind up at center depending on Andrews.

We don't have good enough talent on this roster to pass up these kind of potential improvements however short term it might be. This goes for almost every position.

Not too mention we probably have more cap space than we can use. I guess we'll find this years version of Okorofor and carry another 50 mil into next year.

Yes I know I'm being overreactive and free agency hasn't even started but after last off-season thinking we had enough cash to go on a spending spree and not doing it I can't help but feel some PTSD from the start to this off-season so far.

I think we all need a splash to give us some reason to believe.

People saying “the Chiefs are freeing up money to go after Stanley…!” But in reality they need to free up money just to attempt to keep their own free agents
This move seems more likely to pay their other G Trey Smith who is younger and presently on a franchise tag of 23 mil

This has probably already been addressed in this thread but in case it hasn’t:

Thuney is a free agent in 2026, he’s on the last year of his current deal with a $16 million cap hit this year. Unless the Pats would plan on extending him, which isn’t a wise move for a guard going into his age-33 season, there’d be no point in wasting assets on a one-year rental in a rebuilding year. You save the one-year deals on “opportunity” contracts for lower level free agents for roster depth.

It’s easy to feel outraged seeing name-brand players get moved to other teams at relatively cheap cost, but it’s important to remember the context behind the moves. Let’s see what this team does in free agency before we get the pitchforks out.

thuney gone? wonder if that has to do with the realities of kicking the can down the road, creating the monster cap hit mahomie currently has... the ChiRefs are looking at a 66 million cap hit for him in 2025... until they kick the can down the road again at the start of the coming 2025 season...

Wake up Wolfie.

6' - 4" - 235 lbs and 27 yo.

DK has missed 4 games in 6 seasons. The Pats got nobody like him and he should have a couple 3 years left.

G is not necessarily the top need, but it is a need IMO.
We have Onwenu and Strange. Could use better depth.
I can’t think of a position other the QB where we have less need than OG.

Sure it is. They eat 10 mill and save 16. After losing the SB largely because their OL broke down, getting rid of their best OL is surely a cap thing.

Thats fair, but 2 years ago watching Sow was painful at G and last year Robinson was iffy at best both young guys that could improve. Sure Strange might be able to hold up at Guard but he might also be our center by mid season. I would like to see them bring in Teven Jenkins or someone similar to compete for LG.

If DAndrews doesn't bounce back from injury then Strange is a C, and that might even be preferrable. He's a FA at the end of the year anyway. Onwenu's deal is set up that it seems very likely he gets cut next year and in the meantime, wouldn't surprise me if they think the most value they can get out of him for 1 year is as a stop gap RT.

We don't need a guard to get by for 2025, but I'd be very interested in adding long term guys to the mix if they really like some players. I don't really care to reserve roles for Sow, Robinson or JAndrews. Based on contract status, I view it as a need as soon as next year and we aren't good enough to be building with only one year in mind.

For example, I wouldn't be opposed if they signed Teven Jenkins for LG (going into age 27 season), Bekton for RG (going into age 26 season). Say goodbye to DAndrews and play Strange at C. Even if it's not Onwenu's best spot, play him as a stop gap RT because the options there are few and Becton is a better long term piece. Still follow through with the plan of a FA at LT (Stanley, Robinson or Moore). Your OL next year is:

LT Stanley, Robinson or Moore
LG Jenkins
C Strange
RG Becton
RT Onwenu

Behind them you have Lowe, Caedan Wallace, Sow, JAndrews, Layden Robinson all trying to carve out roles. Ideally Strange is a keeper at C and Wallace grows enough behind the scenes to take over RT next year when Onwenu gets cut.

Thuney was a great player and I wish he'd have been here his entire career. But, he's toast.
