Why do we care?
According to several reports, his teammates and many agents knew he was gay well before this. He's making an excellent move to get out in front of it now before the Combine begins and the questions start flying at him from teams interested in drafting him, and before it becomes some reporter's big breaking news.
This guy is a fascinating draft prospect - 6-2, 255 lbs and lightning fast. How big is Brandon Spikes? You guessed it, 6-2, 255!
You don't get picked as SEC defensive player of the year if you can't fly to the ball. If he's got cover skills, he'd be a great pick-up for the 3-4 to replace Spikes on passing downs, especially if he falls to the 5th or 6th round where the value will be excellent. He's got down lineman skills to shift up to the line at DE on obvious passing downs.
The Patriots is one of those teams where the coach won't care what you are if you can get the job done, and where the coach is not on the hot seat. I can hear Belichick now when the media pesters him if Michael Sam being gay is a distraction:
"Sam is a rookie and has a lot to learn to help us out on defense and special teams."
"We already covered that."
"We already covered that."
"We already covered that."
"We already covered that."
