DRAFT Cole Strange-Welcome to the Pats

It was all Brady, Bill is a scrub without him when it’s all said and done. Moves likes this were tolerable when he had the GOAT leading the team, no justification making this pick this early.

I'm sorry but this is just an overreaction. Bill has had 3 winning seasons with Brady (2 in NE and 1 in cleveland). Last year, everyone was thrilled with the draft - Jones, Barmore, Perkins, Stevenson. Now we're back to Bill sucks again? As I said before the draft in another thread, we have Brian Ferentz as our starting LG heading into yesterday. We can't protect Mac's blind side with a scrub and one of our top priorities has to be keeping him upright. I don't want to see Mac to experience what Andrew Luck or Daniel Jones had early in their careers.

if he's a starter from day one, isn't that more or less all you can ask for from the end of the 1st round? there's lots of players taken end of round 1 that don't start year one.....and plenty that don't start, ever

It just means he's better than Ferentz.

This draft isn't over and so far the first pick in it has been...not good. Last year the first pick was Mac Jones.

No, in 2019 we took Harry in the 1st, but ended up getting Harris and Bailey later on - two solid contributors. Let's see how today goes.

I get the comparisons to Mankins and Thuney but they had Dante Scarnecchia as their position coach; Strange will not. Its quite possible they had intentions of drafting Walker at 29 but got side blinded by Green Bay and Strange was there 2nd round pick so picked him at 29. I don't hate the pick cause Strange has the athletic talent based on his measurable outlined in BaconGrundleCandy's OP and the mind set to end up being a solid player for the Pats.

I thought Johnson up until a couple days ago would have been a good pick but after watching a couple of interviews can see why he slid. Give me LB Anderson or Chanel in the 2nd or 3rd round and find a way to draft the TE Woods and I think this draft will be a success. This draft is strongest in the 3rd and 4th rounds by all accounts so the trade with Kansas City could be a big win.

Actually, EasyWolf is on to something valid. Those highly ranked defensive players we passed on to get this Strange OG will be compared just as the lackluster production of N’Keal Harry is compared with the wideouts we could have drafted that year.

Bill is obviously not a good drafter. He is too impatient. The odds that Strange would have been available at 54 are overwhelming.
Lackluster is a kind word to use to describe Harry's "production."

Don't love it at all. We spent the better part of two decades plugging in nobodies at guard and it was never an issue. Now with holes all over the roster we take a guy at a spot where we had two good players that we didn't feel like paying anymore.

(some humor)

possibly how things went down...

BB in the war room with scouting team. Kraft down in Florida. BB on phone with Kraft

BB trades back from 21....29 comes up and he doesnt love anything.

BB: "Bob...we have OL as a need but really only have Cole at the top of our board. im sure we can get him later...."
(some background noise)
Kraft : ".....oh baby, im feeling something Strange right now..."
BB: "Bob?...really?"
(some background noise)
Kraft : "..yeah honey....69, yess...now"
BB : "ok its your team i guess..."

BB "guys the boss wants Cole Strange now I guess. get the pick in"

Kraft :" sorry Bill....i was just, ummmm, finishing something up with....so where are we"....

Why do you keep saying it was a "reach"? Because the Draft Magazines told you so? Because the Dane Bruglers, Mel Kipers, Todd McShays's told you so?

You're LITERALLY parroting everything said when the Patriots drafted Logan Mankins. Just remember that we found out later that the 49ers were planning on taking Mankins with the very next pick. And Bill looked like a bloody genius. Not saying it's going to happen again, but this idea that Strange was going last until 54 or 85 has no basis in reality. It's quite literally wishful thinking.
To me, a guard is a reach there. He may be a great player but you can’t convince me otherwise. It was only a need because of a poor value trade of Shaq Mason in the first place.

If Strange is a starter and plays well in 2022 and stays that way for many years for the Pats then I don't care where he was drafted...and that goes for any draft pick. I'm looking forward to seeing him play. I wouldn't be surprised if Dante watched tape and recommended him.

If he’s a starter throughout the season then the pick worked, I can‘t pretend to know how good he is or isn’t. My disappointment is after watching our defense down the stretch I wanted every pick to be a defensive player.

And not resigning Karras most importantly. I can understand trading Mason if you want to put Onwenu a RG. But the Karras thing was a fiasco

Putting Ferentz on the bench is arguably worth a 1st round pick in and of itself.

Yeah, but it could have been accomplished without using a first.

I mean, I like Strange and he will likely be a good player, I just wish we had taken him in the second and used our first on someone else

I went to bed after Philly traded up for Davis. I thought if he made it past Baltimore we were going to end up with him. I went to sleep 99% sure we were trading down at that point but also hoping I would be wrong and that we would take Walker or McDuffie. Not in my worst nightmares while sleeping did I see this coming.

The kid could be the next Logan Mankins and it was still a bad pick beause you could have taken him at 54 or even 85 and drafted Walker or McDuffie.

Al Davis was a genius at one point and then drafted the like of Darius Heyward Bey.........Change with time times.

No one's saying he's a bust. Everyone's saying he's over-drafted for a position that could have been addressed later in the draft. I'm sure Cole will be fine but we had two fine G's that Bill either traded or let walk.
Exactly. No teams has ever said we were a guard away from winning the SB! 5 of our 6 best OL last year were 4th rounder or later and suddenly Bill feel the need to over reach for one.

78 is in the 3rd round
Yes, I didn't know who Thuney was and was surprised by the pick, and I didn't like it because there were a lot of other good players still around. And then I read up that on some boards, Thuney actually dropped. Teams had him as a potential second rounder.

This is not that situation.

Again, what does Strange's selection say about the remaining available players, or those who were taken between 21-29? The Patriots do not believe these players are at Strange's level.
