Chiefs release both starting tackles

A lot of options in FA and draft for OT, Chiefs might be able to get an upgrade even. Wait till all the dust settles before judging.

Mahomes actually has one year left of having a very reasonable cap hit. He currently ranks 15th in the League for 2021 behind the likes of Ryan, Rodgers, Wilson, Brady, Goff, Garoppolo, Roethlisberger, Wentz.

IIRC, they can restructure him next year and bring the number down to a very reasonable $15M for 2022. It won't be until 2023 when the pain really hits, although the cap itself should be quite a bit higher by then.
I made this post 30 hours ago and I already have to follow up with the news that KC had indeed restructured Mahomes.

I thought it would have been wiser to eat his 2021 salary this year then restructure next year but the braintrust in KC apparently disagrees. I can certainly see their reasoning being that next year's cap will be much higher and they are very much against the wall right now.

This actually might simply be an annual thing in KC.

The cap is a myth. Good GMs manipulate it every year. Veach is pretty smart. I still think the Chiefs struggle to get back to the bowl just because it is insanely difficult for the SB loser to get back and the AFC is loaded.

Teams can manipulate cap hits to some degree, but that doesn't make the cap a "myth". Talented players are being cut left and right as their teams struggle to get under the cap. KC has already had to cut 2 very talented players on their way to getting under the cap, and that "myth" right now also has the New Orleans Saints in a stranglehold.

Chiefs still have a lot of flexibility on their cap. After the Mahomes restructure, they should have +$13 million of cap space. They can also clear an incremental $40 million+ with restructures of Clark, Jones, Hill, and Kelce. Still puzzled why they let go of Schwartz for $6 million. Fisher at $12 million of savings makes more sense

If people didn't grasp the meaning of "cap is crap" before this year, they should already have figured it out based upon just the contracts we've seen so far.

Because Schwartz reportedly will retire. He just had back surgery at the end of February. He has a long road of rehab ahead of him.
