CHFF: Belichick's mojo kicked in the nuts

Re: CHFF:Belichick's mojo kicked in the nuts

Pretty lame.

Anyone notice a trend?

Yeah, if you're good, you'll get to play in a big game.

And if you're good, you won't get blown out in a big game.

And if you're good, and don't get blown out, and don't win the Super Bowl, you will LOSE a close big game--likely in the 4th quarter.

All CHFF proved in that article is that the Patriots lost some big games since the SB wins.

Wonderful.

Re: CHFF:Belichick's mojo kicked in the nuts

Anybody else feel that this weekend's game is pretty much the closest thing to the Week 2 2007 game that we can get? I *almost* feel bad for the Jets.

Re: CHFF:Belichick's mojo kicked in the nuts

This is nothing new to me because I've noticed this trend since 2006. Even during their super bowl wins, their defense allowed the games to be closer than it actually should've been. However, there are times in big games where Brady throws random picks inside the redzone that goes from a potential blow out to keeping opposing teams in the game. Brady did that Sunday.

Because collapsing in the fourth quarter is now the hallmark of a Belichick defense.

Unfortunately, this is the truth. From their first super bowl win to their last, the Pats defense can't put teams away. This finally caught up to them in 2006, 2007, 2008 and now 2009. Last Sunday's game was almost exactly like that 2006 AFC title game in Indy. Only this time it was the D-line not LB's that were rail thin in depth.

Can't argue with this. It's the truth and it's a big crisis.

Ride home on Fri and heard Felger (I admit, after I had heard that he favored Branch over Moss I had to listen for myself) he said that the Jests had a good chance to win the game. It may be a 27-17, 30-17 type-game, but a chance? No way....Just don't see it.

Re: CHFF:Belichick's mojo kicked in the nuts

Sure, he might be right, but he still said it like a douchebag. I hope he doesn't get paid for that. It reads like a Facebook entry.

Lots of amazing insights in that article, and truthfully, now that they mention it, I haven't noticed a Super Bowl Victory parade in Boston in quite a few years.

Weren't we supposed to win them all???

*sigh*

Well, time to find a new team to root for. I wonder how the Cleveland Browns are doing these days.

I think we'll win by two TD's at the most. It's a division game against a tough defense, so I don't see the 41-14 predictions panning out.

Re: CHFF:Belichick's mojo kicked in the nuts

Everyone is focusing on the negatives. Anyone remember how well our defense played in the red zone in the 2007 AFC Championship? Anyone remember the strip-sack of Peyton Manning to close out the 2007 Colts game?

4th quarter defense has been a problem for the defense, but that doesn't mean that Belichick has "lost his mojo." Last time I checked the Patriots are still one of the best teams in the league.

Agreed but when you can't close the deal, the negatives are accenuated and amplified. Its not fair, but it's the perception that comes from 2 games where a trip to the Sb was on the line and NFL immortality the other....:-(

It unfortunately IS a trend.

Our excellent RZ defense in the '07 AFCC means nothing because we blew it in the big game.

Cannot disagree with this article. Its always been a bend, don't break defense.

Yes, unfortunately it has been a trend since AFCCG '06 at the least.

The Pats won't get their ultimate redemption (another Lombardi) without him getting it back. We'll see.

What coach in the league would you trade him straight up for? That's what I thought.

Of course not. So BB isn't culpable? He isn't deserving of criticism?

When you don't win championships, you deserve criticism. Hate to say it but if the Pats are o-fer the next 6-7 years, the regions's love affair with BB will be strained.

Not in the shutdown days of Law, Milloy, and Samuel, it wasn't.

Even then, yeah, it was a problem. We just managed to hold (or came back), now we are losing those games.

2004 Playoffs, the Pats gain a 24-3 lead at halftime, but the game turns into a shootout because the defense gave up 24 second half points - they couldn't stop them at all in the 2nd half.
2004 Regular Season, we almost blew a 28-17 4th Quarter lead when Miami scored back to back TDs to make it a 1 point game. We almost blew a 14 point lead against Seattle late in the 3rd quarter. We almost blew a 3 TD lead vs Cin (consecutive scores made it a 7 point game, our offense was able to keep the ball for the last 4 minutes of the game to win it.

2003 Regular season we blew a 31-10 3rd Quarter lead in Indy (very similar to last game). 21 unanswered points by Indy tied the game at 31.
2003 Superbowl, that Pats blew 2 leads in the 4th Quarter (11 points, then 7 points).

2002 Regular season we blew a 14 point 4th quarter lead vs KC that sent the game to OT, we had a tie game vs the Jets that we blew in the 4th (10 unanswered points by the Jets)

2001 Superbowl we almost lost to the Rams, blowing a 14 point 4th Quarter lead. We blew a 10 point 3rd Quarter lead vs the Broncos and lost.

Here is a break down of points surrendered 1st half vs 2nd half and 4th Quarter %:
2001: 108 PA 1st half, 164 PA 2nd half, 73 PA 4th Quarter (27%)
2002: 178 PA 1st half, 168 PA 2nd half, 80 PA 4th Quarter (23%)
2003: 115 PA 1st half, 123 PA 2nd half, 72 PA 4th Quarter (30%)
2004: 149 PA 1st half, 111 PA 2nd half, 66 PA 4th Quarter (25%)
2005: 162 PA 1st half, 176 PA 2nd half, 110 PA 4th Quarter (33%)
2006: 106 PA 1st half, 131 PA 2nd half, 51 PA 4th Quarter (22%)
2007: 137 PA 1st half, 137 PA 2nd half, 79 PA 4th Quarter (29%)
2008: 157 PA 1st half, 152 PA 2nd half, 91 PA 4th Quarter (29%)
2009: 75 PA 1st half, 75 PA 2nd half, 55 PA 4th Quarter (37%)

The only time our defense has been great in the 2nd half was 2004, however, the lack of success our defense has had since 07 is a bit scary. A lot of 2007 can be chalked up to the big leads we got, but last year was horrendous and so far this year has been even worse.

There is still plenty of time to correct our 2nd half defense, but I don't like the trend this year. This team blew plenty of leads (and some big) during the Superbowl years, so we still can pull it together or just get some luck.

If you bet against them every year for the next 6-7 years, your bank account will be strained.

Since Brady, the team is 3-5 in the "win it all" category, and they haven't won since 2004. Taking the field is the smart play, as it usually is when you bet football.
