Charles Barkley Gets It. Why Doesn?t The Media? ? Boston Sports Media Watch

“It bothers me, it bothers me that y’all don’t appreciate them having a chance to win every year.”
ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan, a hall of fame basketball columnist who knows Barkley very well, challenged Barkley, “How do you know we don’t appreciate it?”
Barkley didn’t hesitate.
“Y’all don’t. Y’all don’t. Unfortunately, because of the Internet and [crap] like that, you all win the championship or you don’t.
“In New England, y’all have a chance to win every year. I’m impressed with the Patriots organization because they’ve lost so many people and y’all take winning for granted. Y’all do.

MacMullan left after Barkley’s answer, looking for a better story.

I like Charles. He's wildly entertaining and often correct in his assessments. He seems like he'd be a great guy to sit down and have a beer with.

A couple sources in the locker room intimated that he'd likely HAD several beers before he showed up.

That was obvious when it appeared that he said taco instead of tackle whilst speaking with Willie McGinest and a female reporter over at NFL.com.

totally OT but does anyone know where I can see the Berman interview with BB?

Barkley is a lovable clown with opinions about everything and colorful ways of expressing them. His intelligence also is highly overrated.

Im still waiting for Hulk to chime in.

Yes. I'm sure at this very moment, a tired crowded throng of media is assembled in front of an oak and gold podium, waiting and expectant... nervous even. To a man, each understands the importance of their role what is soon to transpire. Within minutes they will record, witness and deliver to the long suffering masses what is sure to be commemorated as one of the most epic and profound proclamations in the history of humankind...

You Gotta Believe Brutha! :rocker::rocker::rocker:

Friend of Pats Charles Barkley: "Y'alls team gonna suck when Tom Brady leaves"

Just saw this on Morning Joe. Charles Barkley -- from inside the Pats locker room no less -- Pats fans are spoiled and take the wins for granted. By the way, when Tom Brady leaves... "Y'alls team gonna suck."

Charles Barkley says Patriots fans take their team for granted - YouTube

Didn't see this on the threads toward the top, please merge or dump this one if it's here already.

By the way I often feel that same frustration... don't know that I'd be so definitive about that last sympathy, but as a long-time fan I remember those days.

He's got a point. There are some who truly appreciate this consistency, but the masses that don't are embarrassing and make the fanbase look bad.

I realize I am probably about to get flamed but I don't entirely disagree with him.

He may be high or loaded or whatever but I just get the vibe down there that that is true.

I have lived and worked down in Boston for years and I truly love that town. Halifax is like a mini Boston. There are sports fanatics here, and there certainly are sports fanatics there.

I think his point is about appreciation. Setting a high standard is not his point. Appreciating what you have is.

I know some people on here say they have a right to boo if after two or three series the offense stalls or the defense allows a TD.

Our TFB says it all the time as do many others. It is tough to win in this league. This is not lip service, it is a fact.

That is why this forum is such a great place for fans. Fans like us who are committed to this team know how hard it is in this league.

It has been a great run, really just unbelievable when you think of it, the titles, records, championships, appearances and SB's...it is off the chart for any sport.

After Brady and BB are gone I am sure this forum will thin out, but so far what is being accomplished by BB, Kraft and of course by TFB is just simply amazing....

re: Friend of Pats Charles Barkley: "Y'alls team gonna suck when Tom Brady leaves"

Well said, much better than the forthright Sir Charles LOL. Yes, we should be appreciating what are still the Golden Years... and YES I would love to see this season capped with a ring, perhaps the finest Belichick/Brady performance to date (and if you don't understand that you like stats more than football way too much).

Barkley's right that we should appreciate having a shot every year for more than a decade -- who else gets to say that? I mean, evah. Unless you've got moveable loyalties, you most likely won't see that any time in your life. Fans of a handful of teams in the NFL can say they ever saw that.

Yes to all that.

"Y'alls team gonna suck" is sort of a bad way to wrap it up though. Most likely true, especially when BB hangs up the clipboard (much more so than when TFB hangs up the cleats.) But declaring that with certainty is sort of Sir Charles' way to underscore he's a BB friend, not a Pats fan... not that I need Barkley to be a fan.

But as much as that's a great point (re: appreciating the people he's come to know), there's not, in fact, certainty of the bleak future he declares.

If he's right of course, we've seen it before, and I'll go the rest of my life waiting for that "next" ring if that's what the football gods declare, hoping hoping hoping we can back into the playoffs with a 9-7 record if the Bengals beat the JEST and the Ravens lose to the Chargers and that sort of thing... I can even live with the day we're mathematically eliminated by Thanksgiving again. My Pats pennant will still hang over my computer screen and my Pats iPhone cover will still be stuck to my phone. It'll just be easier to get a seat at Murphy's.

Declaring the certainty of such a future, however, strikes me as a bit much.

I love Sir Charles but I'm not sure who he was taking about here.
The overwhelming majority of fans and media around here fully appreciate this Patriots run (and the Boston sports scene championship run in general) and understand how rare it is.
Spoiled - yes????
Unappreciative???? No, not at all.
Most of us know just how rarified the sporting air is in New England.
We know it's going to end and feel incredibly blessed to have been along for this incredible ride.

At least he's entertaining. Makes NBA on TNT worth tuning into even if the game is crap.

I don't think the die hard Pats fan take this team for granted, but I do think the casual Boston sports fan does, if that makes any sense.... But there is a difference....

Bull ****.

KC finished with the worst record in football last year, come back this year 11-5, make the playoffs, blow a lead and every KC fan is still 2 weeks later jumping off a bridge.

Every fan base gets disappointed losing a play off game, but claiming a team that's won 12+ games the past 4 years as not being that good is ******ed. He was trying to close the book on this years Patriots team without the season being over yet.

The globe sports staff is nothing more than sports gossip columnist that are just trying to create a buzz.

PS. With or without a Super Bowl, this years team is great.

Charles Barkley: Boston media takes Patriots for granted And a good deal of the media take a shot at them every chance they get.
