DRAFT Chad Ryland - Round 4 - 112th overall

A kicker is a high leverage position in that he can easily win or lose games for you. The sixth round pick they gave up probably has only a 30% chance of even making the roster, let alone winning or losing games for you.

You don't draft in a vacuum - if you need a kicker you draft one, and if it takes trading up, you do so.

The Raiders took Janiskowski in the the first round. He scored 1,799 points for them, so it proved a great deal. (In fact 2 other kickers have also been drafted in the first round).

Which get's me back to why are we divided? I am pro-Patriots. I was pro-Brady, I am pro-BB. They are not exclusive. I am not pro-Mac, but I will look for good things in his game and acknowledge errors and shortcomings. If he gets beat out by one of the other 2 QBs, three if we count the kid they signed as an UDFA, then I will root for that guy. I just want them to win, I don't need to be right in my opinions, especially to the point that I root against a player or players. Kinda defeats the purpose of being a fan of the team.
This place would be boring if we weren't "divided."

Pretty much everyone is pro-Patriots (except for @SHOWTIME15 who freely admits he's a Chiefs fan and he hates everything about the Patriots).

I'm not pro-BB, if you haven't already noticed. There seems to be a 75% (pro) and 25% (anti) split on this one. Although the anti-BB movement is steadily gaining momentum.

I'm not pro-Mac, but I don't root against him, and I'm not worried about being right, because I'm convinced he's mediocre and I also don't think he's been put in the best position to succeed. Seems like a decent guy, but not winning any tough guy competitions, and he's a fairly limited QB who needs a very strong supporting cast. Is Tua that much more talented than Mac? He looked it last season with the duo of Hill and Waddle. JuJu and Parker are significantly lesser than that combo. We'll see but right now I'd open up camp with Mac and Zappe battling for QB1. But neither are leading the team to 1st place in this division.

Pro-Brady and pro-BB become exclusive if you're answering the question who's more important to the Patriots dynasty. Unless you want to take the soft 50/50 stance.

Did we give up picks to move up and draft a K in the 4th round? I hated the pick because of that. However I agree it was a big need. It won’t be a problem if he produces.

Smarm is bold and italicized, this is type of **** I am talking about. Next you'll be telling me Mac looks like Howdy Freakin' Doody or Alfred E Newman and that makes him a mediocre QB. Let's just stop. You're not going to listen to me, and I am done listening to you on this topic.

I get the point you’re making, but you’re sort of the master of claiming to be in the middle but you’re not. You’re 100% anti Bill, 100% anti Mac and 100% pro Brady. I love Tom as well and hated the decision to not keep him, but that was four years ago. Now we have Mac/Zappe or a player to be named later. It’s over.
As I was explaining above, I don't claim to be in the middle. My positions are mostly obvious. I'm not quite 100% anti-BB because he did some great things during the dynasty run (he bracketed the SBs with his two best efforts) but he's made so many GD mistakes. Call me 75% anti-BB. I'm 100% pro-Brady (how could you not be?).

Poor Mac, I kinda feel bad for him. Sort of fell into our lap, like we had to make that QB pick at #15. He's just not that talented. Pretty good at most things but not special at anything. Then BB ****ed him over with Patricia and jerked him around during the season. Then tried to trade him if you believe that. And as if Tyquan wasn't bad enough, this draft, BB gave Mac a punter and a kicker and a bunch of redundant interior linemen.

Well, come on, you know he does look like those characters.

Plus, IBWT is leaking membership.
You remember what I said about not being a troll? That statement is no longer operative. We are done here.

I wholeheartedly disagree with this sentiment. Boring is hearing people like you gossip about the team and then have huge discussions about what you "think" may have happened. It's boring as hell to see you infect every thread with that type of utter nonsense.

After the Rohrwasser debacle (5th round pick), my faith in BB's assessment of kickers has bottomed out.
The problem was the tattoo. No idea if the kicker might have worked out.
Moody was universally viewed as far and away the best kicker in the draft and possibly a generational talent.
That's simply not true.
The Patriots are likely going to need a great kicker because their offense is low octane and field goals for them may make the difference between a top 10 pick our making the playoffs.
In my view Patriots should have recognized and aggressively pursued Moody.
The lack of awareness that he might go in the bottom of third at the compensatory pick range was a failing for Patriots brass.
Given how important a top tier kicker is for Patriots (as opposed to teams like SF which should be able to score at will)....I think the Pats should have taken Moody in the third. Either with their own pick or trade down a few picks.
Question to ponder. Who will most likely have a bigger impact in next 2 years a top tier accurate kicker who is reliable and can do kickoffs or Marpu.

Could Rhyland be that guy..maybe? but likelihood of Moody being that guy is much higher
What would it have cost them to go back up into the 3rd?

Everyone hates drafting specialists until their kicker misses a gimme in a clutch situation, or the punter shanks one in a tie game, or a LS sails one over the holders head. Not saying Ryland is guaranteed to work out, but if he becomes the next Gostkowski, that's worth more than the average 4th round pick league wide.
That's worth a second rounder considering our drafting whiffs.

We gave up ONE pick: a sixth rounder.
And that after we ADDED one pick, a 4th rounder (which was a mere 3 slots behind the 4th we used with the 6th to get Ryland).

Tough crowd.
Pretty much. You being example 1b (no one is as rotten as the "Joker").

he actually did what no other coach has ever done
Not true if you're talking about winning SBs with Brady. Look I've never denied BB's standing among the all time great HCs... it's too hard to argue against 6 SBs but he's made some monumental mistakes and he has a checkered rep as a GM. IBWTers take offense, I can't help that, but I'm not changing my opinion to gain your acceptance.

I wish there was a "Fcuk you" emoji. You are an asshat.
I didn't make those comparisons, someone else did, but be pissed at me.

I called Mac Lucille Ball once but that was for his performance exiting the Baltimore game. In full blown Hysterics. With an ankle sprain.

You remember what I said about not being a troll? That statement is no longer operative. We are done here.
That's fine. Although you just did a 180. For the record, I generally respect your contributions to the board. Nice demeanor, better than mine, you seem like a genuinely good guy.

lol some good stuff there...

I set a broody hen on April 15th and eggs began hatching this week so I have about ten new children. Went out to attend to my chickens this am and heard a commotion in the separate room where the new mama and her brood was. As I went in a black snake was speeding across the room with a bright yellow chick in its mouth. I began beating it with the feed scoop I had in my hand just as it was going under a piece of tin to escape. It Released the chick and I dealt with it according to its sins.

Who met their demise? The black snake or the yellow chick? There's an analogy here somewhere for Belichick and Mac.

I think the Pats should have taken Moody in the third. Either with their own pick or trade down a few picks.
Yeah, as if that would not have been treated like a fart in an elevator here. Most posters, likely including you, would have blasted them for taking a kicker during day 2. Few, if any, teams expected the Niners to take Moody in the late 3rd. Perhaps Bill would’ve considered it with a 3rd round compensatory pick, if JC hadn’t injured himself. San Francisco also had the luxury of using a 3rd round pick on a kicker because of their abundance of third round picks, thanks to the ridiculous new Rooney Rule rewards.

My guess is that Bill felt that there was a significant drop-off after Moody and Ryland and acted aggressively, in order to ensure that the Pats got one of them, after missing out on Moody.
