DRAFT Chad Ryland - Round 4 - 112th overall

By the way, Gostkowski had an absolute killer missed PAT in the 2015 AFCCG. His best contribution to the 28-3 comeback was another missed PAT... it mathematically put the team in a better spot, needing 2-pt conversions to tie the game (more reliable than his "clutch" postseason kicking).

Yeah, they should have picked that guy who set the consecutive PAT record -- what was his name?

Seriously man, you don't think K was a position of need?? With Bailey injured our kickoff game was historically bad -- worst by DVOA in the last 10 years; I checked. And Folk was only 18th in the league in FG DVOA. The two kickoff return TD's given up vs Buffalo made it impossible to make the playoffs. And you're *****ing about taking K in the 4th round and complaining about wasting a 6th round pick on a day when we had 12 draft picks?

Your hate for BB is making a fool of you.

In front of the entire world BB trades up for a probable UDFA kicker in the 4th round and I'm making a fool of myself on PatsFans.com. lol

Yes.

Looking at this kids "highlights" I am hoping for good things

i don't want to go through 6 pages on a kicker, but didn't i read that he had well above average hang time on his kicks? with the structure of kickoffs these days, this has been something the pats value on kickoffs.......speed to the ball, and hang time where they can drop a returnable kick within a few yards of the goal line and pin the opponent inside the 25.......ryland was attractive in this regard

He was also something like 47/49 on field goals of 49 and under. If he translates to the NFL, he's basically a younger Nick Folk (from his Patriots years) who can also kickoff.

And hit kicks of over 60 yards. There is video of him hitting a 66 yarder with room to spare.

And used one of four 6th round picks for the trade up. The "traded up for a kicker" narrative is a tad overblown, IMO.

thats exactly what those 6th rounders were for, to move up and get the guys they wanted in rounds 3-5

Everyone? Wow.

Smarmy is another way of calling me a troll. My opinions are entirely sincere and I think people generally "argue" when they have differing opinions. And I'm sorry but when someone implies there's no difference between a 4th and 6th round selection then it shows a less than keen awareness. About that specific topic, I'm not talking about anyone's IQ.

you're so ridiculous

they were swimming in draft picks, theres little chance all 11 picks even make the final roster so not only was it smart to move up to get a kicker because ours is aging out, they should have done more trade ups

they had four 6th rounders, they used one to secure a kicker of the future and you're going on about how thats some franchise crushing decision... its absurd

if Ryland pans out as an NFL quality kicker, then it was a great pick

No, sticking with Mac at QB may be a "franchise crushing decision" but nothing about this draft is going to kill the team.

Maybe Ryland will be good, maybe not, but trading up for him in the 4th round was unnecessary at least. Jake Moody seemed to be the consensus top K prospect but there's no indication Ryland was a lock to be the second K taken and there was no indication he would be taken as high as the 4th round. Some publications had him as an UDFA. I suppose he has a big leg but he also missed half of his FG attempts over 50 yards last season.

Good thing if Ryland works out we won't have to Draft the position for the next Ten years. Hated the pick in the Fourth knowing who was still on the board but oh well.

"probable UDFA kicker"

Always nice base your argument on assertions you can't possibly support.

NFL.com gave him a prospect grade of 5.60 ("Candidate for bottom of roster or practice squad"). They didn't assign him a potential draft round, meaning they thought he would be an UDFA.

The NFL Mock Draft Database had him as a projected UDFA. He was the 273rd overall ranked player. The Patriots traded up for him at 112.

Ryland probably have some Lacrosse history in his background thus the egregious Trade-up. Him and that Third Rounder have a lot to live up to.

The NFL Mock Draft Datab
Moody was ranked virtually the same and went in Round 3

Perhaps the people doing the rankings were putting more traditional position players ahead of them in rankings, but the actual scouts and coaching had them ranked higher. Then factoring in need, not every team needs a kicker but a few do, and there are only usually 1-2 specialists per draft that are worth grabbing, so you make your move WHEN YOU HAVE TWELVE PICKS as ammunition

Moody was ranked 87 spots higher than Ryland. How is that anywhere close to "virtually the same"?
