Celtics trade Isaiah Thomas, Brooklyn 2018 pick & players for Kyrie Irving

The overpay was relative to what was given up for superior players in George and Butler earlier this off-season and the fact the Celtics could have, had they so chosen, stood pat and drafted a point guard with a higher ceiling than Irving. It comes down to whether you'd want Fultz + Butler + Hayward + Brooklyn pick next year or Irving + Tatum + Hayward + Lakers pick next year. You also keep Zizic in the first scenario. Hell, given how bad the Bulls got fleeced, you may not even have to give up Thomas.

In any case, the picks cancel out, Hayward cancels out. But I'd simply much rather have Fultz and Butler (and Zizic) over Irving and Tatum. That was all water under the bridge by the time the trade was made, of course, but I still think Ainge misplayed the summer.

good point though I am not a big fan of butler....better point with paul george

I think both brown and tatum could both be better than either george or butler.......and with Irving, Hayward, and Horford, their scoring can develop at a more leveled pace......I see Irving as being better for development for brown and tatum.....whereas Fultz's development could have been a detriment to the continuity of winning

Lol no credit for ITs incredible games 1 & 2? He was far more valuable than Olynyk.

IT deserves plenty of credit, but I have always seen him as someone that will never bring you to win it iall

There was no need to give up the BK pick. Give up the lakers pick. Ainge will look bad next year if the cavs are in the finals and the nets suck so hard and they get a top 4 pick.

meh......they have a boatload of picks

and he will look like a genius if the nets wind up being better than the lakers which is a distinct possibility

How do you know? Danny said in his press conference that even this deal wasn't available a month ago. It takes a lot to get a team to make a trade within the conference. I'm sure CLE would have preferred Kyrie to go outside the conference, so it took a lot to get the deal to close. From what we read, CHI would not trade Butler to us under any circumstances.

As the team's best player, no. He might be able to do what Kyrie did two years ago though.

I don't think IT has the trade value people think he has. His hip might be a pretty big issue.

Will Mr. Flat Earth refuse to do interviews with The Globe?

Was this a good deal? Depends on 3 things clearly:
How well does Brooklyn do next year?
How is IT's hip?
And, most importantly, does Kyrie Irving re-sign with the Celtics?
If Kyrie doesn't re-up in 2 years, Danny blew it big time!
If he does sign long term, I'm very much looking forward to seeing Brown and Tatum in their mid-20's playing with Kyrie in his late 20's.

...only if hes smart.

Last time we had a flat-earth / dinosaur cynic was Carl Everett he nearly killed Shank Shaunessey

I personally don't like the trade on paper, especially based on some other players who were available earlier in the offseason. Read an article that with LBJ off the court, Irving's group is constantly outscored, and he could only win 20-30 games while being "the man" earlier in his career.
.

I have a hard time looking at those stats with any real concern. Kyrie was a young player, how many rookies or 2nd or 3rd year players get drafted to a crap team and single handily turn a crap team into a contender?

Exactly. I'd love to see the list of players from ages 19-21 who were able to single-handedly lead their team to even an 8th seed. Jordan led the Bulls (at ages 22 and 23) to two-straight first round exits via sweep, and made his first finals at age 27.

Irving, at 25, has already made the finals 3 times, won once, and should have been the MVP of that series. But because he couldn't lead the Cavs, with broken down Antawn Jamison as their leading scorer, to a winning record, when he should have been in college (freshman to junior year) - he sucks.

It's funny, no one ever considers that Lebron won, BECAUSE of Dwyane Wade and Kyrie Irving, not because he brought them along for the ride.

I'm not a James-basher by any means, but you could easily make the argument that James would not have won a damn thing without Wade and Irving, and the numbers back that up.

I suspect that the centerpiece of the trade, from CLE's standpoint, was the 2018 Nets pick, not IT.
Bingo.

MIL offered Malcolm Brogdon, Khris Middleton and a first-round pick in exchange for Irving. Not bad but I expect MIL to improve next year thus making the 1st rounder potentially outside of the lottery.

Accounting for BOS being the EC competition, ITs hip, his pending FA and Jae being a JAG and Zizic being a nothing, the MIL offer was on par with the C's until Danny threw in the BKY pick.

Considering LBJs situation, the unprotected BKY pick was the key.

Wait this dude is really a flat earther?

I need to buy his jersey so bad now.

Yeah, the writing is on the wall that Lebron is moving on after next year. CLE needs that Nets pick to come in to have someone new to build the franchise around. If the Nets make the playoffs next year, CLE is screwed.
On the flip side, if Kyrie doesn't re-up with us, we are screwed.

FWIW with LBJ turning 33 in December, does Gilbert really back up the Brinks truck to keep him?

If the season is going south, if I were him I'd consider moving him at the trade deadline. They would net a fortune for him.

Oh, I dunno, does he want to be known as the guy who traded Lebron twice?
