Celtics 2024-2025 Discussion

That was my first reaction too, but the broadcasters never really followed up on it (or I was tuned out)

Is it me or is the C's defense less effective so far this year?

I think their D is the same as last year. The difference is that the refs call everything on the Celtics defenders near the rim. The other team - not so much. Look at the last play of the half last night - Tatum was hacked. No call. Fast forward to the 4th quarter, Goebert gets grazed by Houser under the hoop, a play Goebert makes almost every rebound, and the whistle blows.

I have no problem with the refs calling it tightly or loosely. None at all. I'd actually prefer they call it loosely. But when they call it differently on each end of the floor or ignore stuff as the clock is winding down, that's just BS.

Yes. I can’t remember who posted it but someone said Mazulla is basically selling out to prevent the 3 ball to prevent teams from playing Celtics ball against them. Hence, the help-side defense is non-existent in the paint and midrange. Then combine that with the major defensive flaws of Queta and Kornet, and that I’m seeing a lot opportunities for defenders to step up and just making a business decision to stay put and concede layups.

KP is returning tonight
Celtics trainers spotted unloading a trailer full of bubble wrap

70 plus in the first half with KP back. If he can stay healthy its over for the league imo if it wasn't already.

Wow what a 1st half!
Clippers one of the top defenses went 7 straight games w/o giving up 100pts.
C's torched em for 78 in the 1st half.
Clippers one of the top rebounding teams, C's not so much.
C's dominated them on the glass.
Damn it's great to have KP back.
2nd qtr C's tied NBA record for most 3's made in any quarter evah. 12-18 on 3's.
Fun night.
All that said, Clippers won't go out easy

The depth and development of this team is really something. Just BSing over a few beers with a friend was realizing you could probably split this team in half, sprinkle in filler, and have two teams that should make the playoffs. Quick crapshoot split for the sake of the exercise:

Kornet
Horford
Tatum
White
Pritchard

Bench: Tillman and Springer
Queta
Porzingis
Hauser
Brown
Holiday

Bench: Scheireman and Walsh

Add to that they are all pretty young and have won a title and it's even worse. Swap this roster for the Knicks, Lakers, Bulls, Philly etc...and they would be the talk of the NBA. Talk of the possible best team ever etc etc. Probably would have happened during the Finals run then gotten even more vocal after they won.

The fact this roster has Boston attached to it, automatically demotes it to second tier status. Thats across all sports in Boston btw.

Remember I said the KAT-Randle trade makes both teams worse? 18-18 combined record so far for Kicks and Wolves

Hauser with a boss shot at the end of the game. Still don't know how he actually made that one.

Nice win. Great game from PP, among others.
I am still laughing at that ridiculous monster dunk by Jaylen Brown on Smith

This is going to sound like whining but….

If you’re playing in a “cup tournament” in any sport, you should advance to the knockout round if you’re 3-1 in your group. Otherwise, you just played the knockout round, you just weren’t aware it was single elmination. But that’s the whole point: the group stage wasn’t designed to be single elimination; it was designed for teams to advance even if they had one loss.

Basically every other format like this has the top two teams in the group advance. The wild card comes into play with tiebreakers for teams that went .500 or in soccer 1-1-1 and weren’t top-2. Being a top-2 team in a group of 4 is almost universally enough to get into the knockout stage in every sport around the globe. Being a top-2 team in a group of 5 should absolutely get you there.

If the Celtics make it, great. But even if they do, this is a stupid format, and it was last year also. NBA could just add a few extra games.m

And another reason this format sucks: Cleveland basically wasn’t playing for anything today. If they won, they still likely lose out to the Celtics and pray for point differential advancement. If they lost, they lose out to the Hawks. It’s beyond dumb that coming into today, they were 2-1 (close loss to best team in league) with very little hope to advance. All because of this idiotic format.

For Celtics to advance, both of these must happen:

1. Milwaukee must beat Detroit by 6+ points
OR Detroit must beat Milwaukee by 7+ points

AND

2. Orlando must beat New York
OR New York must beat Orlando by 48 points (not realistic)

So basically we need Orlando to win and the Milwaukee - Detroit winner to win by a decent margin

Odds are we’re out.

Tonight might not have mattered anyway because of Orlando’s margin.

I like it. Question is, who you got if those teams played?

I know the tournament’s not going anywhere so I should try to care, but I just hate it.
