Celtics 2023 - 2024 Discussion

To your previous general point, Mamba Blanca said in the broadcast during the game winning assist to Kornet, "I don't think Jaylen Brown makes that play a year ago." One can hope that someone with the megabrain of Jaylen can evolve... Maybe it's actually happening after who knows how long.
I wonder if some of the negative commentary, about assists and things, that he responded to negatively made an impact on him a little bit. Would be good if so

I am sure it did. It would with anyone. He was horrible in game 7 last year.

Here to give Jaylen Brown props for his recent play, especially his team oriented approach down the stretch of the last two games. Maybe he isn’t as terrible as I often write but the issues I point out aren’t nothings either. But his whole game has adapted nicely recently. Rather than putting his head down and dribbling into the paint, he’s anticipating double teams and looking to kick to the perimeter before he gets suffocated. His shot selection is better and he isn’t forcing contested 3s. In the end it benefits him more than anyone. His field goal pct and efficiency improve and he seems to enjoy the game more than when he goes 10/23. 7 turnovers last game were bad but they weren’t really me-first hero ball turnovers…more just issues with his passing, arm checking, and dribbling he needs to improve.

Hopefully Derrick White’s emergence as the team’s playmaking alpha dog has taken some playmaking/shot creating pressure off of Brown (and hopefully Tatum will follow suit.)
Jalen is doing the little things much better no question.

Damn, that 3rd quarter was fun to watch.

Jalen Brown has been just outstanding in every facet of the game for over 2 weeks now.
He's shooting 55% over the last 10 games. You can make the case he's been the best player on the team over that span. You can also make the same case for Derrick White.
Both have been sensational.

Yup he’s been fantastic, he’s actually playing some of the best basketball of his career. After receiving that giant contract he could’ve rested on his laurels and been content with just maintaining his stats and scoring. Instead he has worked to improve the lacking areas of his game and become more team oriented which is paying dividends.

It’s great to see. And of course White has been incredible too.

Lol poor Derrick on this one

I really like Wemby but I don't think his career will be a long one.

Wemby is a big risk. He could fill out. Any rebuild is a big risk - look at "the process" which led to one guy in the end. The Nuggets won a Banner with a 2nd round pick.

The Celtics process ended up with Smart, Brown, and Tatum, and Brad flipped Smart for Porzi. Not a bad haul for Danny, three good guys. Add White and Holiday, I credit Brad for trading for them, and we have the best record in the NBA. Also a balanced team that is not dependent on one guy in the starting lineup - we continue to win resting one of the starting five against weaker teams. The schedule gets easier next month and hopefully guys can rest down the stretch so we are healthy and rested for the Banner #18 run.

I was laughing out loud when that play happened.
Wemby's hand almost scraping the rafters

It is hilarious because he does not even look like he was trying too hard. He looked back, snickered, and started his jam from the top of the key. Hilarious

He's entertaining

Good post.
If the C's stay mostly healthy they will have a huge advantage in the playoffs vs. everybody.
Like you mentioned, they'll have 5 guys who can score compared to 3 for most top contenders, sometimes only 2.
But those 5 will be more rested than all of other teams Big 3.
That is huge when you get to the later rounds of the playoffs and everyone else is worn out.
It's a double whammy they lay on everyone.
Jaylen Brown is the key( along with everyone healthy). If he is playing how he's been playing the last 2 1/2 weeks, nobody has a chance vs.us. You can pretty much depend on the other 4 starters plus Al to do their jobs.
I think what we're seeing now is what Stevens vision was when he made all the deals, including JB's contract.
Another benefit is having so many quality guys gives you a bigger margin for error, especially if injuries happen. IfJokic or Murray goes down,Denvers toast.
Ditto with Philly/Embiid,etc.

Bingo.

Need was for more threats on the floor.

I just don’t see the “transformative” player he’s projected to be. I get that he’s an obvious first pick because he’s so polished at such a young age, and has a very high floor, but I just don’t see a player with his body type dominating the league. We’ve already seen this many times. Sampson, Yao Ming. Porzingis is one of the better ultra talls, being the first to bring the solid outside game with him.

Most of these guys are better as second options, thriving in pick and rolls and as complementary players. They’re just too tall and lanky to really plant themselves as the primary guy.

I like the 7’0” - 7’1” type tall guy better. A guy like Holmgren is a good example and is already dominating. I think that type of player can be more of Kevin Durant / Dirk Nowitzki whereas Wemby just reminds me more of the Manute Bol type (not that he’s Bol, but I mean his freakishness.)

That is definitely a possibility. I think it depends on how much Wemby fills out. And it is a long road with him, 6+ years before he fully matures? Porzi has filled out but still struggles with Embiid or other big men. I can't see Wemby ever covering a LBJ or Embiid or others. It will be interesting to track Wemby and Holmgren. Porzi has definitely filled out and improved, but his 3 point shooting could still use some work ;-).

He'll fill out a little but thats about it. Dude is a walking broom with eyes.
