Walton lasting the whole season in 86 was a miracle, I don't think anyone expected that to continue. Without him Boston still made the Finals next season, losing to a Lakers team that brought in Mychal Thompson midseason. Boston just didn't have the horses to neutralize the Lakers bigs.I thought the same thing about the 86 Celts.
Parish, Ainge and McHale were not healthy during the Finals. The starting 5 played monster minutes. That 86 team was awesome, but it wasn't built to last. I think this team might see similar issues with Porzingis, but they're built better to win without him than that 86 team was without Walton.
They lost that finals because McHale had torn his ankle to shreds. That 86 team was awesome, but it wasn't built to last. A not dead Len Bias would have certainly helped them, as well.Parish, Ainge and McHale were not healthy during the Finals. The starting 5 played monster minutes.
Getting past Milwaukee and Detroit in the east sucked the life out of them. By the time the Finals came around they were running on fumes.
No players wanting to join his Prima Donna father during FA says it all.2/9 for 4 points and didn’t belong on court…3 front page “highlights”; players must hate this little ****.
Bias might have helped for sure. He at least would have played meaningful minutes and potentially allowed McHale to rest 6-8 weeks.A not dead Len Bias would have certainly helped them, as well.
If I remember correctly McHale was playing on a broken foot. They were made different back then.
His contract and roster spot on that team is a complete joke.2/9 for 4 points and didn’t belong on court…3 front page “highlights”; players must hate this little ****.
Crazy that an athlete could go that long with a fracture and no one knew about it. Everything was so different back then, but no one thought, "Man, Kevin has been running even funnier than usual, maybe we should get an x-ray." Who knows how things might have turned out?Bias might have helped for sure. He at least would have played meaningful minutes and potentially allowed McHale to rest 6-8 weeks.
He broke his right foot in February 87 but didn't realize it was fracture until near the end of the season. He said it was very painful. Kevin blames himself for not bringing it to the attention of Tom Silva sooner.
Commenting on the Magic hook shot to win G4 in 87, he said he wanted to angle him to the baseline but everytime he led/ planted on the foot he felt a sharp pain and felt like it would snap so he forced him to the middle where Parish was.
That was the beginning of the end.

I agree that's how high school sports were, in the 80s too.The x-rays were not that good and a small fracture could easily be missed. Back then the docs would shot the athletes with pain killers and wrap them up. My brother played ball in the 70s, and when he was in high school if he sprained his ankle, the doc would shot his ankle with pain killers in the high school gym, wrap him up, and send him back out to play.

My first thought while reading these posts is "why didn't they just take care of it midseason?" Then I looked at the roster that year. With a hobbled Walton there really was no one who could come close to taking McHale's place. The likes of Fred Roberts, Darren Day, and Greg Kite were the "best" options. They could have possibly gone small with Wedman had they not traded him for a pick (perhaps the first sign the front office showed they didn't think that team could compete for another championship).I remember talk of McHale's bad foot long before the POs even started... This was a well-known, it-won't-get-any-better-if-he-keeps-playing-on-it issue that season; and people were already wondering why he wasn't being rested...

Bird and Parish were great in 1987, but they would have had to play even more minutes than they were already. If Walton were healthy or Bias were alive, I believe they could have gotten away with giving Kevin the time to heal. It's a shame things went the way they did that year.
Having AC Green in the building instead of Sam Vincent would've helped too... Fakers don't win in either '87 or '88 if just that one thing happened.
AC and that Jheri curl though.. the 80's...
Same as the boyfriend/future Dr Benton in Coming to America… Eriq LaSalle IIRC…
It’s really exciting that a Mainer is not only going to make the NBA but is being projected as a superstar and consensus #1 overall pick.
