time to rally around matty......****ty situation, but it is what it is.

just looking at the schedule, this week is BIG for us...need to fire up and take care of the jets stat.

Huge week is right. Got to be more balanced and take adavantage of what Cassell can do

Yeah I'm there right behind Matt. Sucks about Tom but that's the nature of the game, he is done for now. Time to move on and focus on what's at hand now.

The past few mondays after week one have not been good to us. Now it's just 2001 all over again. Get behind him and Git R Done. I believe in this TEAM.

Ok Matt......:welcome:

LOL prepare to see your name in lights!

I am not taking part in a single QB controversy thread over the next several months unless Cassel turns into Brady's twin (which I'm not expecting).

Belichick owes Cassel absolutely nothing, and there's no long-term impact to replacing him and hurting his feelings. None. If belichic decides Cassel should sit, then there will be nothing hlding him back from that decision. He didn't have that luxury with Bledsoe.

That's why I'm fully confident in Belichick's ability to make the right choices.

I'm expecting Cassel through the whole year even when we're a .500 team.

Re: What if Cassel is good all year

I think Cassel wants to start somewhere.

That's the key. This is a season-long audition for him and if he does well, he's as good as gone. He won't want to go back to holding a clipboard when Tom returns.

Good luck to Matt. But I think we're about 2-4 weeks away from the first "Cassel sucks, start O'Connell" threads.

You've been pretty negative this season. You might as well change teams now if you think everything is the end of the world.

53 guys make up a team, not one

They started yesterday, and they will hold as much validity as "Brady sucks" threads did in 01

I'm on board. Go Matt. Shut all the critics up, bro.

Thanks for the words of inspiration Captain Cliche. Been negative? I didn't make a single post during the pre-season. Not one. So I'm not sure WTF you are talking about, and come to think of it, I couldn't give two ****s.

What I do know is I've been around this board long (nearly 6 years) enough to know how people will react if Cassel struggles. The board will be dominated by QB controversy threads about who should really be starting and that will get real old real quick. The bottom line is it doesn't matter who starts.

Re: What if Cassel is good all year

1.) According to Miguel, the Pats will be $26 million under the projected cap next season. If the Pats franchise him, it counts vs. next year's cap not this year's.
2.) The Pats would franchise the guy in hopes of never signing the guy only to trade him hopefully the first day of the new NFL season. Odds are that if he is really good this year, there will be a decent market for a trade.
3.) If he is worth risking to franchise, he isn't going to be the Pats' back up QB anyway. Even if it is tempting to get the average of the top 5 QBs to be a back up, I think Cassel wants to start somewhere.

If he does well in the games before the bye, why not sign him to an extension? It doesn't need to be 8figs (I hope). Cassel gets some assurance he will not need to bag groceries next year and the Pats get to keep a backup that can be traded (like Matt Schaub).

The Mattitude Era begins today...

I have been down on Matt like most, but he has never had this role, he is the starting Quarterback for the New England Patriots... make it happen kid.

If Cassel plays well, we all wish him good luck with his next team.

Then, we look forward to seeing the return of the best quarterback

in the NFL.

You're on the right track.

What's more -- there's no assurance Brady is fully healthy for the start of next season. So if Cassell turns out to be a good starter, a one-year extension might make sense for everybody. He gets partial financial security, the team gets position security, and nobody thinks it's an indictment of Cassell when Brady eventually gets his job back.

The interesting negotiation then becomes taking it from one year to two -- but I think things would just stop at one. The Pats like to stay flexible.

Matt Cassel: Reasons to be Optimistic

The one small thing all the haters, conveniently, keep forgetting is:
The New England Patriots 17 > The Kansas City Chiefs 10
1-0 for the 2008 season, and 20 straight a new NFL record.
FTW

Don't forget, 8 seasons ago we had this exact tragedy happen to our star quarterback, a qb who took us to a SuperBowl, Drew Bledsoe. There were many, including myself who counted the season out, and had little if any confidence in the unknown 2nd year back up qb, Tom Brady.

Things turned out ok, wouldnt you say?

13/18 152yds 1TD 0Int QBRT 116.0 FTW

Sharkteeth:
one falls out, another one slides in its place.

FTW, this is the Patriots, we overcome free agency and injury.

Brady goes down with a blown out knee, and what happens?
We find a way win, and make history with Matt Cassel.

Odell Thurman flies through the air after being pump-faked by Patriots backup quarterback Matt Cassel.

Re: Matt Cassel: Reasons to be Optimistic

As mediocre as he looked in preseason, it was also mostly with a bad OL. Having Light back makes a big difference. We have a good OL, a slew of RB, very good WR - I truely believe Cassel can be a league average QB (still a huge drop from Brady of course) as long as he doesn't make too many stupid mistakes.

I hope and pray that Cassel puts up some real good numbers for two reasons. If Cassel lasts as the starter, and tosses 20+ TD's, to 15 or fewer interceptions, the Pats will likely make the playoffs, and the Patriots could then trade Matt C for a 1st, or 2nd round pick.

FWIW, I'm reminded of a quote from the coach of the UConn women's basketball team. When he talked about the likelihood of their winning, he'd often respond, "We have Diana Taurasi. They don't."

Eventually, though, that quote changed: "We're Connecticut. They're not."

The same thing holds for the Patriots. Last year, we could say "We have Tom Brady. They don't."

Now: "WE'RE NEW ENGLAND. They're not."

I don't know how this season will turn out, but I do know this--they are not going to go down without a fight, and that's all we can ever really expect of a team.
