Cassel is OUR QB and I'm behind him

Lets go Matt, I'm behind you.

Re: Admit it - you were wrong about Cassel

Admit it - there is no way you can make a solid determination on a QB who just played his first full game since high school.

Come the hell on, wait until mid-season to tell people if they were right or wrong...

I for one will embrace our new Cassel overlord.

Re: What if Cassel is good all year

I'm not going to worry about what is the team going to do if Matt has a good year or what ever. Right now I worried about Sunday and hope that all the bad games that he had in preseason and the good game he had on Sunday, help him. I know that Losing Tom for the year sucks but We have to Trust Matt. I mean think about we had to trust a back up named Tom Brady in 01 and looked how that turned out.

Re: What if Cassel is good all year

Was contemplating the same thing myself. What a bummer he'll be an FA this offseason. I think we'll see the team be pretty successful with him as QB, he might not be amazing or anything, but he should play well enough to let the other superstars help us win. And he'll garner some interest in the offseason.

I don't think we would franchise him. If he plays well enough to earn a contract elsewhere, it'll help earn us a compensation pick. I think thats the best case scenario, unfortunately, in terms of draft pick compensation.

My thought was we could get a good draft pick by trading him if he turned out to be halfway decent. I forgot that he'll be an FA after this year though.

Anyway, I learned my lesson after the Drew Bledsoe debacle (for a while I actually resented Tom for taking Drew's job) - it's all about team. If BB says it's Cassell, then that's it. End of discussion.

wheather we like it or not he is the guy.. In Bill we trust..

Re: What if Cassel is good all year

I was thinking about this. What if Cassel comes in and becomes a solid starter? Do the Pats risk franchising him and trying to trade him. I say risk because Cassel could decide it might be nice to have a guaranteed 8 figure salary to sit on the bench for a year.

I know I am putting the cart way before the horse, but it would definitely soften the blow of the loss of Brady for the season if the Pats could get a decent draft pick for Cassel in next year's draft.

Yes...you are putting the cart before the horse.......2-3 weeks ago....Cassel was on the bubble......played HORRIBLY all preseason and many fans wanted him cut......Now, some of you are talking about "How are we going to re-sign him?"

Let's let him play the entire season first....(If that is what BB wants to do).......Depending on what he does do this year.....either he may be gone because he did well and gets a big time contract from another team to come in and be their starter (which I highly doubt)....or He will be sitting down as either Okee or a vet FA take over the reins (this scenario is a definite possibility)

Seriously, hoping for the BEST.......But I am also being REALISTIC!

Cassel was never on the bubble in BB eyes, but keep thinking you know more than him.

You are hoping to be RIGHT and will only claim to be happy when you are wrong. Don't lie please, I'm sick of these stupid shenanigans some of you pull.

Re: Admit it - you were wrong about Cassel

cassell played admirably yesterday but now that he KNOWS he has to be the starter this season , lets see how long and well he handles it.like a relief pitcher now becoming a starter.

for me frankly, his press conferences were a little awkward. he was gleeful somewhat about cherishing this victory yesterday which is being honest but didnt need to be said. thats just me

"

I thought I was the only one that got this creepy feeling as he was grinning ear to ear and saying "They liked me.....They really, really like me!" and talking about how he finally got his chance etc......and nothing really about Tommy.......very weird.....

If I am wrong about Matt Cassel.....I will gladly come back on and admit that I was wrong about him......and I expect that you will come back here at the end of the season as well and admit that you were wrong, if he is a failure......right? I am going to think as positive as I can about whatever BB decides to do.....But I will also be REALISTIC in my views on his coaching decisions as well.......I hope that Matt Cassel will be a great QB for the Patriots this season and the team doesn't miss a beat.....But I AM prepared for the other outcome as well...and what the NEXT move is if Cassel can't get it done.....Okee is still way too raw.....(although I do see great promise in him as well)..IMHO,they should be signing a vet to come in behind Cassel for now....and learn the offense....in case they are needed if Cassel simply can NOT get it done......Just one opinion.....

I am behind Cassel.

No, the Pats do not franchise him. No team would trade for an (assumed) average QB earning a top 5 salary.

you ARE wrong about Matt Cassel PERIOD. You are either wrong about him or are attempting to make the claim that BB is stupid and a terrible evaluator of a player he has watched for 4 years.

Name me one player BB has had for 4 years, that he put in an IMPORTANT role and that player failed as miserably as you THINK Cassel will.

Re: What if Cassel is good all year

1.) According to Miguel, the Pats will be $26 million under the projected cap next season.
If the Pats franchise him, it counts vs. next year's cap not this year's.

I actually say that my 2009 number is as of 9/1/2008. That number is based on the announced cap and not the 2009 Patriots adjusted cap. I need to do a better job of pointing out that number is subject to change between now and the start of the 2009 league year because of
1.) the LTBE/NTLBE calculation
2.) players reaching escalators
3.) tenders to ERFAs and RFAs
4.) the expected signing of PS players to 2009 contracts

FWIW - As it stands right now, it would cost $14.4 million to francise Cassel.

rohan davey!!!

But to be fair lets look at all the starting back ups belichick has used since being here:

John Frieze- seasoned vetran, smart insurance
Michael Bishop- loud mouth Willie Beamin who couldnt retain a playbook to memory, bust
Tom Brady- will go down as one of the greatest QB's of all time, maybe the greatest
Damon Huard- was invaluable on our scout team, very reliable back up, this kid can compete
Rohan Davey- Played better for Germany than he ever did for new england, bust
Jim Miller- for as big as this dude was he could move around and throw the ball, good back up
Doug Flutie- seasoned vetran, took his former team a few seasons earlier to playoffs, local legend, great back up
Matt Cassel- comes from a pro set dynastic college team to a pro football dynasty, now has the keys to Tom Bradys car, so far no dents
Matt Guttierrez- showed promise, moved the chains in preseason, very athletic, training camp beast
Kevin O'Connell- showed promise, moved chains and scored frequently in pre season, unusually athletic QB, can run fast, jump high, and has a cannon for an arm, possibly the future #2 man behind Brady, and quite possibly the future starting QB of The New England Patriots

Why franchise him. How much would he demand to sign for a three year deal if we signed him next week?

You never know, Cassel might have to play for us a FEW games in 2009. We are denying ourselves the reality of Brady's injury. We are hoping it's just a 6-9 month recovery plus rehab but subconsciously we know it could take longer to recover. What if Brady had the terrible triad injury: ACL, MCL, and medial meniscus tears and won't be ready till week 5 of 2009? What do we do then? We think it's just the ACL, but we don't know the full extent and probably won't know for a long long time. Right now, Matt Cassel is the future of the Pats and if he does well the team has to seriously consider keeping him given Brady's precarious health status in 2009.

Re: What if Cassel is good all year

I said 4 years, not 3. And even then this would be the exception that proves the rule.

one to nothing, you win.
it just felt like 4 years

he could run, he could throw bombs yet, he couldnt throw a 5-15 yard pass to save his life, the irony:

Rohan could probably prosper with this offense

Re: What if Cassel is good all year

He was here in his 4th year, at least he was given a spot to compete for a 4th year here, and got cut.... becaused he failed.

Cassel didn't get cut in his 4th year

But really, BB didn't show as much faith in Rohan as he has in Cassel. And plus every rule has an exception
