What if Cassel is good all year

I was thinking about this. What if Cassel comes in and becomes a solid starter? Do the Pats risk franchising him and trying to trade him. I say risk because Cassel could decide it might be nice to have a guaranteed 8 figure salary to sit on the bench for a year.

I know I am putting the cart way before the horse, but it would definitely soften the blow of the loss of Brady for the season if the Pats could get a decent draft pick for Cassel in next year's draft.

Good Lord, let's get through next Sunday first!

Re: What if Cassel is good all year

Why would the pats need to franchise him???

I'm sure they could sign him for much less than 10-12 million.

Was contemplating the same thing myself. What a bummer he'll be an FA this offseason. I think we'll see the team be pretty successful with him as QB, he might not be amazing or anything, but he should play well enough to let the other superstars help us win. And he'll garner some interest in the offseason.

I don't think we would franchise him. If he plays well enough to earn a contract elsewhere, it'll help earn us a compensation pick. I think thats the best case scenario, unfortunately, in terms of draft pick compensation.

Because Cassel won't sign with the Patriots when there may be a half dozen teams lining up to sign him to start with them. The only reason to franchise Cassel would be because he has value in a trade in the open market. If he has that value, no way does he sign with the Patriots so they can trade him. It restricts his options.

Just putting a what if out there. I already said I am getting ahead of myself.

The pats are already up against the Salary cap. There is NO WAY they can afford to pay a back up 8 figures. NOT gonna happen.

Re: What if Cassel is good all year

If (and the key word here is IF) there is any sort of a ray of sunshine in all of this misery, the kid is basically playing for his NFL career, ie, he is a free agent at the end of the year, so a strong showing this season means teams will be waiting in line to sign him.

A sh!t showing and he'll be working at Home Depot next year; hope this fact isn't lost on him. Then again, it might add even more pressure, so not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing at this point...........

If he does well, it's a win-win. The Pats will have been successful in Brady's absence, Cassell will get a big contract and the opportunity to start and the Pats will get a compensatory pick , maybe a 4th or a 5th... He'll thank the Pats for the great experience and everybody will be happy....

Let's hope this dilemma actually comes to pass.

Re: What if Cassel is good all year

It does suck that he's a FA after this season just in case he plays well. If he did well enough, we could Franchise and Trade as suggested, we'd have to have the money under the cap, though, to Franchised him (that's a rule) and I guess assume that he wouldn't sign the one year tender.

This is why fans sohuld not be GM's. I thought he was terrible and should have been cut. I know I'm not alone. Well he's here. He's the best we have, he has several seasons under his belt and knows the system.

He showed us alot yesterday. He could have folded but he was composed, ran the offense. I expect him to grow into the role. This will be a total team effort and we will be competitive.

Even if we bring someone in it will take several weeks to learn the system and that's unknown. Sure Simms, Culpepper, Rattay have been thrown out there. Even Bledsoe.

I'd still bring someone in even if it's Gutz. We need a third QB.

But for now I'm just worrying about the Jets. The games will be close now and we can't take anything for granted. Every victory will be hard fought and come down to critical plays and coaching will be more important than ever as well as our kicker.

I expect this team to grow and build each consecutive week.

So Cassel is my QB and he should be yours. 31 other teams are against us. we need to band together.

Yeah I agree....Cassel is it...he is the future of the Patriots in 08....so lets all pray for a successful recovery with Tom and look forward to what Matt has to offer.

I hope all you doubters sell your tickets. No one thinks the Pats can do anything now.

Its all different now granted. I still remember going to Foxboro without the guarentee of a victory.

time to rally around matty......****ty situation, but it is what it is.

just looking at the schedule, this week is BIG for us...need to fire up and take care of the jets stat.

Re: What if Cassel is good all year

The pats are already up against the Salary cap. There is NO WAY they can afford to pay a back up 8 figures. NOT gonna happen.

1.) According to Miguel, the Pats will be $26 million under the projected cap next season. If the Pats franchise him, it counts vs. next year's cap not this year's.
2.) The Pats would franchise the guy in hopes of never signing the guy only to trade him hopefully the first day of the new NFL season. Odds are that if he is really good this year, there will be a decent market for a trade.
3.) If he is worth risking to franchise, he isn't going to be the Pats' back up QB anyway. Even if it is tempting to get the average of the top 5 QBs to be a back up, I think Cassel wants to start somewhere.

In the words of Gene Hackman in "Hoosiers"...."This is your team"

ya big divisional game.

Good luck to Matt. But I think we're about 2-4 weeks away from the first "Cassel sucks, start O'Connell" threads.

I'm a Patriots fan, first and foremost....no matter what happens this season, I'll STILL be a Patriots fan....went through the same bullcrap when Brady replaced Bledsoe....BB will do the job, as he has PROVEN over and over since becoming head coach here...I'm behind Matt Cassell 100%
