Re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

Wow IF this deal is true then I was wrong and I overrated Peppers value, but I have to think there's more to this deal. My theory is Richard Seymour could be getting shipped along with that 34th pick.

The question is NOT "how much is Peppers worth?"

The question is how much is a one year $16.7M deal for Peppers worth?

The answer is probably: not much.

There may not be any teams willing to part with a high pick for that kind of contract, unless there was a guarantee that he would sign a new deal with better terms. Such a guarantee means that the player and his agent have to be involved.

The rumors that we are hearing mean that his agent is either close to reaching a deal with the new England Patriots, or trying to trick the world into believing this.

Re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

John Clayton just on ESPN talking rather skeptically about the possibilty. Good enough for me to consider it a done deal!
Whatever comes out of his mouth, the opposite generally happens.

Yeah but the Pats don't have the cap space for him so either A) a bunch of current players are taking a pretty decent pay cut or B) someone's getting dealt/released.

Re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

Someone reported a few pages back that if a franchise player is traded, the new team must have the full cap space money available for the franchise, even if the contract is restructured, or even if it is a sign and trade.

If that's true, there's no way this can happen, is there? Where are we getting $17 million?

The only other alternative I could see would be for the Panthers to withdraw the franchise, sign Peppers, and then trade him. Could this really be done consistent with the no-tampering rules in the CBA? I can't believe it would happen this way. Bottom line, if Peppers, the Panthers, and the Patriots figure out a way to get this done in a way that involves the Patriots avoiding taking the franchise cap hit, I think the rest of the league would lose its mind.

I think the chance of this actually happening is about zero.

I think you hit. The only way this deal is actually consummated is if the franchise tender is removed, and Peppers is then signed to a contract with which his cap hit is reasonable for 2009. Then traded to the Pats....this would have the rest of the NFL up-in-arms to say the least....

Re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

Gil Brandt discussing this now on Sirius NFL radio. It really sounds like he knows little of which he speaks. He is forgetting players names left and right and sounded very confused on the whole topic of franchise players.

In short, nothing new to report.

I rather believe that there is still is Santa Claus than believe Clayton who is a useless tool...

Re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

This thread has gathered over 200+ posts!!! anybody know if this could be a record for a single thread?? just curious !! its awesome, im glad we all psyched about this trade!! GO PATS!!

Don't waste your time on this trade. There is no way Julius Peppers makes this team (He's made of glass).

Than the whole trade would be a relatively, lateral move. Say Mike Wright moves into Seymour's spot and Peppers moves into the OLB position seems about the same as having Seymour on the line and putting Woods (or Redd) at OLB.

Re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

Tha patriots can give Carolina our 34th pick to remove the franchise tag. Peppers is now discussing (per league rules) contracts with various teams. He certainly is free to discuss and come to tnetative agreements (or even firm agreements) to what he would play for if there was no franchise tag.

then perhaps they have a long term deal worked out for Peppers, but it can't be anything remotely near what Haynesworth signed for.

Exactly my point! If I wasn't clear, it's because I'm rather :singing: at the moment!

Uh oh, someone cue up the "PEPPERS IS MADE OF GLASS" thread, and make it snappy.

Re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

Let's merge all Peppers comments into one thread. I mean we all have time to read 400 posts and dig through one thread

Re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

Someone said that Mike Lynch is making it seem like the signing is imminent. Look at the Patsfans.com homepage.

Peppers Heading to NE

What?

What?

I know -- there isn't even a question mark. It looks as though it's reporting it as news.

Re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

i dont understand how the money would work out, if they get the deal done without giving up the major pieces we have already, im down. but if someone has to go, then maybe we should look elsewhere.

They are saying that a deal will be done by NFL Network Total Access. So as hyped as i am to hoping to see Peppers in a Patriots Uniform i will try to wait for next week to see if it does happen!!

They're saying that now?

Re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

Others have already said it but it seems more like a rumor/speculation than something that's immanent. I just wonder how it can actually be done and the quotes from the panthers GM doesn't make it seem likely at the moment Of course, he could be lying and he has spoken with peppers agent who brought the pats deal to him and said "yes".

I hope it works out but I wont count on it until it happens and it seems premature to be making plans and fun of other teams (well, it's still fun with the Jets)
