I agree with this. Hightower is a lot less athletic than the Kuechly/David/Wagner tier of LBs. You pay that kind of money to a player who can singularly patrol his section of the field regardless of scheme. Hightower is not that type of player, and he is probably more valuable here than on most other teams.

If Collins money doesn't get the deal done, then somebody else is overpaying.

And none of them can take on an OL and dominate him the way Hightower can. Just because his athleticism leans more toward strength adn power than speed, doesn't mean he's less athletic.

I could see Hightower playing with his hand in the dirt, a la, Von Miller, and being a monster at it, so in that regard, I think he can do more than the three you named.

He is absolutely worth that kind of money, adjusted for the cap going up, and he's going to get it, and I hope it's with the Patriots.

Ryan is an RFA. The post I quoted suggested we match a Ryan offer and butler gets signed to a cheaper one and we match it and therefore did something to butler. It's ridiculous.

And yet Howe knows infinitely more about all of this than you do so maybe you just sit down and listen to what he has to say instead of dismissing it.. I get that you have strong opinions but it doesn't hurt to listen to other people that are close to the team once in a while..

It has nothing to do with being close to the team.
The scenario laid out makes no sense.

What team is going to make a big offer to power running back over the age of 30? Big fumble in the Superbowl couldn't have helped his stock.

Another 1 year/ $1M deal seems like the right money. Granted, he had a career year in 2016 but is anyone seriously expecting him to repeat anything like that with another team?

If I had to guess, the Lions. Their running back situation is pretty similar to the Patriots' with the proven receiving back (Riddick) and undersized rusher with injury concerns (Abdullah), but I wouldn't blame them for looking for an upgrade on Zenner in the big back role.

Can't fault him for leaving if someone pays substantially more.

That being said, the Lions and Bob Quinn seem to be players for almost every FA we have. Hightower, Ryan, Harmon and maybe Blount.

Sucks to lose LG..big fan favorite

I don't see the speculative tweet necessarily specifying the phrase "big offer," just suggesting that there may be a better offer that won't be matched.

If the Pats are thinking something similar to the 1m dollar deal that you propose, it's certainly possible that another team could offer 1.5m dollars, or a two year deal instead of a one year deal. I wouldn't mind Blount here for one more season, but I can see why they'd let him walk away, too.

with blount gone, maybe brady can get some extra td passes in the redzone!

That's at the high end of workable.

Regarding LG, I'm kind of hoping it's true. We really need a youth, speed, quickness upgrade at RB and this draft is the year to do it. But when LG is willing to play for $1-2M a year it's tough to turn that down. If he gets more it allows us to do what we really need to.

8.5m - 9m is where my "workable" unfortunately ends. Doubt BB will go higher than that.

My point is NOT that BB failed to keep starters, but that he chose special teams only players over POTENTIAL starters. I think LeBlanc is a starter, by the way, or, at least, the fifth DB (although he had his ups-and-downs, as rookie starters do).

Regarding LeBlanc, while he was a loss, with such a strong CB class in this draft, along with the Pats' recent ability at mining diamonds from the UDFAs, I think there is a good chance we get another one this year.

Can't see team paying Ryan that if Butler is to be kept next year. Adios Logan. It's been a blast.

Very few teams use the cap as effectively as the Patriots who understand each players value to the team both in terms of dollars and as a member of a team. While I'd love to see Hightower, Blount, Ryan and others back, there's a good chance another team is willing to pay top dollar, and the Patriots historically haven't done that. Unfortunately we're going to lose some good players, but we can be sure that BB & Caserio are working hard on a plan to fill those slots.

Butler is almost certainly getting paid this year.

Man I hope!!! My #1 priority is to lock up Butler long term... love the kid. If they do, I'll get a Butler jersey.
