If you sign Ryan, you are only out cash. If you sign Butler, you're out both cash and a first-round pick (assuming NE puts the first round tender on him). Losing the 1st rounder makes Butler more "expensive" so you'll likely offer less cash to him to offset that than you would if he was a true unrestricted free agent.

Put another way, the net value you receive for Ryan is Value(Ryan). The net value you receive for Butler is Value(Butler) - Value(your 1st round pick) which is less than just Value(Butler). So you're going to pay less for Value(Butler) - Value(pick) than you would pay for Value(Butler).
I'm not sure I understand the 2nd paragraph, too many "values" and parentheses.

But you are right on the money in your first paragraph. People keep forgetting that (assuming a first round tag), it his highly unlikely that any team is going to pay Butler $11-14MM AND their first round pick. So the Pats "only" have to pay him the $4MM tag for this year, even though he has consistently graded out as a top 5 CB in the league.

That being said, we all know that is NOT what he deserves. Personally I'd like to see the Pats reward him with a 2 year deal that would pay him around $7-8MM/yr with $8-10MM guaranteed. That would reward him for out playing his contract, showing good faith in paying him more than they have to, still keep the salary structure intact, AND give him a shot at UFA before he's 30.

DA could have gotten more money several times He is now part of NFL history, with his name coming up over and over again during two famous Super Bowl runs.

Exactly. And FYI if he got a third ring here he would join a very exclusive list of WR with 3 rings. I think only 7 WR in NFL history have 3 rings.

Imagine that. Think back to 2013 and the 2014 season when DA was absolutely getting killed here. There were weekly brawls on this forum about him and I was a full time participant in them lol

Now we are talking about DA getting a 3rd RING here? Wow!

If Pats win Super Bowl in 2017 then Edelman and Slater would also have 3 rings

A pick is only as valuable as the person you choose with it.

If you pick at the end of the first round it might be value to sign a #1 CB that you can just plug and play and don't need to develop. That is if you were looking to spend the kind of money for a FA CB in the first place.

Why would butler give up free agency for a pittance?

He is two years away from FA (tender + franchise tag). A lot can happen in that time also as @Miguel points out again and again.. Money now is better than money later..

This sets up nicely for Ryan. If he is lucky Bob Quinn and the Lions also join the sweepstakes and he ends up with a 11m+ contract.

Great time to be one of the top CB FA targets..

James Develin has resigned. 2-year deal, per Jeff Howe.

Anyone who is capable of this...

.......is cool in my book. Definition of tough, hard-nosed and determined. Not as sexy a name as Hightower, but just as worthy of this extension.

He isn't signing for such an amount - that is way under his value. And if Jimmy G stays then we may need the franchise tag for him next year and not Butler.

Corners like Butler get $12.5m minimum (see Janoris Jenkins) and with the cap going up he re`lay should be asking for $14m a year. Plus he has grossly outplayed his contract. It would sting me if I'd played my heart out for 19 games and got paid under a million bucks and then seen Michael Floyd get paid $2-3m by the Pats to be inactive for 5 games.

Not sure about the "top 5 CB" comment, as PFT doesn't even have him on their top 100 free agents list, despite including 5 other RFAs and an "almost made it" section. I don't know if they made a mistake or not, but his absense is glaring.

I will certainly agree that he isn't going to get a long term deal AND a first round pick, although the team should be trying to lock him up due to the rising cost of the CB market.

Butler will either get extended or play the next two years for around 9m average per year via RFA tender and franchise tag. It means **** if it's fair or not. Butler was signed as a UDFA and that's how his contract plays out. Floyd was a first round pick and was compensated accordingly. Where fairness will come into play will be their respective contracts as real FA.

Forget JG, he is either gone this preseason or next year. BB won't pay a QB franchise tag money to sit on the bench. And there is no way he will sign an extension here unless Brady suffers a career ending injury or simply retires after this season.

I have heard the projected 12,5m APY for Ryan now multiple times in the last few weeks from various "experts". Like I said if in addition to the Titans there is another true player he will most probably reach that.

Arguably it is fair. Patriots took a chance on Butler and coached him up to be a #1 corner. If Patriots don't sign him where is he today?

Sure but in the end the front office only has as much flexibility as the CBA gives them which is why players on rookie contracts are usually exceptions to the infamous Foxboro roster payment structure which generally goes according to depth.

This is also why there is no issue with Floyd making that amount of money over 5 games because this is simply the contract he got as a rookie. The alternative was not to sign him and miss a chance to evaluate someone they were interested in anyway.
