Butler visiting Saints

just wishful thinking on my part. Peter King speculates it will be a 2nd and 3rd for Butler straight up. So the overall trade would look like:

NE: Cooks, Saints 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks

NO: Butler, NE's 1st and 3rd round picks

If it weren't for this snowstorm, Butler would have been in NO by now and things would move along a lot faster.
Yea thats how I see it shaking out as well.

Butler's worth is more than Cooks, both wanting big contracts negates that little problem.
Top corners are like gold dust in comparison to WRs

The compensation we gave for Cooks means we should get more in return.

Will not be happy if it's not.

Which is better value?

1 year of MB at 3.9 million per year or

Pick #32 on a rookie contract.

If going all in for 1 more SB..its clearly MB (unless he is so pissed off he does not play well). MB would have HUGE incentive to play great this year for Pats even if he is upset with RFA so he could cash in next year. Personally I would take this option

Over the long term its clearly pick 32, if BB is reasonably certain he can get a starter at that pick.

I actually like this draft when it comes to corner and pass rush but number 32 for butler's a win for the saints. Keep in mind the picks they still have.

So why would Bill accept pick #32 when he's entitled to pick #11? Don't know what the trade chart says but maybe 32 + 42 + 2018 2nd may equal pick 11

Because he's not "entitled" to anything. What NO would have to forfeit has nothing at all to do with what they'd be willing to trade.

Simply sending back #32 doesn't get it done.

If so then they don't make the trade. Butler being an RFA - and any theoretical compensation involved - has nothing to do with a potential deal. Either the teams agree to terms or they don't.

The only complicating factor is if some other team comes along that is willing to make Butler an RFA offer.

So, people doubted that a team would pay Butler and give up a first round pick.
In all fairness we have yet to see the compensation, but yeah it looks like 32...Hopefully.

I think it's 1 year of Butler at $3.9m

The #32 pick doesn't thrill me a whole lot, although what you say is true. If it's a pick in the top 20, I might feel differently.

OK Cousins. The Browns want in?. How about Jimmy G and Butler for the Browns first pick this year, Browns #33 in the second round and their first pick and second next year. Would you do it?

The Browns know it will take two #1's for Jimmy which they are reluctant to do. But it will also take a first rounder for Butler. Good deal for both Teams.

Perhaps this as an alternative; Browns #1 in 2017 and 2018 and Joe Haden for Jimmy G and Malcom? Haden just finished groin surgery and has been playing hurt past two years. Still an All Pro resume.

2017

27 $11,100,000 $3,200,000 - $100,000 - $14,400,000 $10,400,000
2018 28 $11,100,000 $3,200,000 - $100,000 - $14,400,000 $3,200,000
2019 29 $10,400,000

That's a different way of looking at it.. been interesting to see what others think! Got me thinking anyway! Think people would still want another pick though

This cake is already cooked. The chefs are waiting for the cake to cool before applying the icing.

Look's like bill has alot of confidence in our corners after gilmore. It's time cyrus jones steps up.

I disagree because I think the plan all along was to have Butler in that trade instead of our #32 and then his not signing the tender messed up the plan.

Well I think butler and a 3 for Brooks is damn outrageous

It's not even a position of need either so it's really outrageous

Butler likely 2nd and 3rd
#42 + #76
480+210 = 690

Cooks trade
590pts+24pts = 614pts

Is that enough of a difference though!

For Brooks and a 4. As noted above, the 4 received from NO did not go away -- it got turned into the #132.

I think Reiss thinks so too.

So it would basically be....

Malcolm + 3th for Cooks + 4th (which makes no sense if BB loses it. Hes better off getting a 3rd or a 5th or whatever.)

How can you say that's not a win for tbe saints? I know bill loves value but damn. Saints can go defense with both those first rounders if they wanted.

You really think so? Butler's a corner hovering out of the top 10 but he's a solid corner and they give up only number 32. That's a good trade for the saints.
Players come with contracts. I think Bill loves Butler at $4million but not at $14 million. Look at it this way. If we trade Butler for just the 32nd, the combined Cooks/Butler trade comes to Butler for $14million going forward for Cooks on his rookie contract for two years (I think? Sportrac says $1.5 million for 1 more year). The lower draft pick swap that remains is a half round difference.

The difference between what they're paying Cooks and what the Saints would pay Butler is likely enough to pay for Hightower coming back by itself.

We like the Saints as an organization on this board, but there's a reason they're continually in salary cap hell and can't field a good offense and defense. They're very, very bad at financial discipline and foresight.

Contrary to popular opinion, WR was a huge area of need...Edelman is FA next year and good chance DA is gone too. Either way an upgrade was needed.
Better to be a year ahead (with a top flight wr on the cheap) then trying to plug and play...Especially in this offense.
