Butler visiting Saints

I agree, Saints will not give up pick #11..So, is this visit by Butler to see if he and the Saints can come to an agreement with a contract, then the Pats-Saints work out a trade?

There isn't a snowballs chance in hell the Aints give up #11 for Malcolm.

If he does eventually go to NO BB and Payton will work out other terms.

just wishful thinking on my part. Peter King speculates it will be a 2nd and 3rd for Butler straight up. So the overall trade would look like:

NE: Cooks, Saints 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks

NO: Butler, NE's 1st and 3rd round picks

If it weren't for this snowstorm, Butler would have been in NO by now and things would move along a lot faster.

Given the Cooks deal and that Butler was untradeable at the time it's likely that if N.O. and Butler agree to a contract then a trade has already been agreed to once Butler signs the tender and becomes tradable.

The weird part is the inclusion to us in the Cooks deal of the #4 which we lose. Between the two teams, we lost value there (by having a higher pick taken away) and if Reiss is right it's now untradable. They didn't have to include a #4, there has to be something going on with that but I have no idea what.
All can I think of is that Pats wanted a 3rd rounder and Saints thought it was too high but offered fifth rounder and they compromised on the 4th rounder, knowing that it essentially was a 4th rounder just lower than the one given (#118) since it got the Patriots back what was the highest 4th rounder previously forfeited( 10 picks lower)...due to Goodell's theft...

So if he signs an offer sheet and the Pats don't match, what is New Orleans required to give the Patriots.......???
The only way it would be anything else, is if the Pats match the offer sheet and then trade him to New Orleans for something other than #11...And you can bet the league and the NFLPA would be screaming collusion and putting Ted Wells on speed dial....
And if the Pats matched and traded him would there be cap implications for any signing bonuses or would it all fall on the Saints???

I don't know how this is going to work out, but if the Saints give up their 11th pick AND have to give Malcolm a new contract, then the Saints FO will get run out of town. The Saints could have gone after any of the FA CBs available and not have to give up their pick. The draft is also stacked with CBs and they are well positioned to get one with the 11th pick, without having to give a massive contract since it's going to be a rookie.

What a terrible deal if the saints still have both first rounders and butler. You gotta gotta kidding me. Butler's a top 15 corner.

So what is he doing seeing the Saints then? If they make him an offer that he likes then he will take it, thus giving us #11. Or what? The Saints are going to say that the offer is contingent on him signing his offer and getting traded? In this case the Pats must have had a pre-trade discussion, but why has it taken so long for the Saints to contact him?

while we're on conspiracy theories how about BB asked Payton to bring him in and low-ball him, setting the market (and no I don't think that happened).

Butler's a top 15 corner. You downplaying butler as a player. If tbe saints give up 32 they better give up another pick.

Is it even legal to make an offer to a restricted FA after the tender deadline? Me thinks not.

Why is this such a ****ing soap opera W Butler? He's an rfa and has just about ZERO leverage......
He's been an awesome player, but you'd think the owners would collude to prevent this from happening - restricted FAs basically shooting themselves out of town... If this happens you're opening the floodgates.
Teams at the bottom part of the draft will basically say, hmm, we can sign impact player RFA X to an offer sheet and only give up, say, #30? It's a no brained... Get a proven vet "in the draft" as opposed to an unproven rookie...

The difference is that Butler is a known quantity and a top NFL CB unlike a rookie CB.
Saints' Achilles heel has been defense and Butler fills a major need but is it worth the cost???

As far as I'm aware, the team HAS to give up their OWN pick which would be #11 - they can't elect to send a different pick acquired from a different team instead.

That's if they sign him. There has nothing stopping them from agreeing to tentative terms that are contingent on a trade. IMO, this is likely the approach NO would take.

I don't think anyone expects Butler to go and neither #1 (very likely #32) coming back to us. You're making stuff up again.

I am hoping other teams have better offers. I am surprise a team like the eagles or titans are not in play.

If he is allowed to go, it is because Bill thinks he isn't good enough to be given megabucks. Maybe it is his height, but I have no problem with him going if Bill thinks it is right.

He always strikes me as a very good corner, but maybe not an elite shutdown one. We all saw him get burnt and give away at least one vital PI in the SB. Maybe that has been spotted and has caused concern.

So say the Saints sign him to an offer sheet, Pats don't match.

We, in essence, traded #32, one year of cheap Butler, and a late 3rd for #11, an early 4th (that the league stole) and two years of cheap Cooks.

I thought BB liked Payton.

Shhh...Shhhh.

I'm not downplaying him, i think he is a legit #1CB. But it just doesn't make sense for the Saints to give him a top contract, plus give up the 11th pick when they could have gone after Gilmore or Bouye without having to give up their the 11th pick.

Wtf you talking about. Go where? I am saying butler's worth a first rounder. If the saints don't give us one then it's a terrible deal.
