Bryant requires second foot surgery--impact Edelman return?

Once Edelman is not at risk of reinjury, play him. If he's at risk of reinjury, don't play him. I get that in the playoffs that equation becomes a little more complicated, but until the playoffs it's not complicated at all. If the divisional round rolls around and he's still not 100%, then it gets interesting.

Re-injury can still occur in playoffs, but at that point it is all about playing for a championship and all the work that went into the 2015 season and wanting to give it a chance and see it through.

I think taking the extra two weeks can't hurt the healing process. You risk being rusty upon return. I prefer "rust risk" to "re-injury risk" or even "sub-optimal seeding risk".

Yea, every game he plays in is a risk, so i'd rather be conservative with an extra 2 weeks rest and he only has 3 games he has to make it thru, as opposed to 4. Just that much less of a chance of reinjuring it from a pure numbers standpoint

Possibly...I often wonder if the Pats would have won SB46 had they just kept Gronkowski on the bench and replaced him with another option. That interception by Blackburn in the 4th was a killer and the result of trying to force the ball to someone who should not have been in that situation. I don't think the Giants really bought the whole "decoy" idea after it was apparent Gronk was not healthy, and I can't speak intelligibly about his blocking.

They took Gronk so seriously that game that they had an average linebacker in man coverage on him 50+ yards down the field. He wasn't much of a decoy, but I still take my hat off to the set of balls and toughness it would take to have your ankle bent into an L and then play in a Superbowl 2 weeks later

Edelman has already been practicing for a couple of weeks ..... I think he will be fine when he steps onto the field

Yea agreed, him and Tom have been on the same page for years so whatever rust he'll have I think can be knocked off after 15-20 minutes of game time

He's naturally going to be a tad slower in his speed and quickness, but his knowledge of the offense and knowing where Tom wants him to be on critical plays in the game is invaluable

Someone could step on his foot again in a game, which is how it happened in the first place. There is always a risk of you come back too early.

Yea and with a lovely young man like Nmdunika Suh on Sunday, I wouldn't add unnecessary risk if he can still benefit from 2 weeks of healing

We need people to step up and the defense to play very well come the playoffs. We need HFA due to these injuries. I am hoping we get the winner of the 4th or 5th seed even if it means facing thr chiefs.

To summarize, perhaps?

He's definitely been recovering long enough for it to be possible for him to play....
....but, this is a very individualized injury and we have no idea if it is long enough for him,
....and, full recovery takes 3 months on average.

He's been practicing and looking upbeat....
....but, it has been limited and we don't know how much stress he's put on it.

If he plays, he'll get a chance to shake off the rust before the playoffs...
....but, he's got great chemistry and time with Brady so there may not be much rust.

It is important to win this game to assure the #1 seed...
....but, perhaps they'd rather play on the road with him, than at home without him (if he re-injures it this week).

Team doctors have allowed players to play after 6 weeks of having this surgery...
....but we don't know how much certainty they have of each player's recovery status when they do so.

Playing this year is very important, because a championship is possible...
....but each successive game becomes more important that he be healthy for it,
....and, he has the rest of his career to protect.

Let him rest more. Chris Harper time!

It's a ridiculous exaggeration. You're saying if the decision is made to give a guy who broke his foot more rest than why not sit Tom Brady in November. That doesn't help to illuminate anything, it's just nonsense words.

You say you don't believe Edelman isn't any more likely to get hurt than any other player. I would say we don't know for sure, but if we had to guess that sounds wrong.
I'm not sure why you can't understand a "where do you draw the line" question but it is silly to devote this much conversation to a throw away comment at the end of a post.

So you don't know either. Again my point remains that I care about how productive he is in the playoffs (as well as securing the homefield) so if he can go this week I think he needs to.

I wonder if Romo will bring him to the Super Bowl? He told Brady a couple of times he would see him there n so it would be nice of him to bring Bryant along to watch Brady play.

I've been ringing the bell for a month that a Bye is very significantly more important than HFA. BB history says the Patriots end up in the SB approx. 66% of the time when they have a Bye. #1 vs #2 seeding has not really altered that %. But HFA is still important. I assume the players know what's at stake: traveling-away from home-hotel-foreign environment-different weather-hostile crowd versus sleeping in their own bed along with every other positive/edge. I assume they all want this win very very badly and I assume BB knows this/wants it very badly too.

If the docs say Jules is at a stage where the risk of re-injury is still tangible then unquestionably he should sit. But with him practicing for the last few weeks I would assume the staff has a solid handle on where he is. So if the treatment response/requirements and the monitoring by the docs say he is very largely good to go then playing a limited number of snaps not only may aid in this win but could aid in the next one too (helps shake off any rust caused drops). Sure, Miami seems like it should be a likely win yet can that be assumed? It's a division game against a team with nothing to lose and potentially a lot of guys trying to solidify a job next year along with weather that says it will be a wet field (maybe significantly so).

I admit I'd rather Jules sits it out just from my own chicken little standpoint. It seems like prayer, a rabbit's foot, a chunk of the blarney stone is needed for every game to combat the dark cloud of injury that has been plaguing us lately. But those who are cleared to play should play. IMHO that's the right mentality for a championship team that has a meaningful game coming up Sunday...

Or Hardy, he can come and bring his sister to watch Brady play.

Would be nice to win both playoff games without minitron but it's almost impossible. He means so much to this offense. I am not confident in guys like martin or even lafell. We need more then gronk or amendola in certain situations.

Pats will treat the Fish game like a generic regular season game with regards to Edelman.. It's not a must win.

If they decide that playing him is not a re-injury risk - and wouldn't slow his healing - they will play him to get the work.

If they decide that resting him will reduce the chance of re-injury and increase his healing sped for the playoff games - they will sit him.

Likely they sit him I think - and its very likely the Patriots win anyway.. I think they could win with mostly backups vs. Miami. We will see if they even get up for this game.. I don't think they will.

I am hoping that he doesn't play. Amendola may be able to go in and get it done for 2 quarters or so, but all accounts have Edelman's recovery time anywhere between 6-12 weeks. By allowing him to heal for 2 more weeks, he'd be right in the middle at the 9 week point for the divisional round game.

I'm wondering if there's not some gray area to the "if he can play, he should play" theory, that even the doctors aren't 100 percent sure of? After all, one can assume that a guy like Dez Bryant received the green light for coming back after 7 weeks (where Edelman is currently), and he has been battling that injury all season long. With the bye secured, I'd be tempted to see if Amendola could go for some limited snaps, while giving #11 the extra caution and time to heal.

Luckily, none of our opinions matter to Bill (I'd have been fired a long time ago), as he will do what's best for the team.

It seems really weird that this billion dollar team doesn't hire a doctor or something and has to rely on patsfans.com threads to assess players and make playtime decisions.

Great point, although one has to wonder if there's not some injury situations that aren't quite as black/white as we'd expect, especially for a player who makes his living stopping on a dime and juking. One can assume that his situation is a bit different from a guy like Dez Bryant, whose game is based on physicality, straight line speed, and catching the ball at the highest point.
