Browns Fire Hue Jackson

Hue may well be a horrible coach. However a lot of folks seem to be under the impression that he had significant authority with the Browns. I don't think that's the case.

From what I understand, it was Sashi Brown who fired DC Ray Horton (a 3-4 guy) in 2017, and "installed" Gregg Williams (a 4-3 guy) as Hue's DC, thereby reducing the value of at least a few of the 3-4 type front-seven players the Browns had drafted in the previous 3 years under HC Pettine and DC O'Neil (both 3-4 guys).

Then, after Dorsey replaced Brown on Pearl Harbor Day 2017 (seriously), he "installed" Todd Haley as Hue's OC.

Also, about a week before the 2018 draft, a reporter asked Hue about which QB they were leaning toward. Hue answered, "I don't know. John hasn't told anyone who we're drafting anywhere yet."

During the week before the Steelers' game, Hue had announced that he'd be taking over "some of the offensive play-calling". That it didn't go well may be less important than Hue "straying from his own lane" in Dorsey's eyes. I'm not sure how Haley also got the axe, or who called that shot (might've been Haslam).

Anyway, Hue's relatively powerless situation isn't all that unusual in the NFL. The Jete and Jills have been run pretty much the same way for decades, as the Lions were before WCF finally croaked. Keim pretty much rins the Cardinals. Strictly top down management. And the HC is always the scapegoat.

Hue called the plays until he was stripped of that role after last seasons fiasco and forced to hire an OC. He was a moron play caller whom Haslam said prior to the start of last season "still had the magic". Haslam loved Hue 1 win and all.

Hue said Kizer was ready to go after camp and then stuck with him the whole season. The back up QBs played here and there, but Hue always returned back to his chosen QB Turnover Machine Kizer.

The move to hire Williams was spot on. The Browns defense improved leaps and bounds last season and were top 5 vs the run. This season they have improved from last year. Williams is an autopilot DC. You dont need to micro manage him so Hue could focus on managing the whole team and games.

Hue had plenty of power, but it slowly stripped away after it was obvious that he was awful in those roles. It was finally clear that Hue is no game manager CEO head coach either. Last year he had a chance to tie the Jets game up for a potential win. 4th down, down by 3 Hue goes for it instead of kicking the sure 3 and tying. Browns lose.

After 8 games and you have 2 wins then its asta lavista. The Browns are already out of the playoffs.

They should consider Jeff Fisher. 100% serious. He consistently gets 7-8 wins. It would be good for the league in general if the Browns weren't a lock for 10+ losses every year and gave a few upsets here and there.

Yes, I would hire a HC with prior NFL experience and not go the route of another Chip Kelly because he has wiz bang college offense.

It's hard to wrap your head around how unsuccessful Hue was as a head coach.

Here’s an eye-opening stats from ESPN, shared by Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times on Twitter, posted by Florio (Putting Hue Jackson’s coaching career in perspective):

To match Jackson’s .205 career winning percentage, Patriots (and once-upon-a-time Browns) coach Bill Belichick would have to lose a lot of games. Specifically, Belichick would have to lose 867 straight games. Putting it another way, that’s more than 54 straight years of 0-16.

OK, so Belichick may not be the fairest example. So we ran the numbers with a coach far closer to Hue than Belichick in career achievements: Former Colts coach Chuck Pagano. Based on a career winning percentage of .549 (56-46) in 102 career games, Pagano would only have lose to 171 straight games to match Jackson. That’s nearly ten-and-a-half consecutive winless seasons.

So, a thoroughly awful coach (Pagano) would have to return & lose every game for over a decade to "catch" Hue.

Amazing
