TFB has been very good this year getting the ball down the field.
Looking at his splits it is very interesting.
I compared this year to '14,'15 and '07.

First is # or % of all throws that are down the field

11-20 yard
16 21%
15 16%
14 22%
07 21%

Throws more than 21 yards
16 11%
15 10%
14 8%
07 12%

Total 11 or more yards
16 33%
15 25%
14 31%
07 33%

So Brady, at 39 is throwing the ball down the field as much or more than ever.

How successful is he?

2016
11-20 26/35 589 74% 16.8 YPA
21+ 10/19 373 53% 19.6YPA
All 11+ 36/54 962 67% 17.8 YPA

2015
11-20 57/99 1157 58% 11.7YPA
21+ 20/60 738 33% 12.3 YPA
All 77/159 1895 48% 11.9 YPA

2014
11-20 74/130 1337 57% 10.3
21+ 12/48 427 25% 8.9
All 86/178 1764 48% 9.9

2007
11-20 69/120 1113 58% 9.3
21+ 28/69 1112 41% 16.1
All 97/189 2225 51% 11.8

Brady is throwing downfield more than he has the last 2 years, and equally as much as his 07 season, but the result as better than ever. The 11-20 numbers are particularly impressive. But the 21+ are also his best.

Brady is actually getting better with age.

Not to take anything away from Brady but I think the change this year behind the higher YPA is Hogan who can get down the field and Gronk who is playing out of his mind and also benefitting from having Bennett on the field at the same time.

I think the biggest change is the 11-20 yard range and that's not hogan

Brady's deep ball has been massively underrated on this forum since moss left. The reason he missed all those deep balls from 2010-2015 was because we had zero deep threats. He was throwing the ball 55-65 yards downfield to 5'10 guys with no vertical or straight line speed. Now that he's got a legit deep threat 6'2 4.4 speed hogan, you seem him connecting on the deep ball again. Brady has always had a beautiful deep ball

Brady = fine wine

Helps having better weapons: bennet, hogan(Mitchell -alt deep threat when hogan hurt)

looks not great without Hogan and Gronk on longer throws today

Mitchell would bring another threat in the vertical passing game to this offense.

Great topic. Brady has been a terrible down field passer for most of his career. I agree he has improved tremendously lately. It has nothing to do with the talent of his receivers. In 2007, which was an outlier for deep passes, most of his deep passes to Moss were of the ugly jump ball variety. If there was a statistic on missed open downfield receivers, I guarantee that Brady would be high on that list. If there is such a statisc please inform me of it. If you disagree go back and look at every game throughout Brady's career and see how many times he's had a receiver get behind the coverage that he's missed. Conversely, look at the marginal QBs who've struggled throughout a game against the Pats but hit receivers on the numbers when they get open deep.

I thought today was one of Tom's best games. He played tough as always, but he really showed off great play making in tough conditions. Kapernick fumbled twice and had some ugly throws leave his hand playing in the same conditions.

When he passes Manning in the next two games in total wins, there will be no doubt he is the best to play the game sorry Jerry.

Great point - and in this case the stats affirm what the eyeballs say!

The best thing is, he's doing all of this spreading the ball out so Ds never know what's coming (as opposed to in '07 - man, can you believe it's almost 10 years?)

This is a rare group of receivers Brady has around him. In past seasons they've had various guys who just couldn't get the Patriots timing oriented offense.

I have to say, I think every receiver on this team has Brady's confidence

And he's throwing ALL kinds of passes too - rainbows that fall only where the intended receiver could grab it, bullets flying right between/above/around defenders to find that small "open" space, you name it, dink and dunk, long bomb - Brady is doing it ALL

It's truly an amazing thing to watch

23 "ugly jump ball variety" touchdowns lol

Brady made some high light like plays out there but I actually thought it was his worst over all game.
