They would have made a run in 88 if they had played Flutie instead of Eason. It was Berry's worst mistake as a coach. Grogan was hurt. (Grogan was always the best choice when healthy, btw).

And he was much better than Matt Cassel. Pennington a better comp maybe? And remember, Flutie was 36 by the time he got back in the league, and he got Eason'd in Buffalo his first year (by Ralph Wilson).

Moss will tell you, the two best QBs he ever played with were Brady and Pennington. He was legit before he hurt his shoulder, that Jets team was actually terrifying.

That is the scale of GOAT not the bar for good or successful. Not winning a single playoff game in your life doesn’t establish the bar at 6 SBs. Winning 38 games over 13 years isn’t saying multiple consecutive 10 win seasons is the bar either.

That year the team averaged 18ppg in Doug's starts. Not sure he would have made a difference. Eason wasn't bad that game vs DEN.

I agree Doug was a better player than Cassell. Just comparing careers. Yea maybe Pennington.

I realized I have no idea what "success" means to you.

I have a feeling Brees is getting in over Staubach. I definitely don’t agree with the pick, but just from the commercials, etc. with the dramatic shots of the great hope Drew Brees Skywalker being shown constantly, I think he’s getting on. Perfect storm of hype in his favor right now, as he holds the counting records at just the right time like a game of hot potato in reverse.

I get the feeling Brees undeservedly on, though I think he’s somewhere between 12-15 (reflected when his record gets broken) while Staubach is 7-10. If Brees has won last gear and not choked it away and then whined like a loser, I’d feel differently. While many of these pre-expansion guys didn’t need to face 32 teams, they did have to be better than a lot, which is why I think winning a conference championship is a big deal too. Brees has only been to one Super Bowl, whereas Staubach went to 4.

    Unitas is a lock.

If Rodgers makes the team then it basically discredits the entire NFL 100 list. I personally think he is somewhere around the 25th best ever, and Wilson has already had a better career.

    @venecol

Where is Jacoby on the all-time list?
Did you think I'd let you off the hook for this after all the crap you gave me earlier this year?:cool::cool:

Let's call it a draw, though. He had a pretty good year; you could select stats either way to make a case for him being good or bad. He was playing with a knee injury, but I still think the Colts can't be thinking this is the guy for their future. They may be thinking he might their guy, but I think they entertain options this offseason. One of them may be a 42 year-old QB looking for a championship roster who probably wouldn't mind playing in a dome/warm weather considering his injuries. Colts still have a lot of money, a great offensive supporting cast, and a very talented GM in Ballard.

I was hoping you'd forget, lol.

Seriously, Vinatieri literally lost them 3 games with his missed FGs; they would be in the playoffs otherwise. Maybe you're right and he's not the guy, but I still think the raise he got was good value for their team.

I don't think there's any connection between the ad copy and the selections. Some of the stuff has favored Joe Namath and Troy Aikman, who are no-hopers. I really doubt Brees or Rodgers sniff the final list.

Belichick's dad coached at Annapolis when Staubach was there, and Belichick was on the selection panel along with Gil Brandt (who drafted him.) I think Staubach gets in.

Again, all the other position selections for this list have skewed old, to the point where like 1/3 of the selections were watched on black & white TVs. I don't expect QB to be different, it's meant ot run the gamut of the entire 100 years (or in this case, for as long as the forward pass mattered, so like ~1940+)

If you managed to stay in a league where the average career length is about 3 years for the duration of multiple contracts you have had a successful career. Winning or losing doesn't have much to do with it. Nobody is putting those players in to the HoF or even a pro bowl.

But the spectrum is pretty big. It is not just unsuccessful players and stars.

Okay, here’s my final prediction, as the show starts in about 90 minutes. Hoping recency bias with Brees and Rodgers doesn’t fck my list up.

    • Baugh
    • Bradshaw
    • Brady
    • Elway
    • Graham
    • Manning
    • Montana
    • Starr
    • Staubach
    • Unitas
3 final cuts (definitely could make it)
    • Layne
    • Luckman
    • Marino

Of course there is a lot of ground between stats and u successful players. That doesn’t mean handing around defines success.

Okay my list is already blown up. Did not see Favre as top 10. This really throws everything into chaos in terms of what to expect from the panel.

    You came pretty close.

Final: Sammy Baugh, Tom Brady, John Elway, Brett Favre, Otto Graham, Peyton Manning, Dan Marino, Joe Montana, Roger Staubach, and John Unitas.

Favre over Rodgers? I dunno about that. Rodgers more consistently wins.

I was not surprised by any of the picks. In fact, 9 of the 10 are in my personal top 10.

I don't like Elway, but I've already said that a million times.
