Bob Ryan: "Seahawks will be double digit favorites over anyone in Super Bowl"

I am consistently awestruck how knowledgeable the Globe's non-football writers are about football. Ryan, Shaughnessy, Man Hands MacMullan -- what amazingly insightful conceited condescending stuffed shirts.

I am waiting for Gammons to predict the point spread next. Time for Ryan to stick to basketball which he was once good at when the Globe had a great sports section many years ago.

I really doubt that, The Seahwaks are favored by 7 in Seattle against the Packers and I dont see that going up by three points if the Patriots play them on neutral field. But then again the Betting line is more about how people are betting than anything else so I could see it happening

I would love for this to be motivation for the pats, if they make. First we got beat Indy. Once that, then we have 2 weeks to prepare for the super bowl.

If the pats make the sb and against Seattle, I would love the pats first offensive play to be a Brady to tyms 80 yard td over Sherman. But that's about as likely to happen as our politicians in the U.S. To reach a compromise

Seattle hasn't played any real competition since week # 6, when the Cowboys pushed them around in their own stadium. Totally untested team. Patriots offense would be such a shock to their system.

Look at their schedule, then consider their road to Arizona in January given Rodgers is hobbled and they have HFA

i agree. seattle is good but they can be beaten. San Diego beat them in week 2 when they were still on an emotional high from winning the super bowl. They could't stop Gates, so Gronk might have a good day against that D. People keep acting as if seattle doesn't lose games - they've lost 4.

Yes, they've lost, but let's not undersell them, either. They've won 7 in a row, and 10 of their last 11.

I don't think they watch football. I think they write about things they heard about in it the year before.

GB is a better match up for us but Seattle will probably eek out a victory. Either way, we'll be the dogs.

I prefer it.

Bob Ryan?

Noted football expert Bob Ryan??????

What? They didn't have Alexi Lalas or Bud Collins to give us Super Bowl insight?

...and clocks all over the city of Boston stopped upon Ryan's appearance in public...

The untold narrative is going to be what TBR so deftly listed, and I have said for a while now. Seattle's big push over the last 6 games of the season where their defense shined came against rookie QB's, back up QB's and Colin Kapernick twice. Now they have added a playoff win against another team with a very marginal offense. An offense that essentially gave the Seahawks 14 of their 31 points.

No question that the Seattle D is a great one. Perhaps the best in the league. But is NOT anywhere near the legendary juggernaut that the mediots are currently portraying it. It is an excellent Defense that is beating up on bad offenses. It's just that simple.

As for Bob Ryan, he is the best basketball writer this city ever spawned, but on any other sport he is merely an observer with better than average writing skills. His opinions carry no more weight than you or I.

Bob Ryan should be put out to pasture....

Seattle is tough. Probably 7 point favorite.

Doesn't mean much. Doesn't mean anything.

highly underrated injury to Jordan Hill last week. He had 5.5 sacks from the Nose in the last 6 games, right when their D was coming together. Now they are going with 35yr old Kevin Williams to eat up blockers, and their 4th DT tackle of the season.

Their front 7 is still terrific, but that was a major loss to their pass rush, and Carolina running right down the middle all game was no surprise.

Week 7 - Lost to Austin Davis and the Rams
Week 8 - Beat a struggling Carolina 13-9
Week 9 - Beat Oakland, rookie Derek Carr by 6 points (30-24)
Week 10 - Tied 17-17 with Giants going into 4th quarter (at home). Seattle then scored 21 unanswered.
Week 11 - Lost to Chiefs 24-7
Week 12 - Beat the almighty Drew Stanton lead Cardinals. 19-3
Week 13 - Beat the scary 49ers offense 19-3
Week 14 - Beat Mark Sanchez' Eagles 24-14
Week 15 - Beat 49ers 17-7 at home (game was pretty close)
Week 16 - Beat the Cardinals and a QB who doesn't even belong in the NFL (Ryan Lindley)
Week 17 - Beat the Rams. QB Shaun Hill is so bad that he tries to ground the ball and gets intercepted

Divisional game - Beat a 7-9 team that had no business being in the playoffs

We are definitely more battle tested

for those who follow Football Outsiders, the Seahawks faced the (out of 44 qualified);

36th ranked- newton
37th ranked- Carr
11th ranked- Eli
13th ranked- Alex Smith
20th ranked- Stanton
28th ranked- Kaep
24th ranked- Sanchez
28th ranked- Kaep
31st ranked- Lindley
35th ranked- Hill
36th ranked- newton

So, the DEFENSE OF THE CENTURY didnt play one qb who could tie his own shoes.

Pats over the same time frame?

3rd ranked- peyton
10th ranked- luck
15th rank- Stafford
2nd rank- rodgers
9th rank- rivers
12th rank- tannehill
32nd rank- geno
26th rank- orton
8th rank- Flacco

So seattle has played TWO Qbs who have been even average at the position since Halloween, and lost one of them.

I dont mind our chances as underdogs in that situation.

Poor journalism, considering that many sports books have already posted Super Bowl point spreads for each matchup.

Seattle would be 2.5-3 point favorites over New England and 7 point favorites over Indianapolis.

this was on around the horn.

should of seen woody paig's face ( LOL...denver writer )..he looked miserable. this is the same guy who wrote of the dumbest columns comparing manning to jordan and how peyton would be on the mt rushmore of sports hahaah

I think being an underdog gives you extra motivation.

I remember vs philly BB told the team that the city of philly already planned a Super Bowl parade even before the game was played.

We all know how that turned out

LOL at Peyton's noodle arm ranked 3rd
