I think Bill goes 3-4 more years. Then he will get a role like Team President or Supreme Leader or something like that.

He will remain involved in the team making recommendations to ownership and making himself available to Nick Caserio but he won’t be full time involved in the running of the team.

So BB would be doing what Bill Parcells wanted to do with BB with the rats?

No. It really hasn't been an area of weakness.

In any case, bringing in "outside personnel specialists" who wear suits, and who never participate in coaching the players on the field, is what every other team does.

He said that in his early 50s. He didn’t make a promise or commitment.
It’s what he felt AT THE TIME. Of course it’s subject to change.

It wasn’t a blame/credit thing. He didn’t want to work for Parcells, expected he would meddle, and he didn’t have confidence in ownership.

Bringing in mike Lombardi to make decisions would be like NASA hiring a teenager who is good at science to run the program.

Like Auerbach, but the Supreme Leader title will be the cherry on the sundae.

    Regular season wins:
    Shula 328
    Halas 318
    Belichick 261

So far every year Belichick has gotten 10+ wins closer to those records. If he hangs on for say, 3 more years and maintains that pace he will be within striking distance of both of these guys. I bring this up every year and every year he is getting closer and closer it's going to be hard to quit if he's 20-30 wins away.

What Belichick does best and likely enjoys the most is coaching football, building a team and preparing it to win a game. Why would he want to go upstairs and not coach?

With Bob Kraft having managed to put the toothpaste back in the tube after the conflicts and controversies of last offseason, what you’re going to see is BB remaining as head coach and head of football operations but have less oversight and control over certain aspects of the team in order to lessen his workload and transition to when he does retire.

This process is already underway. This is Josh McDaniels’ offense. Belichick has input, but control and authority has been delegated to Josh. I’ve also noticed hints that personnel matters may have been transferred to Caserio as well such as the unusual chaos around the cutdown to 53 and the days that followed and the confusion surrounding the pick Cleveland sent back in the Gordon trade. It looked like BB stepped in to remove any conditions attached to the pick before the trade was finalized.

What’s the hurry? In 5 years, McDaniels and Caserio will be roughly the same age BB was when he took over as HC. McDaniels is already making HC money and I would not be surprised to find Caserio is already making GM money as well. This is the advantage one of the NFL’s highest revenue teams has over its competitors: there is no front office salary cap. They can pay these guys what they must to secure a smooth transition.

In 5 years, Brady’s successor will be found and already running the huddle as well. I would have bet you just the opposite last offseason, but Belichick is going to retire with the Patriots and his retirement will be after Brady’s.

    This. This this this.

It blows my mind how so many people in here take that one off-hand remark made roughly a decade ago as the gospel truth and an irrevocable indicator of the future.

He would love nothing more than to mold his Sons to take over the team and keep the Patriots dynasty going.
Would McDaniels if promoted to head coach keep BBs kids on staff?
Would they leave to get out of Dad's shadow?

I don't know how much longer he'll coach, but I firmly believe that when he's out he's totally out. He won't be in some front-office-only role. He'll either be a HC or be completely out of NFL football.
