Patriots Player Departure Bentley released

Spillane was a head scratcher for me because of the lack of speed, but he is very instinctive

At first it was for me as well.. then I went and looked at his highlights.. guys everything you want in a LB.. he's got great speed, and awareness, and doesn't guess.

Oh well, thanks for the work you've put in Bentley! The best of luck!

Just FYI. With Bentley and Andrews gone there is now only 1 member on this team who was part of any super bowl win they had on the active roster (no coaches!).

You win 1 internet if you can say who without looking it up.

Cardona. EDIT: Nevermind, if you ain't first you're last.

I suspect (especially if they deem other players to be better in performance and in the team's culture), then Tavai is most likely a Post June 1st Trade, or outright cut (despite the cap hit).

I certainly hope so. Damn the cap savings; they can afford the hit, easily.

Vrabel is keeping his promise and cutting these entitled players. Tavai is staying over Bentley because of the high dead cap hit. He'll be gone next year for sure though.

Not sure how you guys didn't see this coming with Spillane the highest paid LB and Ellis tied with Bentley for 2nd. These were the moves Bill was supposed to make in 2022, but signed retreads and drafted dudes with no knees.

with the amount of cap space they have available I’m not really sure of the need to save $5 mm in salary by cutting him. I’d prefer they have at least given him the opportunity to compete for snaps/a roster spot in training camp.

Before this move I thought they were all set at backer and going to avoid to position in the draft. Now I think they absolutely draft a linebacker.

Doesn’t make sense to have him compete if they are going to a scheme that requires fast linebackers.

Even with the cap hit for just this year, I wouldn't rule out Vrabel eventually cutting him. Especially if he deems the upside of getting him off of the team to be more beneficial than the downside of getting him off of the team.

It's going to be difficult for Tavai to get playing time. Spillane and Ellis are your starting LB's.

Vrabel has done a great job making changes and putting players on notice. I was getting tired of seeing the same entitled players on defense handed jobs by BB like Wise, Bentley, Tavai, Godsmack, Jennings etc.

Agree

Completely disagree. Dude's an ******* who Sucks.
Don’t care if he’s an *******. He can play many positions and will be a valuable sub. Played very well for us when used properly in 2023

Ellis is not a starter. No way. Gibbens and Tavai are both ahead of him.

Your last sentence is silly.

I wouldn't yet rule out Gibbins getting plays at LB, In addition to other players either already on the roster, or one added through the draft, or any further trades.

Ellis is the 2nd highest paid LB on the team. Lol. Why would they do that to have him as a backup? Whether you like it or not, he's starting next to Spillane as of right now. Tavai's snaps are going to drop dramatically. In fact, his ass would've been cut yesterday had his cap hit been like Bentley's.

Regarding my last sentence. Nah, too many entitled players enabled by Bill. Vrabel needed to get rid of the bad seeds.

Gibbens making $1.3M to Ellis' $6.754M. Ellis is going to have every opportunity to start as of today.

Yep. As for Tavai, I suspect it'll be Goodbye Tavai. I understand that Ellis actually played well last season and showed promise.

Starters aren’t determined by paycheck. Tavai is actually higher paid btw
If they thought Elliss was a starter they wouldn’t have let him go seek a contract. He’s paid like a backup.

Gibbens is a better player Ellis is making 4.8 not 6.75 and again paychecks don’t determine starters.

Your comments about bb and entitled players is actually hilarious and yu doubled down. lol

Think they got rid of Bentley before someone put a tariff on him...

I'd also keep my eye on Chaisson... OLB.. I think is an under radar signing.. could end up carving out a role here..

I disagree.

It costs no cap money to have Tavai on the roster. Consider him as out last LB with starting and ST experience. Clearly, Vrabel considers Ellis as being ahead of Tavai on the depth chart. That isn't a reason to cut or trade Tavai.
===
Vrabel will consider what matters. How does Tavai fit in and his possible role, and will Tavai have the attitude to want to perform that role well?
====
I agree that the team might be keeping him as an emergency player in case of injury and will decide his future deep into camp.

Its almost like you didn't watch Bill coach for 18 years. This is one of the more rediculous statements I've seen made on Patsfans and that says a lot.
