Wow, just read the article and it doesn’t really paint BB in a good light.
- “It was also the latest example of Belichick’s failure to have a proper succession plan for a pivotal member of the organization. He failed to adequately prepare for the departure of future Hall of Fame tight end Rob Gronkowski, then whiffed on Day 2 draft picks (Devin Asiasiand Dalton Keene) before throwing way too much money at Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith during 2021 free agency.
He failed to prepare for Brady’s exit as well, losing him to free agency and circling back to Newton only after the 2020 offseason workout program because the veteran QB lowered his contractual demands. The lack of a plan for what to do without McDaniels was equally inexcusable, considering McDaniels had almost left for the Indianapolis Colts a few years before.
The last failure might turn out to be the worst one — or most certainly the one that most directly cost Belichick his job in New England. Jones and the offense were hapless under Patricia in 2022.”
- “Belichick’s cold demeanor toward Jones throughout the season was obvious to staffers and players, to the point where Kraft met with the quarterback for a temperature check on the situation. The coaching points being given to Jones, according to league sources, were frequently too general — throw the deep ball regardless of the coverage read or even, more simply, just to find an open player — rather than nuanced toward the scheme and opposing defense.”
- “Though the early returns seemed encouraging, even if the results on the scoreboard weren’t, Jones and the offense were doomed by a poorly constructed offensive line. Belichick bargain-shopped at premium positions up front and at wide receiver and got the proper return on his investment.”
- “To be clear, Belichick isn’t out of a job in New England simply because Jones had regressed. It’s much deeper than that.
The split traces back to a string of poor drafts and an adjusted strategy that didn’t get the necessary buy-in from the coach in charge. And when Jones’ performance wavered, Belichick failed to give him the tools necessary to recover, whether it was guidance and direction from the coaches or enough talent at premium positions around him”
