Belichick (via Howe) also claims be didn’t want to draft Mac Jones

I'll retell what I posted an hour before the 1st rd of the '21 draft (curtesy of my guy who has a guy inside Gillette).

Rd 1
Plan 1A: Mac Jones
Plan 1B: Rashawn Slater OT

If Mac was gone...
Plan B at QB.....Davis Mills (willing to trade up in Rd 2 to get it done)

Note: Micah Parsons was removed from Pats draft board because of character issues

Another example of just because a team takes a player, doesn’t mean that’s who they actually wanted.
Felger said this at the time and got flamed by the same people arguing it was Kraft’s fault they took Mac.

People actually think Mike "HAWT TAKEZZZ" Felger is telling the truth?

Does your guy know if Pickens was on our board in 22?

I was told Bill was on a mission to draft players from universities no one ever heard of.

....in '22 I asked predraft but got nothing

Can't wait to see all of Bill's sycophants rooting for the Cowboys. Lol
Even the most irrational BB hater has to recognize that he is being used as the scapegoat by ownership and appreciate what he brought to the team for 24 years. You don't have to be a sycophant to understand that BB has become the lightning rod for the inevitable end of the amazing run and want him to succeed in the future. The same goes for Brady when he left. Personally, I will hold my nose to cheer for the Cowboys if BB goes there because it will bother RKK/Johnathan the most without actually harming the Patriots as a team. When BB wins the Super Bowl with the Cowboys, the media will be quick to point out that this is another reason that Jerry is in the HOF and RKK is not. LOL

BB won’t win a Super Bowl in Dallas because coaching is about 1/10th as important as the players, and especially the QB, and Dallas is a solid wild card/divisional round team.

Let me amend that: BB probably won’t win a Super Bowl in Dallas. No point in any of us pretending to be able to see the future. I think that team has some big flaws.

If true (BB didn't want to draft Mac) then it really makes Mac quite the sympathetic character.
He wasn't just the result of bad luck and 3 different systems, he was actively put in bad positions with his own HC not working on his behalf.
We're quickly becoming one of the cautionary tales of every demise of an empire - it's always ugly with in-fighting and back-biting.

Parsons was gone before 15. The Pats never had a shot at him unless they traded up which was never going to happen. But it was a misfire if they removed him from their board.

The idea that the Pats or any team would have moved up for Davis Mills is kinda hilarious.

Well...then again they did that for a kicker and boy did he ever suck...

He’s a pot stirrer and the best in the business at it. But I did agree with him that bill probably wasn’t in love with Mac to let him fall to him.

Tunes in a Dak jersey

I don't give a rat's ass what Belichick might do in Dallas, Poughkeepsie, or Timbuktu. YOU, on the other hand ...

Ok, here is the actual full article from Howe with more context. Definitely not a defense of Belichick piece - far from it. In fact, it reads like Belichick was expecting Jones to be gone at 15 and was planning on taking Mills at 15.

Relevant part about the Jones draft selection:

How Bill Belichick's mishandling of Mac Jones, offense, led to demise with Patriots
That's a much more reasonable interpretation. Bill didn't think Jones would drop that far and had Mills as his backup plan.

I have watched the video of the Jones draft selection before.

"We're all good with this?"

Bill didn't sound excited about the pick but neither were the other guys saying, yes we need to get him, coach! It was a groupthink selection with Bill pulling the trigger.

Bill's not being used as a scapegoat. He wanted to be the the final say on everything related with the team and there was nobody left to blame but him. You reference Brady, but in 2019 the coachings staff was giving him the cold shoulder and Bill's sycophants were screaming up and down that Brady was washed and he was the problem. Then it was Cam, then it was Mac. Then finally they got their golden carrot in Zappe and he sucked too. There was just nobody left to point to to throw under the bus for Bill.

I hope Bill does win somewhere else as long as it doesn't hurt the Patriots because despite everything at the end, it kinda sucks that his image took a beating and that people want to hold the "Brady could win without you, but you have a horrible record without him" thing. But I sure as hell am not invested in him winning to prop up Jones over Kraft or to upset the owner here. That's just petty.

Felger was right about the Mac Jones thing and it always made sense to me. Bill purposefully did the whole “are we all in agreement?” on camera about selecting Mac, as if to say “don’t just look at me” if things go wrong.

FYI, LOL means laugh out loud.
