Belichick Raving about Garoppolo: Increasing Trade Value or Preparing for the Unthinkable?

I felt more or less the same about this situation. If we can keep both next year while upgrading our weaknesses than Im all for it. We'll have 2 very capable guys at the most important position.

Im a big Jimmy G fan and had him and Carr 1-2 in their class. I actually compared both to each other which is pretty weird considering their in the same class. Anyway I really see a lot of both in each other and their ceiling is a legit top ten QB.

Carr has shown a ton and Jimmy performed very good when his number was called. However theres a ton of unknowns with JG. I mean he played very nice but Carr was thrown to the wolves IN OAKLAND and looks like a top ten guy right now.

Some things teams will look at

1)Sample size.
A)If Im being completely objective Jimmy played slightly above average-average in the Arizona. Bottom line he played good enough to win.
B) Played great-above average against Miami. Obvs good enough to win.

So in the time we saw him play he played great-average.

2)Injury.
Its tough to hold it against him but teams want to know they can count on you, esp for 100+ million that will eventually be paid out.
You ask Bill what he wants in a QB and I guarantee he talks about playing in any weather conditions, Physical and mental toughness and football IQ before measurables etc.

I know a lot of people that just wanted to see him play and would have gave him a pass on stats but it is what it is.

3)Bill and Josh.
Jimmy had two of the best guys in his corner. The biggest drop off in the NFL isn't from player to player. Its coach to coach and Bill is #1 by light years.
And Josh for all his mistakes has been a great OC in the league. Yes hes had Brady but its also not easy making the personnel work that hes had and all the injuries as well.

4)Eventually we have to make a move one way or the other.

Some things going for us

1)Draft Class and FA
Ive said and maintained theres not a QB worth a first round grade. Many guys still have to look at but even the guys with upside (Falk, Mahomes, Mayfield (love this kid), Trubisky and Rudolph) are very raw and will need a lot of time.
So any teams doing their homework know it'll be very tough to get their guy and really build around him.

Same for F.A. theres just nothing out there that resembles a legit franchise QB. And 99.9% of the time theres not.

2)Losing teams and culture wearing thin.
How long can Cleveland, SF, Chicago and even Arizona continue to muck around fuk? Better yet how long can their fans continue? Pressure is on in those places and a few others.

If I can get a 1st and 3th-4th Im taking it and running bc I think thats the absolute ceiling of what we'll get. We still have the best QB and coach in the game.

We'll find another Jimmy G. They'll never be another Brady and Bill ... on the same team.

Edit: He doesn't say they are going to part ways in the interview. (I saw that on a title bar during the segment or at least I thought I saw that. )

Lombardi thinks they are going to part ways with Brady.

EDIT: This is not my opinion.

There's zero problem with keeping them both next year if they want to. Grop's contract doesn't expire until the end of next season.

The problem is that if they keep him to the end of next season they're going to lose him for nothing because he'll be a UFA.

So there's two things to balance -- having another year of cheap insurance vs. getting something good for him.

(FWIW, I think one way or the other Grop will be gone by 2018. @Miguel has laid out a pretty convincing case as to how hard it would be for the team to keep them both past 2018 (because of Brady's contract)).

Dudes...Brady is playing at a HOF level still. He's the best QB in the game right now with no signs of slowing down you keep Brady until you see a dramatic downfall.

Absolutely. Probably should have been more clear. Was really looking at the other factors in play and striking when his value is at is highest, while still having some leverage.

Any chance Patriots trade Brady in off season? At some point you've gotta look to the future. I think Jimmy G is it.

Does he say that elsewhere in the interview?Because he doesn't really say that there.

Also Cowherd is weird looking.

I just realized that. But I saw the show this morning and the title bar below the segment stated something to the effect that he believes the Patriots may part ways with Brady.

I listened to the related Podcast and they basically mimic many of the comments on this board which is BB would do it if he felt like it was the right move and he may have done it to raise JG's value. blah blah blah blah.

Anyways it's just a click bait conversation that sucked me in.

You're right though. He doesn't say they plan to part ways. I'll try to get the video of that segment to see if I misread that title bar.

14:40 for Cowherd's take. (He's full of crap in regards to long passes. Patriots are 2nd in the league in Big Play differential. )

31.35 for the Lombardi discussion.

I don't get this thread.
1. BB is talking good things every week about most players (even those not liked here).
2. Its no secret and nothing new that BB really likes what he sees in JG ..
plus now its definite that he stays till the end of the season.
3. To say that anything's decided with next trade window 4 months down the road is silly.
_

First thing is to wait how the season plays out (injuries, 5th ring etc.)

I agree that keeping both after 2018 is the most unlikely scenario (but not entirely impossible).
But keeping Jimmy through 2017 and (in case Brady stays on top) letting him go in 2018 FA wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Brady's 2017 cap hit is now $14 million. If traded before the 2017 draft it would increase to $27 million.

When you have the GOAT you ride him till the wheels fall off. Trade JG to the highest bidder and find Brady's replacement over the next few seasons . . JMO

If he means this it tells me one of two things..

A. He isn't going anywhere
B. He's not going to get low balled an his trade value

Guess we shall see.....

Personally I want to keep him because I think we have something here in him but unfortunately I don't see how we can with Tom wanting to play at least a few more years. I could never imagine the Pats dumping Tom for JG.

Dumping Brady, a move that would shatter me to my core, could still be the best move for the team. The Pats have to think beyond Brady and JG looks like a keeper. QB's are hard to come by.

Yea it would be heartbreaking but I would be ok with it, I rather be in a position where I know this team will be successful in the long run and not thinking that its over and back to tbe dark ages post Brady, even if it means doing the unthinkable because its no where near as simple to get a franchise QB, they don't grow on trees even tho we have the best coaching staff imo, we need to keep JG.

IF BB thinks my man Bisquick is anywhere as decent as I think he is, the cheap insurance benefit keeping JAG goes away. Point being do you accept a 2nd if its the best offer? I would because you got the several years as a cheap backup for no cost.

I don't think he is, either.

next year will be toms final year as our QB, unless he plays for the vet minimum.

i just can't see bill letting jimmy go even for 2 1st rounders. i think he's seen enough of jimmy to know that he's the real deal.

Translation: The bidding for Jimmy's services will start at a first round pick.

This is what's going on. I'm not sure why people keep going back to the trade Brady scenario, his contract makes that virtually impossible.

I would keep him and try to find a way to get him to sign a two year extension if that's all that's offered. He probably wouldn't do it but I would rather have Garrapolo for 2017 than take a 2nd for him.

He's the best player in football and he's already on a team friendly deal, your post makes absolutely no sense.

We have no idea how other teams value players. Who thought Collins would be worth a third ? (Yes, half a year and all - most would agree that weeks before the trade, a team that thought they'd sign him would give much more)

Cassel goes for a 2. A steal for NE. But at that time, many thought it was a steal for the Chiefs.

Hoyer, Mallett.... this board usually is not very good at setting the market. We don't know if JG is worth two first rounders or a mid second rounder.
