Bedard's source says Maye isn't ready to start and there are things with the offense that he is "working through"

He's working on developing a pain tolerance to being knocked on his ass 40 times a game.
Already has that from last year.

Upside is just that though. It doesn't guarantee anything. Those guys are older and more polished and I believe that's why they went sooner. Maye has the size athleticism and arm to do great things.

Sure, but let's be real, the QB with higher upside was Caleb Williams. He was a stud prospect. If we were 1st overall, we are picking him. He still has the most upside potential.

Like anything else, what does "ready" mean to the coaches. If he is so bad after one quarter of the season that he can't replace Bissett, that would be a problem in my mind.
The issue is the goal for Maye isn't "better than Brissett".

Already has that from last year.
He started two years at UNC. His numbers took a beating his second year with the loss of a strong supporting cast’ lead by receiver Josh Downs.

Yeah, the interior of his OL was leaky that tear too. But the UNC tackled accorded themselves better in the ACC than the Patriot OTs Will this season.

And that’s a lot trickier. Having guys come clean off the edges, esp on his blindside, is far more dangerous and nerve wrecking than a fatty coming free up the gut. Roll outs work much better then.

Boy wonder is going to be streaky at best with this mediocre group of receivers and bottom-feeder offensive line.

Don’t expect dramatic improvement. It’s all I’m saying.

Brock Purdy was a lot better than people thought and also is on a much better team and I wouldn't exactly call this statline "lighting it up"

19 yds / completion

Bedard said that is Maye goes in, they might need to simplify the offense for him. That's interesting. There's clearly some part of the offense that Maye just isn't getting yet.
How much simpler can it get? Honest question. I mean they look about as simple as any team can be. I think they are on par with my mid-90's high school football offense of power I and T. Three yards and a cloud of dust.

Could Maye be a little injured from getting pummeled in 1 drive?

Drake Maye had 34 passing attempts across 3 games in the pre season, mostly in controlled environments against back ups (one game of which was against the back ups of the worst defense in the league last year). Jacoby had 14 passing attempts. Never more than 7 in the pre season.

That's such a meaningless sample size to say that it means Maye is ready.
There's no need to keep finding excuses for Brissett to play over Maye. He's the 3rd overall pick in the draft, so he should be playing over a journeyman QB with a losing record who has also done nothing significant in the NFL. If they don't think he's "ready", then that's Trey Lance level concern.

By the way, Mayo slipped up to a reporter when he said Maye outplayed Brissett in camp/preseason.

Interesting read:

I thought about this some more.. I'd say Maye probably has the higher floor than Williams... but yeah Williams can do it all especially off platform, throwing from any angle and has a great arm. Would be lethal running RPO. Maye is way more of a traditional pocket passer. And a team like us with major questions about the OL probably would rather have a guy like Williams if you need to start someone right now. They’re not starting Maye.

If Maye's ceiling is Herbert 2.0... sign me right up for that today.

Mahomes and Brady weren’t needed as rookies they had capable QBs in front of them. Both would have beaten out Jacoby Brissett.

Allen’s a great example. He gained valuable experience while the team was being build around him.
The whole "sitting for a year" is such an old cliche and there aren't many examples of that as opposed to playing right away. The new era of the NFL allows for mediocre QB's to throw for 4,000 yards and get paid $50M per year.

Brock Purdy played his rookie season as a 7th round draft pick. There's no excuse for Maye.

nice short title

I think the "report" is BS. My guess is the organization is leaking the info to someone to A) Not put pressure on Brissett and B) Not have it widely known he can't play due to the OL.

Maye would not be the backup if things were this much of an issue.

Tua cant return until week 8 and Skylar Thompson is banged up.

Very good shot that the Pats get a much needed win.
Miami could be saying the same thing going into New England.

Neither of these teams are good. Neither will make the postseason. Regardless of who wins Sunday.

Counterpoint: if he was truly ready, he'd be playing. There's no incentive to bench him if he's actually ready. He's come in, look much better, you'd at least have something to give the fans a bit of hope for the future. The biggest reason to not play him is if they are worried that he can't handle it right now and will look bad, it will effect his confidence and the fanbase might reject him.
Or, he is 100% ready. But..they don't want to put him behind the OL. And them coming out and saying he's ready, basically puts blame on the OL. In otherwords, they don't want to publicly call out the OL.

KC threw away a SB title by keeping with Smith imo. Everyone as reporting Mahomes was ripping it up in practice.

Simpler than it is now?
Agreed. The offense can get simpler?

Stare at one receiver until he passes 10 yards and then don't throw the ball. Wait until Hunter Henry turns around and then throw the ball to Henry. Hand the ball off. Don't read the defense. No motion of any kind. Don't make adjustments at the line. Run to the right and throw the ball into the turf. That is the whole offense.

Assuming this is true, sit him as long as he needs. Bedard wouldn't say what it is that he is working through. But he says Rapaport's report that Maye is a ways away is what he is hearing.

Bedard is a legitimate, **** stirring jackass. Phil Perry, who has more honest, credible and genuine cells in his toenails than Bedard has in his entire torso recently had a podcast which centered on the fact that Maye is consistently tearing it up in practice, particularly when he's taking his reps with the ones.

I am not sure a guy that is 6'1" and has to run around has tremendous upside. Look at success versus height for a NFL QB. Few 6'1" and below QBs are successful. I think D Brees was 6' 0" and the only successful QB at that height and below.

I said in another thread - If I had to guess, he's probably still not doing awesome playing from under center. Takes a while to get really comfortable with that. It looked a little haphazard in preseason. But when they run shotgun stuff in practice he probably looks awesome and wows the other guys, which causes reporters to write the stories about how good he is. So in a way both things can be true.

Van Pelt is probably trying to walk the line of holding Maye out until he's good at all, or most, of the offense - even if it means continuing to play Brissett, who has unfortunately been poor at pretty much everything and getting worse. If Brissett gets rocked and has to leave the game then they'll play Maye, but they'd have to run a limited playbook. That's all my guess, anyway.
Maye shouldn’t have to run an under center heavy offense. They should run a gun spread offense! If AVP want to force Maye to run an under center offense then he is really dumb and shouldn’t be the OC
