You're very welcome.
No problem, I'm just curious as to why Jackson would be ahead of Caldwell when Jackson hasnt done squat and has reported to only two practices...or just 1 that he actually had contact in.

And he hasnt played a regular season game for the Patriots. Thanks for your rapid judgement before the season actually begins. He was shaky in preseason, completely new to the Patriots, completely new to the playbook, way different. I didnt expect him to be amazing. Relax and give the guy a frigging chance in the regular season. God, I'm sick of the huge negativity towards him. Yes he hasnt looked great in preseason but you say he looks like Duane Starks. I'm sorry but the guy hasnt played a regular season game, why isnt Chad Jackson being completely ragged on? He hasnt played yet, he must suck. I've tried to hold in my frustration hearing the comments on how Caldwell already sucks because of the preseason and how Dillon will be replaced because he didnt get lots of yards in the preseason. Ellis Hobbs must've sucked because he didnt get an INT...its like the preseason means everything. Give them a freaking chance, some of you.

You're making the mistake of assuming that I'm following everyone else's opinion. I'm not ragging on Chad Jackson because I believe his talent will make up for his lack of football savvy. Caldwell will be ahead of him on the depth chart by default. That may or may not change. I'm not always right...I thought Duane Starks was going to be a great addition (though I didn't go overboard and expect him to replace Ty Law) and I was wrong about that, many of us were. But we're not talking about some rookie here, we're talking about a 4-year NFL veteran who hasn't amounted to anything.

Of course, the same could've been said about David Patten when the Patriots brought him in, and that acquisition turned out to be great. Caldwell could end up being the next Patten. I'm not ruling that out, and in not ruling that out I'm giving him a chance. But I have a right to be skeptic, just as you have a right to feel confident in him. If he can help this team out then I'd love that more than anything. This team needs all the help it can get.

I wasnt saying that you said anything about Jackson...I was just pointing out that he has done nothing on the field since his last reception in Florida. People can rag on Caldwell all they want if he does end up being terrible during the season but its as if Preseason is what matters most.

Given our total and utter lack of WR depth, to me this curious move means one or all of the below:

1. BB is still so unhappy with our return game that he wants to roster a player to take up the last WR spot who can also be a (hopefully) above average return guy.

2. Chad Jackson is ready to take the field.

3. Deion Branch will actually return to the Patriots.

My guess is its probably a combo of 1 & 2.

I was thinking along the same lines but i'd add

4. They picked up a cut veteran or are about to and they are cutting Bam early so he has a bit more time to maybe get picked up by another team. Or on to our practice squad if not claimed.

Man, this board is severely overrating Bam Childress. Clearly, this was a special teams move.

Nor am I worried about guys taking roster spots when Gene Mruck, Wesley Britt, Marquise Hill, Willie Andrews, etc. are still on the team.

Clearly, a lack of roster spots is not a problem for the Patriots right now.

This only means that Bam Childress was our #5 receiver and that, rather than Childress ever see the field, BB would have moved to a 3 TE offense for the duration.

I expect another receiver to come onto the team, and when he does, one of these players will be cut: Smith, Mruck, Hill, Britt, Andrews.

Relax.

Jonathan Smith will play on special teams more than Childress ... that's why we made the move.

Maybe Andews is more injured and they needed a returner???

I sense some reverse engineering in prep. for the Bills game. That's all I can think of.

This guy ran back a punt 70 yards against us and he's in our division.

BB's obviously had his eye on him and he plays the same position as Childress.

Seems BB thinks he offers more at WR/ST than Childress. Anybody here been watching this guy and have an opinion?,(other than limited stats which are impressive if a small sample).

my guess is that he was not good enough to make the team.

"He is on the shorter side and doesn't have good bulk. He lacks strength and will get pushed around at times. He has marginal top-end speed. He shows good vision, shiftiness and elusiveness as a PR but he lacks explosive top-end speed to ever become a legitimate weapon in that area. He does, however, provide good versatility as a back-end-roster-type player. He is elusive in space and shows good vision and patience with the ball in his hands. He does have very reliable hands. Shows good awareness and route running skills for a young player. Does a nice job of finding soft spots in zone."

Scout speak. They say the same damn thing about almost every single WR under 6'. It's meaningless blunk.

RayClay is right. BB has had his eye on this guy.

If he solidifies our punt/kickoff return game, we'll all be saying "BB, what a freakin' genious".

That part sounds pretty good.

By that it doesn't mean I know anything, I don't.

I just know when he ripped off a 70 yard PR against us he went into the Belichick mental rolodex and I'm sure BB's checked into him thoroughly in case he became available.

And I'm not saying he could be a good receiver, but who's saying he can't?

Where would he have gotten a better shot to play than here???!!!!

Priceless!

Exactly, this sh!t is getting stupid! What in the world is going on?

Aside from Troy Brown, this is the only other receiver who did anything in preseason.

The only way this would have made any sense would have been if Branch was coming back. But the Pats immediately filled the spot with a hack from Buffalo!

Tonights the first time I've seen a whole lot of Childress. Sort of strikes me like a 1993 Troy Brown - an athletic all-purpose guy who bounces on and off the Patriots roster. He even has the same jogging head-tilt that Brown has.

And, if I'm right with my comparison, he should soon be on his way to Long Island for a stint with the Jets.

I like Bam Bam, I don't know a thing but I'm not to thrilled about this

Wow! If he's a hack, what is Childress?

Smith is 4 months older. He's caught 16 passes in two different seasons, has a kick return average of 25.3, a punt return average of 13.2 including a 70 yard TD and three PRs over 20 yards, he's rushed the ball 3 times for 12 yards and has a tackle in each season.

Bam Childress has played one game. Has 3 receptions and 4 tackles.

Comparing their college careers is ridiculous, but you can do it if you want.

I guess the "hack" might also back up at quarterback.

"AT TECH: Versatile, big-play performer who was Tech’s top offensive weapon in 2003. . . All-ACC performer who enjoyed one of the top seasons ever by a Georgia Tech receiver as a senior . . . A talented wide receiver and punt returner who has also lined up at tailback and quarterback at times in his career . . . Former high school quarterback with tremendous athletic ability . . . Drafted in the seventh round (214th pick) by the Buffalo Bills in the 2004 NFL Draft.

Finished his career in second place in Tech history in career receptions (174), fourth in career receiving yards (2,238) and ninth in career TD catches (12) . . . Scored 15 touchdowns on receptions, rushes and returns and also threw one touchdown pass . . . Also stands 10th with 2,931 career all-purpose yards . . . Career average of 12.2 yards per punt return ranks fifth in Tech history."

Color me one outsider ... to whom these moves are
incomprehensible.

Best i can make of them - and it's not very plausible -
is what BoTown said:
Jackson is healed AND Branch (or an equivalent WR) is returning ...
PLUS (as Upstater said)
J. Smith was brought in as a returner, and one of the obvious gameday inactives is still to be released.

If that parlay pays off ... boy, will i doff my cap to Piolichick !
