It's pathetic that we couldn't give Emmanuel Sanders a better offer. He would have been a darn good receiver in this system--he wasn't expensive at all.

you BLAME the Patriots because he signed with the Steelers?..after the Steelers matched the Patriots offer?? THAT is the Patriots fault? Of course, YOU know better than anyone involved what the correct figure the Pats SHOULD have offered to wrest the restricted free agent away...care to put it in print right here, the exact figure YOU come up with that would have helped the "pathetic" Patriots?

The offer discussed in hundreds of posts was $2M more than they offered (Sciz mentions $4M). Most thought that this was too high (as did Belichick). It is not the patriots that was pathetic. What was pathetic was the half-hearted offer. As I recall, every media outlet though that PITT would match. Belichick didn't have any secret information. They did match.

I am not commenting on the patriot decision, jusrt recalling the facts as I recall them. This train has long ago left the station.

OK..you're going to have to explain your post to me...I guess I'm too stupid...you say the offer by the Pats wasn't pathetic but the offer was pathetic because it was half hearted??? WTF????????????????????????????????????????

4 million dollars would definitely have been too high for Emmanuel Sanders.

It's possible that 3 million would have been acceptable. Belichick obviously didn't think so, and he gets paid 500k or so per game to make those decisions.

We as fans look back in hindsight and obviously don't like it due to what we've seen so far. I don't have any problem whatsoever with the debate that Belichick dropped the ball a bit---BUT...he also did not expect Hernandez to be gone either. One may argue that he should've made a move at the end of June with time for TC and learning the playbook sufficiently enough. That would be my complaint.

Of course we're only 2 games into the season so far, and as you've noted yourself there should be significant improvement that we can expect.

As I said, I don't blame the offer to Sanders or the failure to bring in a high priced free agent WR. I do however, question why he did not attempt to make a move at the end of June/beginning of July in terms of a trade etc, and that's my right as a fan. Of course in fairness to Belichick, he very well may have tried multiple moves to bring in another vet and it just didn't work out because coaches and GM's knew that we were somewhat desperate.

Everyone take a breath, This is going exactly as its supposed to

You're right.

Amendola getting injured in the first half of the first game of the season is exactly what is supposed to happen.

This is why you don't replace Welker with him. Alas, the Patriots seemed to totally ignore the fact this guy can't stay on the field.

I'm not too upset that PitsDirt matched the offer; I'm not sure how much higher if any I would've
gone myself. I just wish that Bill had done a better job with the 3rd-rounder he was able to keep.

The title of the thread is 'available receivers'.

We already passed several windows of player availability:
1. Free agency (restricted (Sanders), unrestricted (Welker), and franchise (Cruz)
We brought in the kid from Buffalo (Donald Jones?), Mike Jenkins and Lavelle Hawkins and cut them all.
2. We drafted OK: Dobson, Boyce.
3. Were aggressive in UDFA: Thompkins, Harrison, and Sims

So what's leftover now is pretty slim pickins:
1. Not really interested in Branch or Stallworth - due to age concerns and their having lost at least two steps
2. Not really interested in Brandon Lloyd because Brady had to stroke his ego and he's already got his hands full with the rookies.
3. Trades: NFL not really a trading league. Deadline too early and most teams don't want to give up on season and ability to sell out their stadiums later in the year. New England never has the sell out concern, but in the markets of the rebuilding teams that might trade with you they are concerned about ticket sales.

Surprisingly, even though only 1 or 2 trades happen every year leaguewide, Belichick is involved about 1 out of 3 years.

Many have commented that veterans can't get our system and that has been shown with: Ochocinco, Galloway, and even Lloyd to an extent though he ended up with better numbers than I would have thought.

But there were a few who were productive right away: Moss, Welker, Gaffney

And a few others who were somewhat productive: Caldwell, Stallworth

I think we have to make do with what we have for a few more weeks and see where we are at. If we are 5-1 after 6 games and folks are getting healthy, then they'll stand pat. If we are 3-3 after 6 games and Brady is still completing 55% of his passes instead of 65%, then they will probably check around at who is available, but there won't be much available. Never is in the NFL.

You know what, I wrote out a huge, long post to give you some facts because you're a world-renowned cherry-picker. So I'll give you the short version.

Things like Edelman completely de-cleating Cromartie and being wide open for a 50 yard TD if Brady didn't miss him completely. Which would have given him 2 plays of 20+ while Welker has none. It would actually be 3 of 20+ if his spectacular effort on a 3rd and 15 didn't get called back for holding. He still has 1 more than Welker despite that.

Or that Welker has less ypc than Edelman, even including his gift 10 yards that B-More stupidly didn't challenge.

But you have the rest of your life to argue minutiae and I'm tired so I'll just say the haters are going to hate.
Me cherry picking?
You have 6 years of Welker playing with Brady to go on and you are going to use his stats from one game in Denver?
I guess the 2 short TDs lowering his ypc makes him a worse player.
Edelman was the focus of the passing game and the passing game looked worse than it has in many years.
You are now arguing that 1 20+ play in 2 games makes Edelman better than Welker because Welker didn't have one in his first game in Denver? Really?
And you do realize that is 1 20+ play and 19 10 or less, averaging about 6 yards a catch? You really cant refute that he is catching passes the defense is willing to allow.

As I predicted, The Jets put their best corner on Thompkins, Thus taking him out of the game. They doubled Edelman because they had no threat from the TE position. Add Gronk to the mix and its a completly differnt game.

The Pats need to simplify the game for the rookies. Tom Brady needs to get his emotions in check and be supportive of these rookies. Brady has alot of fault here too. He led Thomkins out of bounds on a deep pass. He is not a good long passer. Teams play him in 20 yard box because he can't throw long.

Lets give the Jets some credit here too! Their front 7 is very good and they shut down the Pats running game.

Its a learning experince for the rookies. I think this team will be better given some time. I see them at 3-3 and then the season begins. 2-0 in the division is huge. The defense is good enought to keep them in games.

Edelman was not double teamed.

Jason La Canfora ?@JasonLaCanfora 4m

On Danny Amendola's injury, there isn't a true timetable. Could be quite awhile. One source put it: "He'll definitely be back this season."

It sounds like the only guy we get back in the short term is Gronk. Let's hope for a rapid ascension up the learning curve for Thompkins and Dobson.

Eh, "he'll definitely be back this season" is a non answer if there ever was one. I wouldn't look too deeply into that quote other than it's basically saying what we all know and that is groin injuries are tricky and recovery times can be unpredictable.

First off, let me say that I think your post is spot on in a lot of areas and that it was well thought out, etc.

My only debate would be the fact that ALL of these players had the ability to learn the system just the same as anyone else would have, since they were here from day one. None of them came in during the season--so that's the difference entirely. They were all brought in during the spring, mini-camp, etc. They all had the ability to learn the playbook with plenty of time before any live action.

Gaffney may be the one exception--as I can't remember, and even he didn't contribute on any level until the postseason when he had the system down pat much more.

None of these examples are guys who came in during the season, as it would be virtually impossible.

I'm guessing LaCanfora knew about the report prior to his tweet, and he was referring to him coming back at some point during the season with the recent news.

Otherwise, his comments wouldn't make any sense whatsoever on a groin pull. Many of us expected him back in the next couple games prior to hearing the recent developments.

Whats Jacob Tammes situation up in Denver? Always liked him, good routes, ok hands...wouldn't he be a good fit as no2 TE behind Gronk?

Yup. Tamme would be a major upgrade for us and gets lots of reps. He'll get few reps for Denver.

Denver doesn't throw away receivers and tight ends. I don't that the pats would offer Denver enough to part with him.

Kenny Britt might soon be on the trading block.

Kenny Britt might soon be on the trading block.

Could be a candidate for the offseason (not ridiculously priced etc), but I'd have a difficult time imagining any outsider coming in at WR who hasn't had experience here before--let alone a guy like Kenny Britt.

I think we'd all be somewhat interested in the offseason though.
