Austin Carr and Jacob Hollister

How come Carr did so well in college but was then undrafted?

From Wiki:

"In his senior year in 2016, Carr led the Big Ten Conference in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns.[5] Following the 2016 season, Carr was named the Richter–Howard Receiver of the Year and was named First Team All-Big Ten by the coaches and media.[6]"

I don't follow college ball or the draft, but what do you need to do to get drafted if this doesn't cut it?

He high pointed that ball in the back of the end zone like a veteran. Rookies usually mistime a play like that. If he keeps making plays like that in practice and in the preseason, the team will find a way to keep him and develop him.

Totally agree with ^ what's said about Carr he has the make up and is the kind of receiver that does well in this system. He reminds me of Bigger version of Wes Welker and he moves or glides into his routes like Edelman. With anymore improvements I think Austin Carr's a keeper he could be a bottom of the roster type guy. And we know with Eldelman and Dola it's just a matter of time before they are banged up...Carr is a nice dept guy to have.

- Troy Brown -- drafted in 8th round of 1993 draft (the spot for a 7th round comp pick today)
- Wes Welker - undrafted
- Julien Edelman - drafted 7th round
- Danny Amendola - undrafted
- TJ Moe - undrafted

Some of those are pure slot guys, some of them are much more versatile but still got that label anyway.

Take Moe out of the line up and you have a Tom Brady dream team.

Hollister didn't look especially athletic for his size; he performed well tonight but against NFL combination I don't think he has the size/athleticism combo to have a definitive role. Could catch on as an end-of-the-roster guy, but I wouldn't bet on it. He seems like the kind of guy who's athletic enough to get the job done in the preseason but didn't really display any skills that suggest they would translate to the next level.

Carr was genuinely intriguing though. He worked the sidelines and made contested catches. That TD grab was beautiful: timed his jump perfectly, high-pointed the ball, made a clean catch, and absorbed the contact well. Of the two, I like his chances better. Our WR depth chart is crowded as is, but if he doesn't catch on here I bet he'll end up on someone's roster.
I couldn't disagree more. I thought Hollister looked explosive and athletic. Unless we think hurdling guys is common place for TEs nowadays. I feel he has a better chance of making the team than Carr, especially if O'Shaunessy can't get on the field.

Carr is going to have the most difficult time of anyone making the team, EVEN if he duplicates or surpasses what he did tonight in the other games. Unless a WR winds up on the short term IR, he's not going to make the team. Which in all honesty, makes me sad because he was one of my draft binkies. Like him a lot. But with Edelman, Cooks, Hogan, Amendola and Mitchell ahead of him, he would need Slater to go on short term IR to make the team.

Check out Patchick's link above. Summary:

- College walk on
- Barely played before his senior season
- Plays faster than his measurables (aka slow combine/pro day numbers)
- Viewed primarily as a slot guy for the NFL, even though he actually graded out well on deeper routes

Those guys might get drafted in the 7th round if they're lucky. Here's a recent sample of some of these types of players the Pats had:

- Troy Brown -- drafted in 8th round of 1993 draft (the spot for a 7th round comp pick today)
- Wes Welker - undrafted
- Julien Edelman - drafted 7th round
- Danny Amendola - undrafted
- TJ Moe - undrafted

Some of those are pure slot guys, some of them are much more versatile but still got that label anyway.

See these Guys don't come in with Great NFL credentials but with hard work they become household names I think Austin Carr fits the bill.

scott I think the Pats are going to take their chances on Hollister making the PS I think his body has a ways to go he needs to get more stronger he looks a little light in the pants. Move TE's like Hollister are a dime dozen and can be add anytime. On Austin Carr I disagree Pats can carry Six WR's at the expense of carrying only Two TE's. They have plenty of Spots on the PS to carry extra TE's.

No one can be certain a guy will pan out. But sometimes you have to make a decision and trust what you see. If people could see the future, Edelman and Welker would have been drafted high. But there was no certainty with them. But not turning over your roster is a recipe for mediocrity in the NFL.

I agree with you that Hollister has a better chance to get waived and snuck onto the practice squad, whereas Carr most likely winds up on the Jet's team if waived. I would love for the Pats to have Carr on the active roster, I felt he was the most Pat's like receiver available in the draft, and was thrilled they signed him.

That being said, I believe Hollister received the highest guaranteed money out of any UDFA signed by any team (or was that Carr ?), and the injury history of the Pat's top 2 TEs, I'd be surprised if they only carry 2 TEs.

Is that list is supposed to convince us that Carr won't make the Patriots? Because all three of those players DID play for the Patriots.

But yes, there's always a camp WR phenom, and few of them amount to much in the long run. In defense of the Carr fan club, he's coming in with a very different pedigree: a Biletnikoff finalist who led the Big Ten in receptions, yardage and touchdowns. Plus he's smart and is used to having to outwork everybody and prove himself.

A nice pre-draft profile, if anybody's interested: Austin Carr, Denver Broncos 2017 NFL Draft target?

Definitely a fair point. He just hasn't impressed me vs. man at camp. Chatham on twitter & @patfanken here are echoing similar sentiments.

His catch radius & awareness vs. zone & keeping feat in bounds are NFL caliber skills. I just want to see him with the 1s vs. man.

patsinthesnow I think he has more than your boy HarPah!

Not sure where you get that from, they're being drafted higher and higher with Engram and Njoku going in the first round this year and Gerald Everett in the second.

Case Keenum is an NCAA legend statistically.

I think they like O'Shaunessey for that third spot but there's still time for him to win it. Hopefully Hollister gets a spot on the practice squad

My thoughts exactly. The Big Ten isn't the Patriot League (no pun intended.). I realize he was a walk-on, but his senior season was ridiculously good. I had the same thought this morning as a prior poster did here: I understand he's not Brandin Cooks as far as speed is concerned, but can he return kicks? I just remember listening to the NFL Sirius channel after he was signed here and hearing multiple guys I respect, Gil Brandt, Pat Kirwan, etc. just raving about Carr.

The TD and sideline catches by Carr were both poorly thrown balls, they were behind him he made the adjustments to get the ball. We will see what BB thinks. I can't see him making it to the PS.

Devin Lucien showed me more than Carr did last night.

Had his man beat deep and got borderline interfered with and couldn't get to the ball which Garoppolo could have delivered a little bit better

Had his man completely deep that resulted in the guy just grabbing his arm

Then that deep ball from Brissett which yes it was out of bounds but he went up and got it over two defenders.
Once we start getting good oline play, everyone else will see what we see. He's stuck around and learned the offense.

We have 4 receivers that can do what Carr does. Lucien has a unique deep threat skillset (I'm not forgetting about cooks and Hogan when I say that). I'm almost hoping he lays low this preseason so we can put him on the PS, but he'll open some eyes in the next 3 games.

2, Amendola and Edleman are on the wrong side of 30.

I thought both looked good last night, but imagine what Edelman or Amendola would have done against that secondary.

Hollister has a legitimate shot at the third TE spot. Carr has a tougher road to grab a spot, just due to numbers.

Case Keenum has a season and a half of NFL starts under his belt. In the context of this conversation, that's a success story.
