Asante Samuel

Of course, the other key is getting rid of Arrington, the weakest link in the secondary.

Who led the team in interceptions last year? If anything, McCourty was the weakest link in the secondary last year.

And no, I have not lost my marbles.

Disagree.

Has anyone posted about how he dropped that SB int yet? That's where these threads always go

Although its difficult to say "no" to a serviceable player who is available cheap, we, more than other fans in the NFL know exactly what we would be getting with Asante.

When he was in his contract year here with the Patriots he refused to play Beleichick's scheme - instead preferring to gamble in order to pad his INT stats.

He got his INTs but he also gave up the big plays Belichick was trying to prevent.

Samuel is again in a contract year - so we know there is little chance of him agreeing to play in a zone scheme.

If he somehow convinced Belichick to take a chance on him I would welcome him back - we do need someone CAPABLE of playing man2man when need be - but it's more important that we have someone who will play the zone when asked to do so... And that's not Assante.

McCourty had a bad year but no way was he the weakest link. Pretty much any one playing safety besides Chung was.

I believe that a big reason for McCourty's decline was due to lack of reliable safety help.

If the Pats can get him for a late round pick, 5th, 6th...IMO there is a good chance that he returns.

*** eagles will trade him for a 5 or 6 but that Pats won't trade for him, including a 2013 late rounder

The Pats need to re-do much of their secondary, especially at slot corner.... and the addition of Samuel would give them enough decent players at the corner slot to make the move. Of course, the other key is getting rid of Arrington, the weakest link in the secondary.

*** WTF

Dowling returns, a couple of secondary free agents, the 2nd and 3rd year players gaining more experience... i dont think this secondary will be anywhere near as bad as sme are suggesting.

And, hopefully, with a re designed pass rush, the defense, overall, will be a huge amount better than last season. I see this defense working its way into a top ten, or even better.

*** For once I wish you were right, but I don't think so. It will be wicked fun to shove this in my face were it to become so. Do it!

And no, I have not lost my marbles.

I beg to differ

So many things wrong with this post. Itemized.

Not interested. Don't think his style fits the current pats scheme, think he burned bridges here on his way out, and honestly really don't want to have to root for him again. Very me type of player

Despite 2 other player players dropping INTs on that drive and having the worst secondary in football people say no for a 5th or 6th with a reduced contract are u people drunk????? He would instantly be better than anyone they have now despite his decline that's like the Packers (the actual worst pass d) saying no to Woodson there only good secondary player over something that happened 5 years ago like that was the only opportunity to win the Game that shall not be named. If anyone watched the Eagles last year he was there best corner.

Yea I don't know how Pats fans of all people are turning down DB talent and getting picky with who should play in this secondary. Pats have had the worst pass defense in the league for 2 years in a row and just last year were rolling out WRs and special teamers to cover people. Yet they're too good for Samuel? I know Samuel is overpaid and a little overrated but at least he's an actual defense back. Baby steps people.

So...so the guy wants to play and actually does and gets 3 ints in that game but the coach didn't want to play him at all and the guy has the most INTs over a 5 year stretch in NFL history yet no one gives him credit :bricks: yeah he shouldn't have said it but do we want honesty or canned remarks they shouldn't ask the questions if you the fans don't want the truth. What he did on the field is all that matters (produce) we don't know these guys personally so everything else is just hearsay. And I'll say again 2 other patriots let INTs go thru there hands on that very drive he did but no one ever mentions that.

Well you certainly have a different take than me if you are blaming the coach for benching an underachieving poor attitude player. It seems that it worked too, as his play improved dramatically as a result.
Not sure where you are getting your stats either, but he does not have the most Ints in a 5 year stretch.

There is no possible reality that says Asante Samuel was the Eagles best corner last year. Of course the fact that they wish to give him away kind of proves that.

Are we really sure that Samuel would be 'available cheap?' Personally, I am not seeing that at all, unless you are only referencing the draft compensation and not the cap hit and salary. While Samuel may take a 'bit' of a pay cut, he certainly isn't going to allow himself to come cheaply to anyone.

In all honesty, I thought that Samuel excelled best in zone coverage, and was pretty close to awful in man to man coverage. He is best used when he can jump a route in zone schemes, and doesn't play man to man 1/2 as effectively as you are claiming or remembering.

Apologies of course if I'm incorrect about this, but that's the way I always have seen Asante. Best in zones, and not too great in man to man. It certainly wouldn't be the first time I was wrong though, so who knows?

He would have to agree to a large paycut, which he won't. All indications are he is an extremely selfish player and wouldn't be wanted here anyway.

Corner is fine as is, but I'd like to add another starter/nickel corner if possible. Samuel isn't the guy. Your obsession with Arrington is making you a hard poster to not ignore.

Dowling returns, a couple of secondary free agents, the 2nd and 3rd year players gaining more experience... i dont think this secondary will be anywhere near as bad as sme are suggesting.
The corner spot will be much better if Dowling can play. Arringtons fine as a nickel, but I'd like to see one more corner because of the risk of injury. Safety needs work.

And, hopefully, with a re designed pass rush,
Huh? If by redesigned we mean replacing better players with worse ones, we are all set. If not there is a ton of work to be done.

the defense, overall, will be a huge amount better than last season. I see this defense working its way into a top ten, or even better.
There have not been enough additions (much less covering the losses) to say this without just closing your eyes and blindly hoping.

And no, I have not lost my marbles.
No,but you haven't made much of a case to back up your opinions.

I'm not blaming the coach at all like you said it probably made him better but from his perspective the coach tried to bench him and he showed him that that wasn't the right thing to do. Irregardless of who's perspective is right it got the desired results. Your probably right about the INTs but I remember hearing it during the 2010 season and he's been a top 5 corner the last 2 years no matter what metric or eyeball test there is.

Several notes in response to your post:

--Samuel coming on a 'reduced' contract that is due to pay him 10+ this year, and 11 1/2 next year doesn't mean too much, does it? What do you expect his 'reduced' rate to be? Maybe 8 1/2---9 million per? That's about the absolute BEST case you're going to get from Asante, and that wouldn't put him close to being in Belichick's price range.

--Forget about the incorrectly perceived 'cheapness' of the deal. The only thing 'cheap' is the asking draft pick compensation. That doesn't mean anything. It's his salary that is way too high.

--Although I will agree that Samuel would have been better than anyone else that we had in the secondary last year (recently had this debate with Deus), it should also be noted that Belichick prefers players who work hard on every play, buy into the scheme, and of course...tackle. Freelancing isn't looked at with much approval here. There are many secondary players who may not have the raw talent that Samuel has in certain situations, but it is safe to say that all of them make up for some of that by providing other positive attributes. 'Raw' talent in certain situations does not mean everything.

--Belichick does not tend to overpay at certain situations, and CB is certainly one of them. He has done a good job (finally) of drafting cheap players who are young, talented, and work hard at what they do. Most of all, they all provide great value right now with cheap pacts. The Leigh Bodden deal is about the best you're going to get from Belichick, at least until McCourty is due. Belichick will likely allow Arrington to walk next year, rather than pay him the 6 or so million per that he will get from someone else, and he led the NFL in INT's last year...That should tell you something.

--Samuel certainly was not their best CB last year, although that is a debate that could go both ways, and one that I can respect your stance on. There were many stats that pointed to Samuel's downfall last year such as his having only 3 INT's, and only 10 passes defended (Sterling Moore had 10 passes defended in only 6 games, while Samuel had that in an entire season). However, I also saw a stat that pointed to one of his positives, which was holding opposing QB's to only 48% completion rate (Arrington in comparion, allowed a 54% completion rate). There's also the fact that Samuel does not like to tackle and shies away from contact like a turtle going back into his shell.

--His attitude doesn't exactly point to the team, rather to himself. That does not bode too well for a potential NEP prospect.

Why Asante Samuel Was the Best Cornerback in the National Football League in 2010 - Philadelphia Eagles : Philadelphia Eagles

Even at his advanced age, Samuel is still a quality cornerback. He allowed only two touchdowns last season, intercepted three passed and deflected six others. Quarterbacks had a cumulative QB rating of 52.4 against him in 2011

Asante Samuel Trade Rumors: Denver Broncos Interested In Asante Samuel, According To Report - SB Nation Philly

So yeah he was there best corner. They are not willing to pay 3 high priced CBs it's not the production.

He's also the All-time leader in INT TDs in the playoffs and fifth all time in postseason INTs

The only eyeball test that puts Samuel as a top 5 corner the last 2 years would be a seeing eye dog.
The Eagles do not want him on their team, that should tell you something.
He has become a selfish player who gambles way too much with disregard to the defense called and refuses to tackle.

Been There, DONE THAT & DONE US IN!
I keep thinkin about that butter fingers miss that would sealed'da deal anyway NO Use in rehashin.......I'll Pass!

How was his drop worse than Welker's this year??

That said, I oppose bringing him back, for reasons other posters have stated.
