Are you supporting Wes or against him?

I support Wes but i think he needs to talk to the old #83 before things get too far.

When it comes to the NE Patriots the grass is almost never greener on the other side....especially for NE receivers.

Wes was wildly underpaid on his last contract. I can't see why any rational fan wouldn't be supporting Welker when it comes to this contract.
If he had held on to that ball, he be under contract right now.

He my have outperformed his last contract, but he was hardly underpaid.

???

You've got to admit that he was at least underpaid, even if you don't agree with the thought that it was as bad as many think.

His performance was top 3 WR in the NFL for years going now.

He wasn't just underpaid, he was seriously underpaid.

He did everything asked of him, never complained, never held out etc...I am fully on board with Welker here, and frankly I am disappointed in the NEP for not being able to bend a bit and get it done; even dispite their success at most negotiations.

Give the man his due, or at least something reasonable. It wouldn't appear that the money is half the issue that the length of term is, so I wish they'd tack on another year to their 2/16 proposal and get this done already.

The asinine contracts average receivers received in free agency a month ago has made this situation much more complicated. I don't know what amount is deserved, which appears to be the argument, but you can't throw the money the redskins threw at Pierre Garcon for a WR who is 31 and is only one game against James Harrison away from losing his quickness for good.

Garcon is 25 and all things considered was productive for the colts last season.
Though i agree...some of these WRs are really being overpaid or expecting ridiculous deals.

quite simple......if he was underpaid, he should find another profession

they are all overpaid IMO, but I guess I can't complain since I don't go to games anymore.

besides, even if he was 'underpaid', it has nothing to do with things moving forward. if anyone here thinks he should recoup any $$ for past performance, then they have rocks in their heads. beyond that, he's 31 and his body has taken a beating. there does not need to be much falloff in his game for him to become an average 3rd down WR.

he should embrace the humility of a far more successful player........troy brown

I reality think some guys are symbols on the team. Our defense got worse after 2009 because we let Scott Fujita and limited Sharper to 2nd string. Our 2 leaders.
Welker is still in his prime, but we got rid of 2 leaders that were not, and it impacted the way the defense plays, and still haven't recovered from it.

Its an old saying, if it ant broke don't fix it.

Dilfer was a mediocre QB at best, but for some reason he kept that team together and won a SB, threw leadership and ball control. As soon as they ditch him the Ravens fell completely apart because they destroyed the undefinable thing that makes a team.

Welker has been seriously underpaid because of his size, but no one saw his heart, and leadership. Releasing him will change the offense forever, and the chances are your not going to find his replacement. I mean ever. I really can't see someone walking into his position and playing better.
Its a risky position for the Pats to be playing around with because its one of Bradys few Blitz drop offs or release valves.

Not having a welker type at that position could mean more hits on Brady, more interceptions, or less 3rd down conversions.

I support him for those reasons. He should stay and train a replacement for a couple years.

Why are we even talking about his old contract??? I don't care if he out performed it or not!! When I next go ask my boss for a pay rise I'll tell him I feel I've done more work than my salary is worth and I deserve a bonus shall I?

LIFE DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT!!!!

Life works exactly like that.

I support Wes' decision to sit out mandatory camps, if he gets hurt, he is screwed. However, I am a Patriots fan, I want him to sign for cheap. I don't care about how much money he makes.

Life works exactly like that.

No...it doesn't. You're given a pay rise if you tow the line and do your job and don't complain about it.

But people are saying he should get market value for what he's done in the past. Life certainly doesn't work like that.

You get paid the value you are to that company. Successful companies do that anyway. You don't over pay for replaceable commodities or commodities which aren't hard to find. I think the Patriots have proved on many an occasion that WR is a replaceable commodity on their offense....especially the slot position...and I've said many a time we'd benefit from not lining Welker up as a split end.

So you know nothing about the corporate world, then.

But, the truth is Welker will get his money. And he should try to get as much as he can before his career runs down.
If the head office is going to be cold and business like and not pay him for past performace , then Welker should be the same. Its the smart thing for him to do for his life and family.

But he will get payed, no matter what anyone thinks.
It just won't be by the Patriots. Plenty of teams will pay him his money, maybe even the Jets will

Don't know, because I don't know what the Patriots are offering/what Wes wants.

You do know at least half of that equation, a two year $16M deal was the only long term offer they have placed on the table. Negotiations have been stagnant for a year since. That offer was at the time btw about $3M more than he will make having played out the original contract combined with being tagged this season. Considering they have since entered three year $12-15M deals with guys his age or older at the position who had yet to take a snap in this offense - one of whom once he did produced nothing - I'd say he wants a fair deal given his consistent and often league leading production in this offense over the last 5 seasons. Until they offer him at least a three year deal with double digit guaranteed money, I'll take Wes side just like I did with Brady in 2005 and again in 2010. They ****ed with even him to an extent, they seem to have to with their best and most productive and durable and least problematic core guys, like it's a compulsion. I'm all for not coddling players but this organization takes that to ridiculous extremes in the oddest possible instances...as if they have to feign alienation to prove a point.

It did here for Seymour. And after the fact apparently for Mankins.

I love Wes, and I really do hope he gets a long-term deal. That said, he should Patriot-up and get his butt to minicamp when it's time.

team trumps player

i'm not a pats fan, but that's just how it should be with smart teams

team trumps player
