All quiet on Hightower front or Dont'a-do-it FA tour

I'm really confused on the consensus here. Some reports say he's probably still resigning here, and some around here are still thinking he will. While some are basically calling him good as gone.

The strange thing is that it sounds like the Patriots have the best offer on the table and no one is beating it. Imo pride is playing a big role in this, I'm guessing he was expecting 60+ for 5 and the Patriots went 40 for 4, and no one else wants to go for 5. That's a huge cut on his expectations and I'm sure it is taking some getting used to. Pity loves linebackers but they just tagged Bell and paid huge money to Brown so I have a hard time seeing them being high bidder for Hightower. However if they are close he could give the Patriots both middle fingers and sign.

Bang on. For months he thought the $10m per was a slap in the face and then he was convinced of it when Collins got his deal. Yet then FA happened and he realized the Pats were right about his market. Which obviously hurt his pride and his pride won't let him at this point accept that the Pats were right about his market because he still thinks he's worth more, hence why he is taking visits. Sorry but top FA aren't taking visits 8 days into FA, Dude just needs to accept that the Pats value him the most and their deal is probably gonna be the best deal he gets.

Pittsburgh just opened up a brinks truck for Brown.
I could see them giving him more to jinx us.

Hightower is -not- going to improve the Steelers D against the Patriots, why would they bother? They needed someone more like Jamie Collins athletically.

I think there is a better than 50/50
I'm at the point where I just don't care enough anymore to look for regular updates about Hightower. It's now in the "dog and pony show" stages. I f**kng hate dog and pony shows. No team is willing to give him what he thought he is worth. No team that actually called his agent were interested enough to even give him $10m. Pats clearly at this point offered him the highest deal and his ego is hurt because for 6 months he though the Pats undervalued him when they gave him the $10m per offer. Even the teams having him in think he'll end up re-signing, so ya of course they'll pitch with the off chance he actually decides to sign. But his ego is hurt and he's too prideful to at the point go back to the Pats and accept the deal, he is hoping some team offers him just a little more so he can take that back to the Pats. Like I said strap in because this isn't ending anytime soon, especially not in the next few days if he can't fly to Pittsburgh until Tuesday or Wednesday.
of course you made all of that up and have no way of knowing if any of it is factual.

Hope Hightower has a nice trip to Pittsburgh and hopefully we'll see him next fall.

To be fair, Vince Wilfork back in 2009-ish gauged interest from other teams, and took his time doing it, before coming back here.

Even Moss after 07 took a while to come back here.
Wilfork was not a FA in 2009

That would tie up like 40-something percent of their cap in 4 players.

Pitt is such an ehhh/junk of city from my experience...but that's me. (sorry if anyone is from pitt)

What you are saying is totally plausible.
Just like "Bridget pulled the goalie without telling Tom" also sounds like a true story.
Unfortunately, you, me, or Mort don't really have the inside knowledge as to what's going on.
Lastly, I've never been to a "dog and pony show"...but they can't be that bad or else they'd stop having them.

That's a load of speculative hooey.

He never said 10m was a slap in the face - you can't blame guys for wanting to play out a year to see if the cap goes up or if their market goes way up. The Pats supposedly told Butler they wouldn't go above 7m for a CB, but the market there has changed dramatically now.

Also, Hightower was named a Captain and given the Mayo/McGinnest locker, the one reserved for a team leader. Does that sound like a guy who thought the team slapped him in the face?

Due diligence isn't about pride. Have you ever been in a situation like this? You go to every meeting that's a possibility, even with someone you believe you wouldn't go near. Maybe you'll hear something in the meeting you can take back to your preferred employer - a clever twist on a guarantee, for example.

And yes, top FAs can be taking visits late into FA if THEY'RE not impatient. Every report says communications have remained open - BB obviously loves the guy and isn't pushing him.

I can wait for Christmas to open the presents.

Says the guy who was so sure there would be at least 5 teams willing to pay him 14-15m per.

How different could all of these offers be? Which ever one he takes he'll be taken care of for life so why try to collect every last nickel. I have no sympathy for him at this point.

Hightower is a winner. I think his conversations will go something like this.

H: What are you changing this year to neutralize tom Brady?

Steelers: there's this new wrinkle in zone...
Jets: maybe you'd tell us....

H: Bill, can you send someone to pick me up?

Yea thats the great unknown for me as well. We have no idea what the offers are, the bonus payout, the guaranteed money injured or otherwise, how he would be used in a particular defense, etc. It could also be he just wants to be super-duper diligent and take advantage of the VIP treatment he is getting.
