If Dennard had told the truth and plead guilty avoiding the drawn out trial wasting everyones time. Hes going to be inside of bars looking out for sure now.

By cooperating, he might have swung a deal so he wouldnt be convicted Felon as well. Now, he cant vote or own a gun.

Supposedly (I say this since I can't quickly find a link) the police refused to accept a plea deal.

The DA has the discretion whether to even pursue a case let alone abide by the sentencing wishes of the police. At the end of the day Dennard was his own worst enemy in taking the stand. He needed BB for a lawyer because like talking to the press nothing good can come out of being questioned on the stand by a DA.
