Alfonzo Dennard Trial

faces up to 6 years???

Wow, that is amazing. Hopefully he'll get some leniency as it was exactly a purposeful beatdown he gave the cop. And it was kind of a raucous situation, may not have known what was going on.

Hopefully not more than 6 months or so in jail.

Is that automatic, or is that up to the NFL to decide?

Technically, he wasn't an NFL employee when the crime was committed.

I might be jumping the gun, but I'm referring to him serving time for felony conviction, not what the league would do (since this happened before he was drafted).

For the lawyers here:

Can his atty bargain for little to no jail time?

They can ask. Not much to bargain with now though. IINAL though. Doesn't seem like he has any cards at all. He was foundd guilty.

What absolute BULL5HIT

Typical d1ckhead cop

I think if that was an option, they would have agreed to something before this case went to trial.

If the worst unfolds, which would you prefer?:

1.) Sign a mid-high level FA (asomugha, lewis) and spend a 1st round on a CB that will start day one.

2.) Sign a mid-high level FA and trust broken glass Dowling, saving draft capital but risky. Draft a 2nd-3rd round CB.

I don't want to spend another high pick on a CB......

EDIT: screw it, move McCourty to CB and hope for the best.

FWIW, the crimes for which he was convicted do not appear to carry a mandatory minimum penalty, so it's possible he gets a short jail sentence or even probation.

He has been charged with a felony. It's going to be a miracle if he escapes with just a hefty fine and probation.

I'm not really sure why the NFL would suspend him, in addition to whatever sentence the court hands down......

Because that's what Goodell does: impose arbitrary penalties on top of what the legal system hands out, for "embarrassing the league."

Me thinks Dennard will get 1 year in jail and he will serve 6 months getting out in October. Fine and probation.

He will get jail time for hitting a cop otherwise the whole trial was a farce and it sends the message that the law has no teeth.

He can try, but the time to bargain for no jail time is before the trial when each side doesn't know what the outcome will be. Now the prosecutor has all the chips and will feel pressure not to let the guy off easy after a jury was forced to sit through the trial, listen to the evidence, and render its verdict. Also, at this point no matter what the lawyers work out, it is only a recommendation to the Court and the judge can impose the sentence he/she believes is fair.

Denard or his lawyers really screwed up, or the prosecutor is a hard ass who didn't offer anything prior to trial, making them take their chances with the jury. Most of the time some kind of offer is made, particularly if you have conflicting reports from witnesses.

So did the jury trust the cop despite lack of any other evidence, or did they decide that accidentally jabbing the cop with an elbow is still assault?

Dennard himself admitted to resisting arrest and the elbow jab is in fact a battery. The jury did not buy the "it was an accident" defense.

Makes a lot of sense. Just curious, do you work in the legal field?

If Dennard had told the truth and plead guilty avoiding the drawn out trial wasting everyones time. Hes going to be inside of bars looking out for sure now.

By cooperating, he might have swung a deal so he wouldnt be convicted Felon as well. Now, he cant vote or own a gun.

Ex-Husker Dennard found guilty of assaulting officer : News-crime

Guilty on two counts - resisting arrest and assault on a police officer. No official word on this - but he'll most likely appeal before sentencing on April 11, 2013.

Just goes to show that it's never a good idea to be a famous football player in Lincoln, Nebraska and get into a fight with a police officer outside a bar the week before the NFL draft.

Reminds me of basketball player Marvin Barnes who robbed a bus with his high school letter jacket on with "Marvin" neatly embroidered on it. He was the most famous athlete in RI at the time. After he was was convicted, he was quoted in the Providence Journal saying, "It's always a disappointment to have to go to jail."

Truer words were never spoke.

Why would they buy all of Dennard's testimony and not the accident part? Actually more correctly why would they buy any of the POs' testimony since there seems to be nothing to corroborate it?

Unfortunately, LOL. I have been a lawyer since 1989. I stay away from criminal law as much as possible, however. I reside in the bankruptcy world where people just fight over money and nobody goes to jail (most of the time anyway).
