Patriots to Release Alfonzo Dennard

FWIW, a print article in the Globe sites "a league source" as saying that Dennard was high maintenance, there were ongoing concerns about his work ethic and commitment, and that he had skipped most of the offseason workout program.

While I hate anonymous sources, if Dennard missed the offseason workout program, he's a fool. He was already in the doghouse and due 1.5...

Talk about throwing money away.

No, they didn't. If anything, they mixed it up but they weren't NEARLY as zone-heavy back then as they were in 2010, 2011, and early 2012. If you want proof, go look at the Colts games of '03 and '04 and remember the complaints that their receivers were getting beat up in press. Most people are fine with mixing up the coverages, including me. But going zone-heavy as they did three and four years ago because of personnel deficiencies back there is not going to win you a championship. Belichick realized this. That's why he ultimately made the moves that he did last year and it resulted in him hoisting the Lombardi trophy again.

The moves he made last year certainly helped us bring home another Lombardi, especially when considering the insane schedule of top tier QBs snd receivers they were up against, but it wasn't the sole reason

In 2011, they were another flukey catch and/or a Welker drop away from a Lombardi, with their top weapon in Gronk on a gimpy leg at like 70% of his effectiveness.

They made it to 2 more consecutive afccg's as well, and in 2013 they were absolutely hammered with injuries to all of their top talent on the roster and still nearly made it a game against the Broncos.

Mayo, Wilfork, Tommy Kelly and Gronk were all done with season ending injuries after losing Welker in the offseason and hernandez to jail. Talib had his annual owwie booboo and left the game in the 2nd quarter, so the defense was depleted of all its elite talent, all its team captains and top contracts, and the offense was missing it's 2 biggest stars.

They've been real close 4 straight years in a row, so to think they're just going to fall to pieces because of 1 guy going to that nfl stink hole they call the Jets is not fair, IMO

It also didn't help having Eli being allowed to go 30-40 against that **** bag secondary and having the Giants control T.O.P. The only reason they were in that game is because Brady set the record at the time for consecutive completions. In the end, the defense did in that game what the defense did so often when they were relying heavily on the zone back then - gave up the game.

It's important to note that McCourty moved back to safety and the Talib trade happened midway through 2012, which allowed them to play man again to go along with some zone.

Not just Revis but Browner as well and now Dennard. I think coaching and possibly an improved pass rush will help that back end but, from a personnel standpoint, this is one of the worst secondaries in the NFL as of May 6. That's why a lot of people think that a trade will happen.

Who? Why, did he play for the Patriots? ;)

Yeah, if they're not leaving it on the field, who cares? The team can do much better.
