Alex Barth's post-OTAs "way too early" roster projection

Hollins is a culture guy, locker room guy, leader. He's not here to be a primary play maker. I can see him in a Chris hogan type role, red zone, running plays. Something like that. The chain movers are pop, Diggs, Henry at receiver.
???
We should take a poll to see how many of us expect Douglas to be more of a playmaker/chain-mover than Williams.

?????.. Douglas is a slot, Williams is an outside the numbers guy. Let's not forget Williams Is a rookie while I expect him to be good.. he's still a rookie. Pop will see the most targets by the nature of his position in the slot.

I expect/hope Williams will be our top downfield threat from Day One.

I expect DIGGS to play a lot in the slot.

The OPEN question is who is the best #3 for Josh's Offense. Your position and assumption is that Douglas is that person. Some think that Chism is right #3.

For me the best #3 is either Hollins or Bourne. I like BOTH better than Douglas as the 3rd on the field with Diggs and Williams.

Diggs plays all over the formation. He lines up everywhere. He did that in Minnesota, Buffalo and Houston. Pop is the slot guy and will see the most targets in this offense from the slot. Pop, Williams, Diggs, will be the primary pass catchers. Sprinkle in Bourne, Boutte and chism as well.

I don’t think Bourne.

He’s not going to be happy being the 5th option.

Thinking Pittsburgh for a 6th

5 WRs 4 tight ends

Both Lampe, and Bell can play some FB as well.
Mapu is too talented not to make this roster.

5 WRs
Diggs
Williams
Douglas
Boutee
Chism

Baker Ps
Polk PUP
Bourne traded.

I think Hollins sticks and Bell is released. They already have 3 RB’s they can throw to regularly, as well as 2 TE’s who can catch the ball, Bell really doesn’t add anything, as Lampe is a great blocker who can catch the ball, and Bell is a poor blocker.

Interesting. We got a 6th for Joe Milton I'd say at 5th at least. Alot of this depends on if Diggs will start the season on PUP or not.

Same projection i have.. however I have KB staying you have him traded.

I don’t think Diggs is a true slot receiver, and he will be used much the same way as Miami uses Hill. He will line up inside at times, thus the sllot designation, but won’t be used the way NE has used Welker and Edelman as slot receivers.

Here it is... I took the liberty of moving guys just a little.

QB (2) Drake Maye, Joshua Dobbs
RB (4) TreVeyon Henderson, Rhamondre Stevenson, Antonio Gibson, Lan Larison
TE (3) Hunter Henry, Austin Hooper, Brock Lampe
WR (7) Stefon Diggs, Kyle Williams, Demario Douglas, Mack Hollins, Efton Chism III, Kayshon Boutte, Kendrick Bourne
C (2) Garrett Bradbury, Jared Wilson
G (4) Mike Onwenu, Cole Strange, Sidy Sow, Jack Conley
T (3) Will Campbell, Morgan Moses, Caedan Wallace
DE (3) Milton Williams, Joshua Farmer, Jeremiah Pharms Jr.
DT (2) Christian Barmore, Khyiris Tonga
ILB (4) Jahlani Tavai, Christian Elliss, Jack Gibbens, Robert Spillane
OLB (5) Harold Landry, Keion White, K’Lavon Chaisson, Bradyn Swinson, Anfernee Jennings
CB (6) Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis, Marcus Jones, Alex Austin, Marcellas Dial Jr., Isaiah Bolden
SS (2) Kyle Dugger, Craig Woodson
FS (2) Jabrill Peppers, Jaylinn Hawkins
ST (4) Bryce Baringer, Julian Ashby, Andres Borregales, Brenden Schooler

Things that stick out...

Mapu and Ponder weren't even on the bubble for him. Ponder didn't even get a mention. Ponder as a speedy guy you'd think would show up in OTAs, but i haven't heard his named called much.

Dipree not being on the roster right now is understandable. If he makes it he makes it as a blocker, and he hasn't gotten the chance to show a thing yet. But if we cut him and someone scoops him up... I won't be too upset. I'd like to keep him here. But his ceiling is a very good blocking TE who can catch just a little. You could get about the same from a backup OT. Not trying to take the piss out of him, but he guys like that aren't overly hard to find.

Again his obsession with Bourne annoys me. I just hate his contract so much on principle. And i just don't see how he is every worth that contract, particularly compared to the very cheap Boutte. Polk needs to play to make the team. It's that simple.

At Safety Epps is a guy i had some hopes for... i hope he can get healthy in training camp. If not, i like our depth anyway. But i thought it was a potentially sneaky good signing if he comes back from his injury well.

As for the OL... it's still way too early, but you need to put someone on the roster for now. Take it with a grain of salt. But i don't mind carrying only 9 or even only 8. Does anyone really think we can't stash Sow or Conley? Just food for thought.
Thank you thank you thank you. I hate that borne contract just as much as you do. He showed me zero leadership last year. If you can't be on the field help your teammates. That was what Bourne was advertised as; a jovial good teammate who was never gonna light the nfl world on fire.

That 2nd contract was malfeasance. Mapu can follow him on the way out. I'm not convinced about our linebackers at all either

no one we have will be Edelman or Welker

That doesn’t answer the question. How can you say they will be worse playing someone you have never seen play?

I realize the bar was set so high last season that it would be foolhardy to think they could surpass it with this years team. But your comment is akin to me saying “ Cooper Flagg sucks.” Ok, I have never actually seen him play, but he’s a big white guy from Maine, no way he can be a good NBA player.

Julian Edelman couldn’t even be Edelman, he’s a 7th round QB from a small school, no way he can replace Welker.

And you know this how?

Wes Welker was a UDFA, and Edelman a QB drafted in the 7th round QB who took several years to develop. EftonChism broke all of Cooper Kupp’s college records, and the Patriots had to win a bidding war, and give him a $350,000 and a 3 year deal to get him.

Per the CBA all UDFA rookies get 3-year deals. Also, so far, they've only paid him $25K in signing bonus. They also guaranteed his rookie PS salary, but any salary he earns this year from any team counts against that figure.

Efton Chism signed a three-year rookie deal with the New England Patriots that includes $234,000 in guaranteed base salary and a $25,000 signing bonus. This makes his deal the richest among the Patriots' undrafted rookies and includes more guaranteed money than their seventh-round draft picks, according to Yahoo Sports

I was off on the numbers, this is the actual deal.

It isn't a matter of who sucks. It is a matter of making a decision on who is likely to succeed. Which four wide receivers, plus a 5th backup are more likely to succeed.

Vrabel will make that decision and those WR's will be active for Game One (if healthy).

As I had at least a dozen times, I support keeping a developmental WR who would not be expected to be active at all this season absent a couple of injuries.

The roster SHOULD have a couple of those players. To me, the decision for the 6th WR roster spot doesn't affect the need to have our best WR's be our active 4 on the roster. And yes, we need a backup #5 who COULD be Chism if he were to beat out the rest.
============
BTW, is NOT all clear that Vrabel is willing to keep a WR who would take several years to develop into a contributing player for us.

I submit that this happens very little in today's game. If a player is lucky enough to still be in the leagues when he develops after 3 or 4 years, that it is more likely to be playing for a team other than the one that drafted him.

It’s also a matter of who can contribute on special teams, which Chism excels at, and Douglas has shown some ability to do. Hollins is a good special teams player. Boutte, Polk, and Baker provide nothing in that regard, neither does Diggs. I don’t know if Williams can play ST’s.

There are reports he and Dippre got basically the same deal (Dippre may have gotten $5K more than Chism).
