CHAD BETTER THAN BRETT ON THE LONG BALL?
Posted by Mike Florio on August 9, 2008, 11:44 p.m. EDT

On Saturday, Jets quarterback Brett Favre addressed the perception that his predecessor, Chad Pennington, has an arm like a limp, um, noodle.

“I think every time I’ve faced Chad, I’ve lost,” Favre said. “He’s played extremely well. . . . In Green Bay a couple of years ago, he played outstanding. I have nothing but the highest regard for Chad. [He is an] extremely bright guy. The knock on him was his arm wasn’t that strong. So what? I can throw it through a wall, but I don’t win every game I play in. It doesn’t matter. He’s very effective.”

His Lordship's humility is an endearing feature which we all readily cheer whilst lined up 20 deep along the procession route.

Wow... Brett Favre can throw a ball through a wall? Geez, I wonder if Brady can do that. I'm not so sure I like our chances now. Perhaps we'd be better of staying home that week. [/sarcasm]

seriously though, anybody with any sort of knowledge will realize no good will come from insulting a divisional QB. Regardless of how linguini-esq his arm is.

example # 125 why PFT is a joke website and proves Florio is anti Jet. Who would actually write an article on why Pennington compares to anyone on deep balls. If I use the right stats I can make a case for Pennington being an all time great QB b/c of his QB Rating.

funny he has time to comment on chad. shouldn't he be learning the playbook and making up for lost time like several months?

I could throw a ball through certain types of walls. Paper walls. Styrofoam walls. Lego walls. Chad might be able to also.

Your insane optimism is infectious! Hello? CDC? We've got a problem! :singing:

I may be insane and I may be an optimist and I may be infectious, but... never mind, you're right.

I don't think Florio hates the Jets, or any one team. He flip flops on viewpoints in order to generate debate - and page views - on every topic and every team. His agenda is strictly business, not anti-Jets.

By naming his column "the rumor mill" at least he's being upfront and letting us know we should expect speculation rather than fact. It's a lot more honest approach than much of the 'reporting' done by espn.

He should be concentrating on practice. Supposedly he's been stinking the joint up.

Don't cry, your keyboad might short out.

Save your crying for the season.

Or better yet: Why not wait until you see how Favre performs before you embarrass yourself further....oh, that's right, I forgot. Like all the Dolphin Dopes who wet their pants over Culpepper, you run your yap now over your savior, and disappear when the season starts.

Do you know how many preceeded you on the path you are on? How many fans of how many teams have had interchangeable posts? It seems new to you, but it is a broken record to us.

From Florio's post...
>>>Due in part to the fact that Favre has played in 64 games as opposed to 40 from Pennington, Favre has 290 attempts of more than 20 yards, and Pennington has only 108. But Pennington has thrown only four interceptions on 20-plus-yard attempts. Favre has chucked 35.>>>>

Pennington Int on long ball 4/108 3.7%
Favre int on long ball 35/290 12.1%
Explain to me again who can't throw the long ball or who shouldn't 'throw it up' there?????

It's a bit of a sham stat, though.

Misleading stat, no doubt. Doesn't a "long ball" include, say, a 15 yard pass that the WR picks up an additional 10 yards on? A Brett Favre "long ball" is typically a 50 yard bomb downfield. These types of passes are prone to being intercepted, but also often end in touchdowns.

In Pennington's defense, the Jets have made the playoffs in all 3 of his healthy seasons. And while I undervalue the QB rating stat, he has played with average at best skill position players. Of course, that isn't improving in Miami.

With Favre and Penny in the AFCE, the Visitor's Forum is gonna be fun.

How 'bout we un-ban AQUA4EVAH to maximize our entertainment?

yeah but 12% ( one of every 8 long throws) ending in an interception is a mad bomber stat. Chad may not be able to throw the long one but he's getting picked less often.
Also I'm not so sure that CHFF looked at 20+ yd completions but attempts over 20 yds which wouldn't include YAC.....I'd have to go back and check it...

Who is crying? You guys are the same guys who call out ESPN and half the media for being anti Patriot every day. read Florio's past articles, this is the same man who said Gholston's 5 for 35 rookie deal was ruining the NFL rookie contracts. This in the same draft as McFadden getting 7 for 70 and Ryan getting 12 plus mil per.

You are assuming I think favre makes us a SB contender, I think we have wild card potential. And to be honest Culpepper had 10 x more ?'s then Favre. The man had never suceeded w/o an elite WR and was coming off of major knee surgery.

Really, you mean only after a couple days on the field with a new team he's not carving them up?

If he was the God and the Legend that everyone makes him out to be, he should at least be hitting his receivers half the time. I took that quote from Si's Rumor Mill section, though, so take it for what it's worth.
