Valentine is one of the few guys the Patriots have that can either line up at the 0 or 1-tech and generate push in the pocket. If he stays healthy, he’s certainly and addition to a defense that had absolutely nobody who could do that in 2017. I have higher hopes for him there than I do Shelton.

Danny Shelton is going to make a huge difference. Weird how he came from the same draft as Malcolm Brown.

I meant Valentine as a reserve/rotational NT behind Shelton. He seemed pretty okay in that role as a rookie in 2016, backing up Branch. I think he'd have been more useful last year than the semi-retired, 2017 version of Branch.

At Texas, he was a large, strong, "athletic for his size", run-stopper who was very solid and consistent, but who didn't generate a ton of pressure. IOW, exactly what he's been for the Pats.

I'm not really sure where any higher expectations came from.

The first rule of the draft is, if there's a prospect who perfectly fits the job you have open, you take him when you have to, based on how much other teams are interested in him. You don't wait.

I had a 25lb female Calico named Ballerina (long story) who stared down a fox that was stalking her. After the fox suddenly remembered it had another engagement, Ballerina calmly sauntered past me and gave me a look that was the feline equivalent of, "... 'sup, bro?"
