That's a huge loss for the 49ers. They're going to be praying that Patton has a OROY type year because, outside of Crabtree, the 49ers are missing a WR1 type.

Obviously his loss will be huge for them.

Not a huge concern for the 49ers. Crabtree will follow the Suggs Rehab route and be back by week 6.

The team is reporting that he has already had the surgery and will miss approximately 6 months, so that'd put him in line to come back in November sometime--or at least for the last month or so + the playoffs.

It will still be a big blow to them as Kaepernick had developed a nice rapport with Crabtree last season. They'll have to wait until at least week 11-12 or so to get him back, and that's if their 6 month projections are correct.

As a QB, it seems like Kaepernick rarely looks past his first target, and in most cases last year that was Crabtree. Hence Crabtree getting a bunch of yards--check out his stats in games that Kaepernick started then pro-rate that over a full season--but no other receivers coming near his production.

Based on that, I think this will hurt the 49ers quite a bit. He's clearly Kaepernick's #1 target, and I already thought that he was prime for regression now that other teams have some real film on him and will recognize/exploit this flaw in his game. The fact that he no longer has the one receiver that he developed a real rapport with will most likely exacerbate this issue in the short term.

In the long term, though, it may force Kaepernick to develop into a better quarterback.

Yeah, definitely an enormous blow to their passing attack.

Crabtree finally realized his potential by reading from the same page with Kaepernick. This is as big as the loss of Rob Gronkowski was for the Patriots in 2012.

This is sort of a bummer -- I was looking forward to seeing what that team would be like next year and he's a great player.

Usually, I view all this stuff through the "what does this mean for the Patriots" lens, and while I don't really root for injury for opponents, I can't always say I'm broken up about it when it happens to rivals. But the only way the 49ers really matter to the Patriots this year would be in the last game of the year, and if the Patriots get there they have to play someone good. So, this one is just sort of one you feel bad about.

Who expected AJ Jenkins to contribute? Even if he does, losing Crabtree is a huge blow. Might have just shifted the balance of power toward the Seahawks.

edit: people are clearly forgetting that the San Francisco 49ers are not the New England Patriots. This is a team that was a handful of bad plays from making the superbowl 2 years ago with little contributions from anybody on that offense outside of Vernon Davis and Frank Gore. The secondary fell apart towards the end of last year but the front 7 is the best in football. They will still win games with defense, running the football and a few big plays from Kaep. Still a 12-4 team without YACtree.

The "awsum" 49rers just suffered ONE more season ending injury to a starter then they did all last season.

Payback is a *****, but you can't always beat the injury odds. Every team averages the same number over time.

Jenkins didn't catch a SINGLE pass his rookie campaign. It's possible he'll surprise but the logical expectation is he's on the Rashaun Woods Express train to bust town.

He played 3 games and started none of them....He was a rookie who didn't beat out Randy Moss, Crabtree, or Manningham on a team that started the year not planning on slinging the ball around. He was considered a pretty big reach and somewhat of a project for a reason, he wasn't an NFL ready receiver.

They signed Manningham and Moss even before the kid was drafted. They were more than ready for those two to see playing time over anybody they drafted. He wasn't ready to contribute on a consistent basis therefore San Fran went with the veteren receivers over the high upside player.

Similarly, this year San Fran took Tank Carradine in the second round. He's a player that for different reasons, won't be ready to start day one even if he's completely healthy. He may not see much pt at all this season but even if he was completely healthy, he would not be beating out Justin Smith or Ray Mcdonald. San Francisco knows this and they understand that at beast, Carradine will possibly contribute as a starter next year.

big loss but they have AJ jenkins who was expected to contribute this year along with anquan boldin. If they can both step up and Vernon Davis produces, their offense will be on track again.

Oh Christ, I'd forgotten all about The 49ers getting Boldin. Man, that's just stupid, as in "man, that's just stupid awesome" typa way. Like that receiver core (like that one, Tunes? tehee) wasn't stoked stocked enuff.
