3, 1st round picks in 2010 possible?

They can use all the first rounders they can get next year with the amount of FAs leaving the team.

Who says anybody is leaving? You can bet everybody gets re-signed if next year is uncapped.

Its called getting the best value out of a selection. If you can trade a third rounder for a second rounder the following year, and you're not zeroing in on a player that actually has a second round grade, why wouldn't you make that deal?

Like really. Scared? Do you want Belichick to make a pick that doesn't work just because he feels he needs to make a pick eventually?

While it might be irritating for a fan to watch draft picks traded into the next year, it is simply genius, IMO.

What's your line of thinking?

Trading a 3rd rounder for a future second rounder is fine. However, I'm talking about a first rounder for a future 1st rounder. My line of thinking is the lack of depth that has killed the Pats for the last four years.

Agreed. Stockpiling picks is not building your team today. Those picks take three years. Pick this year and they are ready in two.

I don't know if being "scared" is part of the equation for BB, but I do agree that you need to use your picks at some point. Always banking picks for the next season doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

How would everybody feel about swinging trades with 2 teams and trading 2 of our #2's for 2 #1's next year?

It's possible, judging by all the first round value in the 20's to 40's this year.

We keep 23 & 34 and roll 47 and 58 + 89 (or what have you) into 1st rounders next year. This would still leave us with at least 1 pick in every round except the 5th. (ours was traded for Lewis... but who knows, the 58+89 could include us getting a 5th back this year)

Imagine 3 first round pick in 2010?!?!?!?
That could be worked so many ways to keep us loaded for many years of drafts.
At the very least it would cause the patsfans.com servers to melt several times leading up to the '10 draft..lol.

I would be extremely happy. I really want Mount Cody and McClain, both from Alabama and we may need a ton of ammunition to pull it off.

I have to admit, I've thought about this scenario as well. Part of me geeks out over the idea, but then I realize it's simply not a good way to build the team--sure, the picks themselves represent value, but only if you isolate them from the team-building process. BB has said repeated times that he uses free agency and the draft as ways to improve the team, and nothing else. It's not just getting good value (though we do that), but it's ensuring that we have the best possible chance of winning.

Trading two premium picks out of a deep, rich draft when we have several areas in need of upgrades is not a good way to build a team, in my opinion. It's not responsible.

That said, I want Brandon Spikes and Eric Berry next year (assuming Berry comes out). So badly, in fact, that I'd trade whatever we had to in order to draft them. In my opinion Spikes is one of the best and most complete LBs to come out in ages; he and Mayo would be all pros for the next decade. Berry has the potential to be better than Ed Reed. Watch his college games, and you'll see how massively talented he is in only his second year. He owns the single season record for most return yards off interceptions, averaging nearly 40 yards per pick. Phenomenal. Team him with Meriweather, who seems to be improving, and I think we'd have one of the finest safety tandems in the league.

So, to sum up: trading one pick, such as 58 (most likely bundled with a couple later picks) into next year is a good idea in my mind, but that's still only with the hope that we can maybe pick up the players we want if perhaps they're available and they just happen to fall to us, etc, etc, etc. The far smarter and more successful team-building approach is targeting players who upgrade our roster and give us the best chance to win in '09 and beyond. Lately we've managed the draft well, but haven't picked up great young talent. I wish we do a little less managing and a little more drafting wisely.

An interesting thing I just thought of might put a damper on this idea.

Say we traded #47 for a 1st rounder in 010 to the Raiders
AND
We traded #58 for a 1st Rounder in 010 to the Lions


WHAT IF we ended up with the 1st AND 2nd overall picks in the draft (or 2 very high picks). While in Madden Football 2009 this would be ok, in reality, this could really harm the team. Obviously we would try to trade out of these positions, but as we have seen that may not be possible due to the rookie pay schedule. We would have 2 very high priced youngsters on our team, and with the salary cap, could be devastating

So, I think this is something you have to consider as well

Faulk, Kaczur, Mankins, Neal, Galloway, Thomas, Watson, Bodden,
Hobbs, Bruschi, Woods, Green, Seymour, L. Smith, Wilfork, Hanson,
and Gostowski.

This is a draft year that is supposed to have depth up thru the third
round. I would prefer to have the Pats draft as many good players as
they can this year so they have a year's experience under their belt.
I think that this is preferable to having to start several rookies next
year.

With respect to you Jimke, it won't be as bad actually as it looks. It is very intimidating when you first look at it, but when you break it down a little, etc, it's not as bad. (someone can do this way better, I'm just going off of the top of my head, too lazy to look stuff up, it's late)

Some will indeed be re-signed: Most likely Wilfork, Mankins/or Seymour, Woods ?

Some will be RFA's due to no salary cap, meaning we'll either keep them, or receive a 1st and a 3rd for compenstation : Hobbs, and Gostkowski, I know there's more (gotta be Thomas too)

Some will have moved on, maybe cut, traded or retired: Bruschi, Galloway, possibly Bodden, possibly Green, ??? Hanson ???, LeKevin Smith

That really narrows the list down to : Faulk, Kaczur, Watson, Neal--(and one or more are probably RFA's that I'm too lazy to look up)

The point is that we should be able to sign more than usual due to the probability of no salary cap, plus the RFA's. When you consider 1 or 2 may not even work out next yr, or make the team, the list that we have to worry about grows much smaller. I agree that it needs addressed, and that this yr's draft is a great opportunity to do this, I'm just simply pointing out that the list won't be as bad, when all is said and done
