Biggest takeaway - Haack is a better punter than Baringer.
I hope they make the smart decision here and keep Haack for the season. He had 2 punts in his first game with the Pats that were better than any punt Baringer has ever made.
Punting (and Kicking) is one area of a preseason game that can be evaluated without caveat. We found a Punter!

* RB Kenneth Walker III → Chiefs — the biggest loss.
* S Coby Bryant → Bears — Super Bowl starter.
* EDGE Boye Mafe → Bengals — significant member of the defensive rotation.
* CB Riq Woolen → Eagles — major secondary contributor.
* WR/ST Dareke Young → Raiders — primarily a special-teams loss.
* WR Jake Bobo is still a Seahawk but is now out for the 2026 season with a knee injury.

Biggest loss might be Klint Kibiak as OC.

I'd be surprised if they already pegged Miller for RB3. He's not bad, but doesn't have the pop than Lan has. Miller is the safe choice, but not very exciting. And Lan is the better KR and receiving threat. We'll see.
I also like Haskins as a short yardage bull - he's far better than any of our backs inside.

Williams showed why we kept him and let Boutte go. Williams developed a few yards of separation on that catch. Boutte probably would have made the catch but with the defender draped on him. and probably would have been stopped short of the goal line as his YAC has never been good.

And yes, it was an ugly game - I think we can all agree that if all our starters are unable to play, and we have all backups in their place, we're not going to win.

Of course, we can say the same thing about every team.

These preseason games and scrimmages have all become about testing out your potential backups and PS players. Like other teams who haven't had their starters on the field together, September is going to likely have some ugly preseason-esque football. Maybe you win some, maybe you lose them all - but as long as you make the playoffs, all that matters is that your team is healthy and peaking in January.

Yes, we've heard other posters say that there's not a recent history of the Pats signing guys cut from other teams but I do think we'll see some pickups this year.

Personally I think we can pass on TE as we still have receivers like Mack that we want to get on the field and he's a better blocker and receiver than most of the TEs we'd sign.

I'd highlight signing more on the D side if it were me making the decisions and one can never have enough OL on the PS as well.

Look for some of those moves to come after Week 1 when contracts are no longer guaranteed for the full season. The priority for cut week will be to keep who we think might be snatched up by others, cut the guys we think can pass through to the PS and see what we might be able to gain for veteran depth elsewhere.

Best news of the night IMO if Crownover is turning the corner.

No knock on Campbell but Crownover has got more than 2 inches more reach than our starting LT

If Lomu isn't able to make the transition to RT it looks like Crownover has great potential and the fact that he can be depth at LT is gravy.

WR Kyle Williams looks well on his way to making that vaunted Year 2 jump. A situation that have been fleeting for this Origination compared to other Teams. His speed should open up a lot of things underneath the Safeties are put on notice; good luck Defense singling him up one on one.

I think this again comes down to who you can get on the PS - Larison does too much to risk as a cut. He's a RB who looks like a more than decent pass catcher. If Stevenson is unable to play he can step into that role of a receiving RB.

Other teams are hurting at WR and would I think jump to pick up Lan. I like Miller but I think he can make it through to PS.

The hope is that the backups develop and get better as the season goes on.

Health is a factor for every team in every year, but more so with the Pats this year because the dropoff looks significant (besides WR).

I’ll start to be exited when he does it consistently against NFL players.

He did have 3 TDs on 10 catches last year. I am not saying that he doesn't have a lot to develop because he does. But he has shown he can score TDs against starters too.

And someone had to play WR in these games. You are not playing the starters (Brown, Doubs, and Pop). You probably don't want to play Hollins because of his age and you don't want him to get injured. That leaves Williams, Chism, and a bunch of guys who have no chance to make the 53 man roster to play in these games.

You get a free game day roster spot by carrying 3 QBs. Is someone better than Morton going to be available at cutdown? If not, then I’d be surprised if he doesn’t make it as the emergency QB.

FWIW, I don’t see the emergency QB rule as a free roster spot. He can only enter if QB1& 2 are both unable to play due to injury or ejection and he isn’t allowed to play any other position, so there’s no real impact on the 45. I believe that the majority of teams carried only 2 QBs last season.

The doom and gloom is hilarious

38 guys didn't dress, then you had Kyle Williams, Jacas, Lomu and Boregales getting some snaps. That's 42. There was an only 11 guys out there making the team not to mention Landry and Schooler. So really 9 guys out there

But of course people gotta act like it was the starters in there

As far as I can tell, the only guys who played last night who have any chance of making the roster are below:

- RB Larison
- TE Arkin
- S Pettus
- DT Taylor
- DT Farmer
- DE Jacas

More than a few series:
- QB Morton
- OT Lomu
- OT Crownover
- CB Vildor

- DE Swinson
- LB Britt

None of that second group are likely to see the field at all even if they make the roster for more than limited snaps unless there are injuries.
