PostGame Thread 2026 Official Postgame Thread: Patriots close out preseason w/37-13 loss to the Browns

Immediate Postgame Reactions
I just hope that our primary starters stay healthy because as a lot of you have mentioned and obviously Vrabel stated (shockingly at the time) there isn’t a lot of depth behind the starters. We really saw that last night. I do wonder if some of the guys that were playing out there were pissed off because they had to play and they felt that they had a roster spot locked up and other guys got to sit that are also neck and neck with them… So maybe they put in a half assed effort I don’t know. Still not sure what is going to happen with RB3… Jam Miller made it more difficult last night because he was injured and didn’t play……. But hasty and Haskins are what they are, which is pretty average running back material although Haskins really lowered the shoulder a lot last night and made a great play on special teams. Larison had the spotlight directly on him and could’ve really separated himself and didn’t do it last night… So we’ll have to see what the coaching staff decides. I’m not overly optimistic against Seattle who I don’t think I’ve had much changes to their roster with the exception of Walker, since the Super Bowl. Hopefully we can give them a game.

It' more than you think.

* RB Kenneth Walker III → Chiefs — the biggest loss.
* S Coby Bryant → Bears — Super Bowl starter.
* EDGE Boye Mafe → Bengals — significant member of the defensive rotation.
* CB Riq Woolen → Eagles — major secondary contributor.
* WR/ST Dareke Young → Raiders — primarily a special-teams loss.
* WR Jake Bobo is still a Seahawk but is now out for the 2026 season with a knee injury.

Morton needs to be on the PS at best. Not a good performance last night.

I expect the initial cutdown will have some odd proportions. E.g. I haven’t seen anything to suggest that Dippre & Tanner will be snapped up elsewhere, so let’s say 2 TEs to make room for Crownover.

We have very different views of the patriot Defense in the first quarter.

I thought that they had a poor performance.

For me, they are who I thought they were. There are a few of us who keep contending our CBs are very weak after the starters, and then some fools just want to trade Gonzo and go with the next man up because he is not that good. I hope this game lit a fire under Elliot to get Gonzo signed.

Crownover was a standout last week on tape. Quick lateral movement is probably his weak point, but he was impressive, was better than Lomu in game 2 though you can see with development that Lomu just has more natural talent. Crownover can run, gets downfield quick, big guy that doesn't budge once he gets his hands on you. Twitchy quick guys will be where he might have some issues but will be interesting to see his tape from yesterday.
Offensive Tacke is looking like one of our Strongest posiitions very deep. Three Solid guys for the Future: now if we can get some of our weaker positions on par.

I agree but Williams is toasting the backups and looks like he doesn't belong on the same field. Chism was out there too and was not noticed.

He will be doing something similar in games. If Brown and Doubs are on the field, who is Williams lining up against?

The sky is falling, the sky is falling.

Really?? Homer Patsfans who overrate their own says hold our Beers.

That game was such a grinding bore that I'd rather listen to Rob Bradford for three hours than rewatch it. That's how bad it was.

I can’t imagine it’s Wolf that’s holding this up.
With the size of the contract being discussed, I would think Kraft has a major say.
Could be wrong, maybe Kraft has a blank cheque and its Elliott causing delay, but that seems unlikely.

There were a lot of rumors last night and a few sources close to Gonzo, like his trainer that Shefter tweeted then deleted, that said some stuff. Once think posted was that the contract is there, but there are some really weird options to it that others don't have. I suspect Wolf has a theory on how to mitigate the cap hit and he is doing something weird to try it. Gonzo's agent won't bite and Wolf has not buckled.

LB issues resolved?

I feel really dumb for missing his play last night. I guess I let it get lost in the poor performance by the other guys vying for a roster spot. But that play is exactly how you get noticed by the coaching staff. He was the opposite of everyone else last night. Doing a good job with his play as a tackle last night and the game before, and then showing effort like this? I mean, not only was it just a nasty block, but he then didn’t stop and went on to assist on the tackle. That’s the kind of passion any coach wants to see. He’s making the team.

Pretty ugly. But, Gabriel is a starter in this league, playing into the 3rd qtr. We played the very bottom of our roster.
So it's hard to judge guys fully especially without any real game plan. But, it wasn't good, that's for sure. The DL & OL were bad.
A lot of hard decisions to come for cutdown. A few interesting position battles for 1 last spot:

Larison / Miller / Haskins. (I still think Larison - for versatility & KR. The other 2 can go on PS)
Rizy / Butler / Conley. (I think Rizy holds the upper hand - until Brown returns)
Woods / Minor / Dial. (Total toss up - I was shocked to see Woods playing at the end)
Obiazor / Jacobs / Muma. (Muma has turned into mush. Obiazor just because of draft position)

Took a look at some rookies and bubble players in the all-22, at least the ones I cared about. Of course, they are playing mainly against guys going to get cut so all with a grain of salt.

-Crownover: As mentioned he looks the part. Arm length is obvious, size is great. If he was younger, I could see him developing into a starter, as an older rookie I think swing tackle is more likely but tackles is a position that players develop later so you never know. Sometimes gets too high in stance. Holding call was bull crap call on him. Should have been hands to face by defender, actually 3 different times that should have been called.

-Namdi Obiazor: The rookie winner of the game. Again, an older prospect at 24. Led team in tackles, had 1 chance at another that he didn't make but not really a missed tackle due to the angle. Overall, he took good angles, got off blocks, wrapped up well. Occasionally could have been better diagnosing. Was very impressive in coverage for a LB tho limited plays and against backups. Clearly best player on the defense last night IMO.

-Gabe Jacas: Did not do much but was his best game, that's how underwhelming he's been. Limited snaps and limited opportunities to do much but looked more comfortable, showed a little more quickness and just seemed to react quicker. Did allow QB around the edge again on 1 play tho questionable if it was really his responsibility there. Missing all that time in the off season shows, slight uptick though so maybe by game 5 he'll contribute?

-Kindle Vildor: Limited snaps, played much less than Woods or Prunty seems to indicate he made the team? Got completely turned around going the wrong way on one play and had the DPI, otherwise was fine. Patriots played a ton of zone in this game, harder to judge CB's. 2 very bad plays stand out though.

-Charles Woods: On the bubble and clearly passed by Vildor. He wasn't good in limited snaps last year and not been good in pre season games.

-Karon Prunty: Got beat twice on similar plays, down the fields stutter step, jam, in-cut. The TD was worse because there was never contact, on the first one there was at least some contact by WR before he made the cut. Again played a lot of zone, had one mixup in zone coverage, I think he properly switched and the other cb did not but hard to tell, either way left guy wide open. I like Prunty, he's a keeper IMO. Like him better than Vildor or Woods. Just a question if Pats keep Woods, if they do Vildor or Prunty are going to be practice squad. I am personally not seeing why Woods deserves it over Prunty and Vildor, at least those two are raw and have potential.

-Lomu: Only 9 offensive snaps but looked good. His athleticism jumps out. While Crownover was more impressive last week overall, his lack of quickness will keep him from reaching the potential of someone like Lomu. This season will be Lomu at swing tackle and RT when Moses needs a spell. If Campbell struggles, he will eventually move to guard and Lomu to LT, though Lomu really needs a full off season to do that I think. Otherwise, next season he becomes the RT starter. He has impressive athletic skills that you don't see with most tackles. IF Campbell can do the LT job, Pats are set up well with some young tackles.

I see only Two QB's the obvious so; there's no reason to carry Morton on the 53 at this time.
You get a free game day roster spot by carrying 3 QBs. Is someone better than Morton going to be available at cutdown? If not, then I’d be surprised if he doesn’t make it as the emergency QB.

Morton looked horrible as a snap-shot. But, look what he had to work with. No run game, all new guys at IOL. But, he could manage a game and dink & dunk an offense with a starting cast. I think they'd be safe stashing him on PS.

Rarely do you see a guy take out the blocker, turn around, and then also tackle the ball carrier. And he's an offensive player. That's kinda impressive, even against the level of competition. Crownover showed pretty well last night, and in the prior game as well.

There weren't many that played like they had something to lose. He earned it with hustle and physicality. Kept playing to the whistle.
