What was interesting to me was the post game press conference. At the podium, Joe Milton just has an aura of a stud. He's very calm, well spoken, intelligent and extremely likable. He talked about his ability to stay calm on the field and not panic.

When Maye took the podium he spoke like a nervous teenager who just wasn't comfortable with lots of "yeahs" and nothing but cliche. The contrast in the two was striking.
Before the draft, I had watched a couple of their post game college press conferences after some of their biggest losses, and that's what they've been. Milton (got his Michigan degree in 3 years) was actually criticized for seeming aloof and uncompetitive (which I thought for a while), but the dude just turns the page quickly.

With Maye, he's still quite young, but he never got anywhere close to full brooding teen like McCarthy or Caleb.

Maye looks nervous here... what I would expect from a 21 year old kid facing the NFL media for the first time in a postgame presser.

The Saints are raving about Rattler who they got for nothing on Day 3 like we did Milton things that make you go Hmmmmmm.

Nice observations Milton have No Pressure on him ZERO! He can just sit and work on the little things he has the tools.

I hoped he was a little further along would hate if he had to sit the year.

Well,
1) Playing Maye that little was just plain stupid. Probably our number one priority this year us to get Maye ready for next year. This was a wasted opportunity. It was slippery? Wear cleats. The O-line is iffy? Work around it by scheme/play choice. Ridiculous. Another dumbo decision by Mayo, or whoever he's laying off his decisions to these days, imho. (Too d---d much Oprah-style "collaboration" RUN the d---d team, will ya?)

2) If I subtract all the expected caveats - lousy team, playing against future car wash attendants, just a preseason scrimmage, and so on - I'm still left thinking that Milton was genuinely impressive. When he ran around, he did keep his eyes down the field, I thought his decision as to when to run were absolutely sound, it looked like he ran the huddle fine, he seemed poised and purposeful before during and after each play, and so on. Pretty remarkable for a shot-in-the-dark, afterthought player.

3) The Zolak-plus-the-twins thing may have been the worst sports broadcast in history. Phil Perry did fine in his gig, but I miss Zo's lunacy, so put stuff back where it was. Sosci is terrific at what he does, but he's about as exciting as my dentist.

4) The O-line is waaay down on talent, but they did look well-coached, which was a nice surprise. We all knew (with the possible exception of our GM, or whatever he is, hiding there under the bleachers) that the O-line talent was bad, so that wasn't a surprise.

5) The game was a tough watch. Our new HC is clearly better than their new HC, if that isn't damning with faint praise, which just might be the right take.

To my eye, he looks a little p-----d. I think he should be. He should be out there learning. Not sitting on the bench in a cloud of bubble wrap, lest he get a booboo. Stupid. Coaching malpractice.

Also saw him slow down before going down. That’s a good way to get hit hard and probably fumble against a better defense than that.
good point. didn't think of that

Seems like he is considered a “starter”.
He blew by a DB in the first series but Brissett couldn't reach him with the pass. There's hope for the kid.

With what we've seen in previous years, I don't want to give up on a guy (Boutte) who seems to get some separation. That is a precious commodity.

OL was up and down…looked good in the second half. Still lots of work to do.
Imagine the opponent in the second half VS that team…..

He was the best WR for the Pats (not saying much) but you'll have to choke on that.

Sorry misunderstood your post.

Thornton IMO was our best receiver last night. Zo was right. He needs to learn to go after that ball so they have to call pass interference, but he was clearly open by a mile, was interfered, and Brisett messed up the play.

Thornton played only 7 snaps with the #1's and was taken out after creating more separation than any other player on one play. That speaks to what the coaches thought.

This is likely true, but I expect Zappe to get a stay of execution for longer than we hope.

Consider this scenario....

The Patriots stable pony starting QB goes down in the 1st quarter of week 1....then what?
Hand the keys over to Maye (or Milton) and say, 'even though we've slow-played your introduction into the NFL, and our OL will likely get you killed, and your footwork is Pop Warnerish....it's all yours now".

I'm thinking NE carries 4 QBs when the season starts simply because Zappe has 2+years of NFL experience vs 2 weeks
I think we all would rather watch an inexperienced Maye or Milton play rather than another ****ty Zappe experience. This is a "rebuilding" year. Zappe needs to go to the PS and Milton should have the QB3 slot. Not leaving him available for other teams to pick up.

Maye looked much better than Brissett. I have to assume that Mayo was showing off Zappe in the hopes of trading him. Ha. A ridiculous waste of playing time that could have been better used to exercise Maye.

I was quite disappointed too about the zappe show. I hope im wrong but nobody’s giving us anything for him, heck nobody wanted him for free last year so i don’t see the point. I get if they wanted to protect maye and brisset (hopefully its true that maye gets alot more work against the eagles, not too concerned there) but in that scenario milton should’ve played half 2 at the minimum. It truly seemed like a waste but hopefully we’re missing something.

Did not see Tyquan Thornton as much as I expected.
great route on the first or second series. He got off the ball and absolutely flew past the D but the ball was under thrown. A glimpse into what we have been wanting to see from him.

I enjoyed the game.

PLUS:

(1) Pre-snap penalties notwithstanding, the O-line looked as though it had been professionally coached.

(2) There must be 4 or 5 competent wide receivers somewhere in that group.

(3) Zappe is a decent NFL backup.

(4) The defense looked as if they could survive without Barmore and Judon (Jeremiah Pharms!)

(5) Milton is a lot of fun.

MINUS:

(1) Brissett still sucks. He's inaccurate, stares at his receivers and is slow in his release.

(2) The team is short two tackles.

(3) Running back after Stevenson is very thin.

(4) Tight end after Henry is thin.

Disappointed in the tackles. Hard to tell who or what the opposition was. The announcers (ha) were too busy amusing themselves to actually tell us who was in the game, who made a play. Not excited about Brissett. Couldn't get the ball to Thornton who could have had a TD in stride. Maye completed a screen and a checkdown, that's a good thing. I thought the ball he overthrew was a very good throw, good velocity, a tad high. Did not look out of place. Disappointed in Zappe. Milton, classic preseason sensation but has possibilities. Hard to get excited about the defense playing against Luton/Plummer. Don't think there were any problematic injuries.

1. Panthers are the worst team in the league.
2. The new system (Mayo) absolutely screwed up by only playing Brissett 3 plays, Maye 6... and Zappe for 100
3. A bit concerned with Mayo's learning curve - unprepared when CAR went for it on 4th (TO), and the dumb challenge on INT.
4. Weird to have Wilcox play TE like he's the next man up, and only see Bell in the 3rd qtr
5. I think we're going to be very good at RB (and we'll need to be)

I wasn’t that bothered by the challenge, we didn’t need it anymore so why not… the only real concern i had besides all the penalties was the lack of urgency to get the snap off after i think it was wilcoxs false catch to convert a 3rd down before halftime. Not sure if they would’ve done it differently if it was a real game but i sure hope so. Plus of course wasting reps on zappe and to your point im about done with wilcox, lets see more of bell !
