2022 PTP Draft Board / Pats Draft Talk

Just like my last post, rrun stuffer and inside blitzer is great but seems like at 21 we should get more than that. More than "he is weak in pass coverage but can grow into it". Mid 2nd seems OK, but I am still searching for that mid 1st, 3 down stud.
Where did I say we should be picking him at 21? All I said was that you would want him at OLB, you asked why, I responded with the reasons why I’d want him at OLB.

From what I've been seeing/hearing about the cb's it looks like the top 3 (Stingley, Gardner, McDuffie) will all be gone by 21. Possibly Booth as well. The question then becomes, with cb, being our greatest need, is there value with the 21st pick to select the next best cb (Elam, Gordan, McCreary) with that pick. The issue is there are cb needy teams at the end of the 1st round that will likely pick one. Or do we trade back, take an O-lineman or d-lineman?
During the dynasty CB have always been a luxury and not a Need pick there are many examples. That said this time around it's a Definite NEED we can't afford a swing and miss here. That said I think it's between LB and ie Nakobe Dean and a CB. Is LB Nakobe Dean more valuable than a CB at 21? most might say yes. Also this years CB position have decent depth but we would have get up in the 40's in a slight Trade-up from 54. IF it even costs us a Fourth to get in the Second tier of CB's I'm all for it. We have done well in the UDFA market but that's no guarantee.

McShay has us taking Nakobe Dean and Kaiir Elam in the 2nd. I'd take that draft. Maybe another top LB will even be available in the 3rd.

There are going to be plenty of good players available at 21. Looking at consensus boards, the most likely to go in the top 20 are:

DE: Hutchinson, Thibideoux, Walker, Johnson, Karlaftis
OT: Neal, Ekwonu, Cross, Penning
CB: Stingley, Gardner, McDuffie
WR: Wilson, London, Williams, Olave
DT: Davis
LB: Lloyd
S: Hamilton
QB: Willis or Pickett, maybe both.

We should therefore have the following to potentially pick from: Andrew Booth, Dax Hill, Kair Elam, Zion Johnson, Devonta Wyatt, Boye Mafe, Kyler Gordon, Nakobe Dean, Treylon Burks, Kenyon Green, Lindebaum. If two QBs go in the top 20 it will push another player down from that list.

So plenty of corner and trade down options, just don't expect a receiver. I'm personally fully on the Dax Hill train.

I don't think Elam makes it to the 2nd round. If he did, it would be a no brainer pick for us and this scenario would be ideal.

NO wanted to get in front of LA or they're making a push for a QB?

Howie finessed NO. 23 is a better QB class by miles and better overall. I wouldn't hate this for us if we didn't have more than a few holes.

Jordan Davis for saints. Why else will they leapfrog chargers?

If this is the situation that plays out, and it is feeling like the case, a trade back might be in order....I wouldn't go too far, but if we could get one of those players in the late 1st and get an extra pick, that would be a win-win.

There’s room on the Travis Jones bandwagon. All aboard.

Not at 21 but I think he’s a 3 down player worthy of a pick in the pats trade down range IMO.

Imagine coming away with Nakobe Dean and Travis Jones that would really fix our Front 7. Our CB's wouldn't have to be great with the help they would get upfront. Buffalo would punt more than a few times.

You think Davis makes it to 16? With his incredible combine, I think that's a big question now.
Just remember that Wilfork was being touted as Top 10 and fell all the way to 21... Strange things happen in the draft.. Especially with so many teams having traded out of the first round for one reason or another..

My Top 100 Big Board:

Good stuff, thanks. Some interesting things I noticed:

- you had Booth rated lower than most
- you had Daxton Hill higher than most
- Is David Ojabo ranked based strictly on his injury?
- Do you see a big difference between Phidarian Mathis and Travis Jones?

Thanks again for sharing!!!

Johnson is 254 lbs. Very light for the DL. Big enough for college but is it big enough for the NFL? How do you know he will translate to the NFL? I am sure Johnson will be good but a Top 20 pick should be "can't miss" in my book.

I see him as an edge player, not a true DL. He'd be more like Judon than Guy. He's definitely big enough. Great testing number. Could be a nice bookend with Judon if they go that direction.

6' 5"
254 lbs
34" arms

I'm all aboard the Travis Jones bandwagon that people are mentioning, too.

Agreed. I am reading there are a lot of DEs. I also believe that Flowers is on his way back.

Has there been any more development on this front since he was released? I haven't heard much beyond it being a scenario tossed around by reporters. I'd love for him to come back, so any confirmation of that is very welcome.

What was his time like in Detroit? Did he have success as a player that'd bump up his sticker price? Or is it similar to a Collins situation where he got major pay and is now more affordable due to being on a stinker of a team and not having the opportunity to look great? (I know the two aren't similar circumstances, but you get my point)

Flowers/Uche
round 1/2 pick
Barmore
Judon/Perkins

round 1/2 pick
Bentley/Mack/a SS

That’d be an exciting (& athletic) front seven.

I have not seen any rumors about Flowers coming back, but no-one has signed him either. I am not an expert, but there is some rule about signing players before the draft that count against the compensation pick formula, and I believe if a FA is signed after the draft, the salary is not used in the compensation pick formula. So I am guessing that some FA's agents have already negotiated deals to be consummated after the draft. I could be wrong, but I believe something like this is going on as a lot of quality FAs are still available. Whenever I hear "he is taking his time", "he is weighing all of his options", blah, blah, blah, that means there is something other than money involved.

Flowers did not live up to the hype in Detroit, and was injured a lot as well. He is like 270 lbs. so stouter than some of the others. If we had Flowers, Jermaine Johnson, and Travis Jones I think our D line problem is solved (I am trusting others more knowledgeable than me like @WaterfallJumper on Johnson). But I am on the record and still believe that the Pats will trade down for an extra pick or two, and select Dax Hill with their first selection, much like when they traded back from the 23rd selection and picked Dugger in 2020.
