2018 mocks

I hope 6 QBs go before 23, then at 23 AND 31 we get non-QBs who by rights should not have been there. Then we later take a chance at developing White or Lauletta.
What about the Marshall and Princeton Qbs.
Also im warming up to the idea of Allen from Houston thinking he has alot of natural talent played great when in the lineup has some of a Brady kind of feel to him.

Thanks.

Lauletta and Falk (and Josh Allen) were kinda what I was left with after using the #23 on Evans.

I didn't set out to take a TE at all, but Andrews was pretty much the BPA by the time I got to that pick.

Cantrell was one of a handful of names left on the board that I still recognized at that point.

On the "difficult" setting, it's truly amazing how quickly other even viable, much less preferred targets at all positions are whisked off the board after you make a pick, and it hits hard that every pick you make goes almost cruelly determines your next pick. You end up just taking what you can get.

Certainly a lot closer to "real life" than just picking favorites from someone's "top-100" list. Really, really glad I don't have to make those decisions in real life. You make what feels like a very good pick, but by the time your next pick rolls around, you're like, "OMFG! I've just totally effed-up the roster for the next two years!!"

As fun as these games are, let's remember that they're just games. I tried the difficult setting, and still ended up with an unrealistic and amazing haul. I couldn't complain in the least if our real draft ended up like this!

I wanted to go with Alex Cappa at 63 but with only Falk and Lauletta left at QB I was afraid I’d miss out on both in the next round. Turns out I was wrong and I was forced to settle for Jamarco Jones. Without a 4th/5th rounder I missed out on the TE I wanted, but I loved my last 3 picks.

Ideally I would like to see if we could trade the 31st pick for Chicago’s 39th and their 2 4ths (105&115) which I’d use to Fumagalli and Hercules.

I had no intention of going QB with the 1st pick, but I couldn't help it when Allen fell to me. I was certain I'd miss out on my favorite CB after passing on him at 43, but sure enough he fell. As did Kolton all the way to the end of round 3. I wanted to address DL, but couldn't justify passing on any of the last 3 guys. Besides my boy LOTULELEI went undrafted.

Using Dane Brugler’s 7 round mock from yesterday, here’s my latest.

23. Jaire Alexander, CB, Louisville

Has a lot of the traits B.B. likes from his cornerbacks, especially his athleticism. I don’t think CB is the biggest need but I do think this and next years draft should be about rebuilding the roster for the next generation. Alexander should be a serious consideration for CB2 or for the slot. I seee this as a BPA pick.

31. TRADE: Cleveland trade 35, 150, 175 And 188 for pick 31. Browns trade up ahead of Eagles for Derrius Guice.

35. Lorenzo Carter, LB, Georgia

Ours is a defense that desperately needs athleticism in the front 7 and Carter provides that. I can see him being used similarly to Jamie Collins and provides the additional benefit of being a LB of the edge on pass rush downs. That athleticism and versatility are why he’s my pick.

43. Justin Reid, S, Stanford

Adding Reid and Alexander to this defense really shores up the Long-term future of this secondary whilst adding quality pieces in the shot-term. Reid also adds the leadship element that B.B. appreciates so much.

63. Duke Ejiofor, DE, Wake Forest

Fits what the Pats look for in a DE - long arms, plays the run well, can move inside on pass rush downs, a disciplined skilled pass rusher. Pats pass rushers are rarely the super athletic speed rushers. It’s unlikely we’ll have anyone on the roster who would get more than 10 sacks individually but Carter, Rivers, Ejiofor, Flowers,Wise and Clayborn is certainly a deep roster of pass rushers.

95. DaeSean Hamilton, WR, Penn State

With Jordan Matthews on the roster, this is more a pick for the future but Hamilton could step straight into Matthews’ shoes at the end of this year whilst providing cover this year.

TRADE: Patriots trade 150 & 175 for pick 130

130. Luke Faulk, QB, Washington State

I like Lauletta, I really do but his lack of arm strength really does concern me in so far as becoming a future NFL starter is concerned. Faulk has some flaws, but I really do like his pocket presence and his purported intelligence. With a couple of years of development, I do see a future starter in him. But, the lack of draft capital spent here doesn’t preclude us from going QB next year or the year after either.

188. Tremon Smith, CB, Central Arkansas

A long very athletic corner with the ability to get his hands on the ball. Good job we’ve shown interest in him. Love the competitive secondary we’d have in camp.

198. Russell Gage, WR, LSU

I’ve mocked him simply because he’s a special teams demon. If he can be a future slot WR too, all well and good.

210. Julian Taylor, DL, Temple

Long (6’4”), strong (31 reps) and very athletic (33 vert, 4.83 forty at 294lbs). 3-tech developmental prospect.

219. Phillip Lindsay, RB, Colorado

Tiny but extremely physical and an excellent blocker and receiver. A Danny Woodhead clone. If this mock was how the draft goes, Lindsay may bee my favourite player of all - a fan favourite in the making.

So the obvious thing from this mock is no OT and TE. It’s a bad year to need an OT so the news about Garcia being back to full strength is hopeful. I’m OK to roll with Garcia and Waddle for a year rather than reaching for someone like Kolton Miller. As for TE, I’d love to have taken one but I loved the players I took at the different picks over the TE. Leave that position to be a priority next year.

Note: For trades I used Rich Hill’s draft trade chart which maps trades since 2012.

Dane Brugler had Julian Taylor as our 7th round pick. This short highlight film is why I included him too.

My favorite mock of the year.

My favorite mock of the year.

I really wanted to include Rashaan Evans but I just loved the value of Jaire Alexander too much. I think the mock sets us up really well for the future too and when you add in the fact that we have (for now) 5 top 100 pickS for next year (including comps), these two drafts could really tie up the next generation of Patriots.

And thank you.

Ps. Do you know anything about Julian Taylor? It was only a short highlight video but I thought it was really impressive. Excellent length, strength and athleticism. I just want to know how accurate it is.

My favorite mock of the year.
Alexander and Reid would be an excellent addition to our secondary. I am a bit surprised in many mock drafts safety position is disregarded. Based on "nickel formation" safety is a crucial part and element of it. So I strongly disagree with some experts saying safety is not an urgent need. Yes,it is.

Not to mention an upgrade to Richards is probably one of our biggest needs other than LB

His ability to play off blocks is impressive. While production is nice, I'm always looking for traits: balance through contact, the ability to redirect without wasted movement, attention to where the ball is going, good technique and pad level when engaged with a blocker, etc. I'm already working on his teammate Finch, so I'll watch the rest of the line more thoroughly. Nice find.

Here is my ideal mock for the Patriots if everything falls as well as it possibly can for them. I'll do 2 possibilities for the first pick.

#23 Jaire Alexander - CB, Vander Esch - LB - Who I'd want the most is Smith but I don't see any way he falls within range. Alexander is unlikely too but i see it as possible depending on how teams view other DBs. I think he is possibly the best CB in this draft and they need a long term option there. As for Vander Esch I think he has the size and skills BB tends to like in a LB in this D. My 3rd choice is Bryan - DT who i think is probably more likely to fall than these 2. Hurst would be my 4th option here btw.

#31 - TRADE - #47 and #79 - I don't see any likely value for us picking here. No players will fall that I see a point banging the table to get most likely unless it is either Evans/Esch (when we picked Alexander first). If a team wants to jump up here for a QB or some other prospect they love by all means let them.

#43 - Harrison Phillips - DT - This is one of those smaller pass rush DTs I try to pound the table for them to pick every year. The things that stick out about him are his had fighting. Often he gets double teamed on film and simply pushes one blocked to the ground. He doesn't always play under control which BB will hate I know but he is hungry for the ball carrier whoever it is.

#47 Darius Leonard - LB - If the Pats miss on LB in the first this guy is a good enough option. Not many LBs I like much after him to be honest.

#63 Mike Gesicki - TE - The only offensive pass catcher I want this draft. We will never find another Gronk and shouldn't try to. Instead get this guy who is really a Jimmy Graham clone.

#79 Kyle Lauletta - QB - The Pats were going to draft a QB at some point and this guys seems like a good a bet as any. My personal rule of thumb to find value on QBs is look for guys who are "undersize", "have a weak arm" or "lack mobility". They are things scouts care entirely too much about.

#95 Jaylen Samuels - RB - He is one of those guys i look at and just think "Patriot". He is cut from the same kind of cloth as Lewis/Burkhead/Faulk/White and many others we have had here. Also he returns kicks. Even though a small guy the thin that stuck out to me is how hard he fights for yards and how readily he accept contact. It fells like any play can be a big play when he's on the field. Also a fun fact. He hasn't fumbled since his freshman year. My biggest issue with him is he often leaves his feet to make catches when he doesn't have to.

#198 - This player will obviously be better than Tom Brady.
#210 - some other guy.
#219 - some other guy!

No LT chosen anywhere in either mock...Surely you two are not seriously depending on Waddle/Garcia to emerge as our starting LT, are you?

I can't speak for manx but I will say personally I don't believe a rookie will solve the problem. If a guy falls who makes sense then sure.

Do you think Kolton Miller will be better? Or Brian O’Neill? Neither are likely to be out of the box year one starters that improve on Waddle. I’m fine with seeing what Garcia has to offer. If they take someone like Miller or O’Neill as a long-term pick but I don’t see either as a short-term solution. Garcia was picked, presumably, as Solder insurance, why not give him that chance?

I'm fine with giving Garcia a chance. A 3rd rounder deserves that. However, what if he isn't able?
Then we are committed to starting our draftee next year, and drafting high enough to find the talent, or trade for it.

Taking McNeill or Miller is much less risky.

For me, the alternative is the possibility of Scar being comfortable with Cannon at LT, even for 2 years.
